Single & Album Summary

Will Avicii get a 4th week at #1 after a broken spell at #2 last week, or will Ellie Goulding get her first #1 single with "Burn" her material just gets stronger on every release. And a quick newsflash Lady Gaga is going to drop her new single "Applause" any day soon, could be Tuesday or later in the week, will the track do the impossible and deny Ellie Goulding her first #1 single. Other single releases this week from the Wanted, Arctic Monkeys 'Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High?", Ray Foxx/Rachel K Collier and The Vaccines. With Drake/Majid Jordan and One Republic climbing further up the chart.

The only album release this week that could topple Richard & Adam comes from White Lies, other new album releases from Glen Campbell and... remains to be seen.

Midweek Charts: Goulding burns brightly on midweeks

Source: MW

by Paul Willams

Ellie Goulding could be heading for her first UK No 1 single with Burn outselling its two closest rivals combined.

The newly-issued Polydor track had shifted around 63,000 copies by the end of business on Tuesday, according to the Official Charts Company, giving it a lead of about 30,000 units over nearest challenger Wake Me Up by Positiva/PRMD's Avicii who holds at 2. RCA act Miley Cyrus is down to 3 in the midweeks having debuted at No 1 last Sunday with We Can't Stop.

Goulding's current UK chart peak is 2, achieved by her cover of the Elton John hit Your Song in 2010, while Burn is also on course to become the latest No 1 for Ryan Tedder and Greg Kurstin who produced and co-wrote the track. Tedder was the co-writer of Leona Lewis's 2007 chart-topper Bleeding Love, while Kurstin's credits includes Lilly Allen's UK No 1 single The Fear.

Burn's retail debut comes in a busy week for the singles market with new releases also out from Arctic Monkeys, Lady Gaga and The Wanted. In the case of Arctic Monkeys, it is likely to deliver the Domino signings their first Top 10 single in six years with Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High new at 5 in the midweeks. They last made the Top 10 in 2007 with Fluorescent Adolescent.

The Wanted are also set to return to the Top 10 with the Global Talent/Island-issued We Own The Night at No 6 in the week so far, while Lady Gaga's rush-released Interscope/Polydor cut Applause is new at 11, but is likely to finish much higher once the week's final chart is published on Sunday. A first taster of her third studio album Artpop, it has arrived at retail earlier than planned after being subject to a leak.

Holding at 4 in the midweeks is the Polydor single Summertime Sadness by Lana Del Rey Vs Cedric Gervais, while Tinie Tempah's Parlophone track Trampoline featuring 2 Chainz drops 3-7 and Interscope/Polydor act Robin Thicke's Blurred Lines featuring TI and Pharrell Williams falls 5-8. Island act John Newman is also down, slipping 6-9 with Love Me Again, and there is also a three-place drop to 10 for Jay-Z's Roc Nation/Virgin EMI single Holy Grail with Justin Timberlake.

Island/Strictly Rhythm's Ray Foxx with Boom Boom (Heartbeat) featuring Rachel K Collier is new at 13 at this stage of the week, while Columbia band The Vaccines are new at 34 with Melody Calling.

In a very quiet week on albums Britain's Got Talent finalists Richard & Adam could spend a third week at No 1 with their Sony title The Impossible Dream, even though it has sold fewer than 10,000 copies in the week so far. Behind it at 2 with fewer than 5,000 copies sold is Fiction act White Lies' newy-issued third album Big TV, while Asylum/Atlantic act Rudimental's former No 1 Home races back up 7-3 with sales increasing 71%.

Week-on-week sales of Interscope/Polydor act Imagine Dragons' Night Visions are virtually static as it eases 3-4 in the midweeks, while Nettwerk act Passenger's All The Little Lights is down 4-5 and Parlophone act David Guetta's Nothing But The Beat climbs 9-6. Michael Buble's Reprise/Warner Bros set To Be Loved loses a place to 7 and The Civil Wars' self-titled second Columbia album is down to 8 having debuted at 2 last Sunday.

Jay-Z's Roc Nation/Virgin EMI set Magna Carta Holy Grail drops 8-9 and Gentlemen Of The Road/Island act Mumford & Sons are looking to return to the Top 10 again with Babel, which climbs 13-10 in the midweeks. It is currently just ahead in sales of Rod Stewart's Capitol/Decca album Time, which could drop out of the Top 10 for the first time after a 13-week run.

