Posted June 14, 201312 yr I don't think that there's been a thread on this before and there was talk of it in the iTunes thread so I thought I'd start one. Here's a few that come to mind straight away: Skinny Love - Bon Iver / Birdy This Woman's Work - Kate Bush / Maxwell You've Got The Love - The Source feat. Candi Station / Florence + the Machine Make You Feel My Love - Bob Dylan / Adele Your Song - Elton John / Ellie Goulding Your Song and This Woman's Work are arguable but I'd say the other 3 are definite.
June 14, 201312 yr I don't think you can make much an argument for Maxwell TBH. And not for Ellie, really outside a very young demographic. And even the Source version of 'You've Got The Love' isn't technically the original. What about these ones though? Shout - Lulu/Isley Brothers Twist & Shout - Beatles/Isley Brothers/Topnotes Dancing In The Moonlight - Toploader/King Harvest There must be people who don't even know those ones are covers.
June 14, 201312 yr Author The only reason I mentioned Maxwell was because of its use on talent shows where it's been called a Maxwell song as a pose to a Kate Bush one.

I think "You Got The Love" and "Your Song" are also seriously arguable but it depends on age really. "You Got The Love" was a top 10 hit in both 1991 and 1997 so for us oldies we'll always remember it as a 90s hit, and Elton still gets probably more airplay than Ellie for "Your Song". I think the Adele one is safe though :D
June 14, 201312 yr Johnny Cash's version of Hurt by Nine Inch Nails has become immortalized. I'm sure if you asked someone on the street, they'd assume he sung it originally. Mad World as well, although the Tears For Fears version is still fairly well remembered.
June 14, 201312 yr Biggest one I can think of is 'Tragedy'. The Bee Gees version was popular but the Steps cover was so massive I've barely even heard the original played since it was released, to the point where it's a rare case a band's signature song being one not even intended for them in the first place. Indeed I don't think it was even the lead track of the double-A side, just a fun cover version added on to boost a few sales of the fourth single release from the album...
June 14, 201312 yr 'I Will Always Love You'. It probably still shocks people to this day that it's originally a Dolly Parton song, instead of being Whitney Houston's own.
June 14, 201312 yr If we're talking JUST the UK... "Always On My Mind" - Pet Shop Boys / Elvis Presley
June 14, 201312 yr Whitney Houston - I Will Always Love You/The Greatest Love Of All Mariah Carey - Without You Leona Lewis - Run Celine Dion - All By Myself/The Power Of Love* *In the US.
June 14, 201312 yr Torn by Natalie Imbruglia. Most people are shocked that it's actually a cover, of Ednaswap.

Not sure if the asterix applies to 'All By Myself' as well, but if it does, I'd say 'All By Myself' was quite well-known because of Celine Dion. I think the original is by a male and I can hear it in my head, but I haven't a clue what he is called. Torn by Natalie Imbruglia. Most people are shocked that it's actually a cover, of Ednaswap. Wow, that's news to me! :o

And, thankfully, that is the version my 13-year-old nephew knows and loves.
June 14, 201312 yr "Respect" - Aretha Franklin / Otis Redding "Here's Where The Story Ends" - Tin Tin Out :( / The Sundays "(I Didn't Know I Was) Looking For Love" - Karen Ramirez / Everything But The Girl
June 14, 201312 yr Various Blondie songs (Denis, Hanging On The Telephone and The Tide Is High) are all covers. Them there's Tainted Love (originally by Gloria Jones but better known as a Soft Cell song).
June 14, 201312 yr Various Blondie songs (Denis, Hanging On The Telephone and The Tide Is High) are all covers. I didn't know any of those were covers! :o Although it seems 'Denis' and 'Hanging On the Telephone' are still regarded as Blondie songs, bit complex to explain but you'll understand if you read their respective 100% reliable Wikipedia pages... ;)
June 14, 201312 yr I knew the Natalie Imbruglia / EDNASWAP one - the original is a very grunge-type single typical of the mid-90s.
