According to my calculations, Blurred Lines will sell 188,627 copies this week. That's too incredible for words and is reminiscent of the high sales period of the late 90s and early 2000s!

I think Blurred Lines will continue selling pass 100k for the next 2 weeks, Week 2 probably around 140-145k+, Week 3 around 115-120k+ possibility another week on top of that, depends if the sales start dropping by a lot, unless something else comes out of the woodwork, or Icona Pop track drops early.

Personally I can't see Union J going straight in at #1 next week, but you can never tell what is going to happen week on week, something else might come out of the blue.

Where's exactly Still Into You please?
How are OMAM still ahead of Paramore???

Well they had 2 versions in the top 100 for quite a few days (second version is now #142) and their top version isn't exactly miles behind theirs. Plus their EP has been surprisingly picking up a few more sales. Paramore might overtake them by Sunday though.

Robin Thicke should do over 180k now for certain :D I have actually heard the song now and I really like it, especially the falsetto bits. It's no 'Get Lucky' in terms of recent Pharrell hits but definitely continuing a streak of strong #1s. Hopefully to be continued by Dizzee Rascal or John Newman rather than ruined by Icona Pop.

Pleasing to see Ellie still as high as #33, hopefully she should hang onto the top 40 now like Birdy and Evanescence did. Yay for Passenger and Rudimental in the top 5 albums and 'Halcyon' climbing to #9 also :D

What was the last song to sell over 200k in a week, X Factor winners excluded?

"Wherever You Are" by Military Wives Choir?

The Justice Collective's He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother was the last song to sell over 200k. ^_^

This years #1's have been so random and out of the blue.

PJ and Duncan getting #1 off the back of a TV performance, Daft Punk returning and slaying the charts worldwide with an OA/OS release, an unknown Robin Thicke about to sell 180K in one week, Justin Timberlake hitting #1 with his return even though 'Suit And Tie' went to #3, the Comic Relief single finally being #1 again after years of missing out, The Saturdays selling over 114k with their return when everyone had predicted a massive flop and Naughty Boy getting a big hit even though he's not a big name and his past stuff with Emeli Sande didn't do too well. Also the unknown Duke Dumont going to #1 and Rudimental getting another smash even with their last single underperforming.

Robin Thicke isn't THAT unknown. He's had a lot of popular songs that have come out over the last few years, it's just that they just haven't made the UK chart.

^ Um, I wouldn't say Robin Thicke was unknown lol. But yeah, we've had some strange hits this year for sure. The main ones which I could've predicted a while ago were mainly Thrift Shop and Let Her Go, but never would've guessed people like Daft Punk, Naughty Boy and Robin Thicke would have such huge hits this year. Even Justin Timberlake, someone suggested on here last year that he might release an album, and I said at the time that he would probably flop since he doesn't do the kind of music that's popular (although 2013 was a perfect year for him to time his comeback in that respect tbh). So he's taken me by surprise too.
As for Naughty Boy and his previous work with Emeli Sande not doing too well, he did write and produce most of "Our Version Of Events" which has done rather well....

Really? I thought it was blatantly obvious Justin Timberlake would have a big comeback, although maybe not that he'd have a hit as big as 'Mirrors'. Similarly with Daft Punk, I would have predicted them to be big but maybe not THIS big. They've both been gone from the music scene for years and have massive followings on the Internet.

Robin Thicke definitely was a bit of an unexpected one to come out of the wilderness with an enormous seller though :P Especially as T.I. has become pretty hated in the UK since his imprisonment.

Yeah, Emeli Sande's material was a massive flop.

I think what Eric was saying was that Naughty Boy's previous credited chart appearances with Emeli (i.e. not just as a producer) have kind of underperformed ('Never Be Your Woman' #8, 'Daddy' #21, 'Wonder' #10) so you'd expect a song of his *without* her to do even worse, yet it's done far better.
'Blurred Lines' keeps exceeding my expectations; looks almost certain to sell 180k and perhaps even pass 190k! Really is a reflection of 2000 in terms of first week sales.

So what was the last non-XF and non-charity single to sell over 200k, then?

Cheryl Cole's Fight For This Love, with 292k.

And Bray, I think you're talking about shadow2009 and not Eric. :kink:

'Fight For This Love' I think, although Cheryl was a reality TV star - whether you count that or not, up to you - so I think the one before that must have been 'Can't Get You Out of My Head'.

I dunno. I think I thought that because some huge pop stars from a few years ago (e.g. Christina Aguilera, Ciara, Nelly Furtado, etc.) that I could never imagine struggling have done so recently, and I thought Justin Timberlake would be the same, but I suppose he kept himself in the spotlight with his movie career, and came back at a better time.

That was 12 years ago, and to think that Blurred Lines will come second to that in terms of impact on its own merits is actually quite extraordinary and too stunning to comprehend.