Outside the Top 10, the only brand new album among the Top 40 sellers is See You There, a new set from veteran country star Glen Campbell and released on the Surfdog label.

Midweek Charts update: Gaga's rush-released Applause going top five

Source: MW

by Paul Willams

Lady Gaga's Applause is heading for a top five UK debut on Sunday after online leaks forced it to come out early.

The Interscope/Polydor single was commercially released at the beginning of this week, a week earlier than intended following a series of internet leaks, and is now showing as a new entry at No 5 on the midweeks, according to the Official Charts Company.

However, the track's sales in the week so far are less than one-third of those of Polydor act Ellie Goulding's Burn, which is set to debut at No 1 this weekend, giving Goulding a first singles chart-topper.

In a busy week for big new singles releases, Burn and Applause, a teaser from Gaga's forthcoming third studio abum Artpop, is joined in the midweek Top 10 by brand new entries from Domino's Arctic Monkeys and Global Talent/Island's The Wanted. Arctic Monkeys' Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High is at 6 and The Wanted's We Own The Night at 7, while above them Avicii's Positiva/PRMD-issued Wake Me Up holds at 2, RCA act Miley Cyrus's We Can't Stop falls 1-3 and the Polydor single Summertime Madness by Lana Del Rey Vs Cedric Gervais holds at 4.

Britain's Got Talent finalists Richard & Adam are likely to continue to lead the artist albums market with their Sony debut The Impossible Dream in what is a very quiet time in the market, while Rudimental's Asylum/Atlantic title Home races 7-2 with sales up 90% on the week. White Lies' third Fiction album Big TV is showing up as a new entry at 3, while Imagine Dragons' Interscope/Polydor-issued NIght Visions drops 3-4 and Nettwerk act Passenger's All The Little Lights is down 4-5.

Rod Stewart is facing a close battle with Calvin Harris to retain his Capitol/Decca album Time's Top 10 status. Time spent its first 13 weeks locked inside the Top 10 and now holds at 10 in the midweeks, but with a lead over Harris's Columbia album 18 Months at 11 of fewer than 200 sales

NO SALES INFO

I feel sorry for Ellie Goulding, looked set for a number one, but whoever leaked that GaGa song has put a spanner in the works

Well if it is out it's not even top 1500 yet.

Lady Gaga will probably release on Wednesday or Friday I don't think she will get number one this week especially as there's still no specific date for the release which will only encourage the hardcore fan base

I just hope Ellie will have a big enough lead to remain at number one this week, its about time she got her first chart topper!

It would be amazing to see Arctic Monkeys beating The Wanted to go top 5 and can't believe how quickly Ray Foxx shot up the chart, I'm hoping that can go top 15 so quite a few new entries this week to clear out the chart!

Albums will be pretty dead, I don't think White Lies will do it think they'll be lucky to go top 10 maybe #9 or 10?! Sales will be dire, just hoping they don't fall below 15k

Yep... pretty much as I just said over in the iTunes thread topic, Ellie has radio support and video airplay on rotation, I think Ellie will just hold on, unless Lady Gaga smashes.

So the GaGa song isn't out yet?

It's due at any point today in the UK - it's just been added to iTunes in Australia and UK/Europe will follow.

This new gaga track is dreadful so I don't think it stands any chance of going all the way to number 1.

It will probably peak at #5 or so.

Yes, but you said that about all of the singles she released so...

(I do agree it's so far from her best though)

Yes, but you said that about all of the singles she released so...

No, I didn't.

As far as I can remember though, none of her singles from the last album topped the chart so...

Just because *you* don't like it, that doesn't mean it doesn't stand a chance of #1...

Whatever happens, it's gonna be a tight one.

I think Ellie will just clinch it though, and I really hope so, she deserves a #1.

Just because *you* don't like it, that doesn't mean it doesn't stand a chance of #1...

Right, it doesn't but *I think* it will not top the chart and aren't we here to predict?

Ellie for number 1, the song is fab! She deserves to go to the top spot.

Gagas new song is very poor! Yet again all the hype (like BTW) and we get this, a generic unorginal mash up of noise!

So while the singles chart hots up we are also on course for the weakest album sales of the year - Will be surprised if the #1 album passes 15-16k this week.
It's the reason why I'm hoping Imagine Dragons can claim the number 1 spot on the albums chart.
Right, it doesn't but *I think* it will not top the chart and aren't we here to predict?

Predict all you want but your reason for predicting it was pretty baseless.
