Now 42 is probably the weakest Now album ever for hits but I still think it's amazing.

I see there's a Now 4 CD on Amazon, from a marketplace seller, for £899.99! They don't go for so much on Ebay, about £500 I think for a mint condition. One used and with a few scratches went for £350.

Cher's 'Believe' being the major exception, although really that should have been on Now 41

Two of the really major hits that should have been on Now 42 (Baby One More Time and Tragedy) were held back for Now 44, similarly Shania Twain's 'That Don't Impress Me Much' missing Now 43. Given how big all three of those were, I think they held them back so Now 44 could have most of the biggest hits of the year on and be used for millennium parties. Whatever the reason it worked as it sold over 2 million!

I've just finished doing Disc 1 on Now 42 on the blog, actually. I do think it's interesting because there are some relatively small hits on it, and a lot of songs that were big at the time but almost instantly forgotten.

I can sort of see what you mean about Now 44 actually, although it's possible that Britney was kept back for contractual reasons - the label might have been happier to licence it once the single had had its time.

Good programme, interesting where the inspiration for the series name came from!

When I worked at hospital radio they had all the Nows from 17 onwards on CD, perfect for requests of ANY age group!

I wish they would update the NOW index at Moopy though, still only goes up to 71. :(

EVER?

There's worse.

I love Now 42 purely for having Tender by Blur on it :D
At the risk of self-spoilers, Now 42 does have three tracks that missed the Top 30 (one of them twice!) and another one that charted long before the era it covers.
I think it was. How many #1s did Now 42 have?

9, including the one from 1966 :o

I think there were stronger sales across the spring and summer of 1999 than the beginning of 1999. Gezza could probably prove this!

Now 61 is probably my favourite Now album purely because it always reminds me of my travelling holiday through France. Specifically Disc 2 and all its cheesy pop/R'n'B, we were a bit averted to the 'indie' Disc 1. Of course that's all changed now, but it does remind me of a time when I just didn't care.

I went on a holiday to France in that year as well! :o I remember it so clearly, it was definitely an album with a musical progression running through it! :D

NOW 11 is perfection

Exactly. Now 35 is my least favourite Now CD. Apart from Faithless' Insolmia, there's nothing on either sides I like.

I do quite like 35 actually, although that's partly because it's the only one to feature Shed Seven (which may affect how seriously you take that opinion). I was very pleased the day I found that one and 42 in the same charity shop.

BBE's "Seven Days And One Week" and Underworld's "Pearl's Girl" are just as great as "Insomnia", imo! :D

Now 43 wasn't a whole lot better - if at all.

Now 43 is one of my all time favourites, and one of the only ones that I keep in full on my iPod: I Want It That Way, Sweet Like Chocolate, Bring It All Back, Boom Boom Boom Boom, 9PM (Till I Come), Red Alert, Say It Again, Love Of A Lifetime, Private Number, Greatest Day, Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen), You Get What You Give, Hey Boy Hey Girl, Right Here Right Now, Saltwater, Coffee & TV, Pick A Part That's New, Synth & Strings, To Be In Love and (especially) Better Off Alone are all great to me. That's basically a 50% strike rate of the entire compilation that I love!
