It’s another pretty uninspiring week for the R1 playlist. A lot of decent tracks have been removed this week: Lana vs. Cedric, Le Youth, Ray Foxx, and Rudimental, which in the cases of ‘C O O L’ and ‘Boom Boom (Heartbeat)’ is far too soon. Particularly galling, considering the weak humdrum nature regarding most of the weeks additions. Good to see Mausi making the INMWT list though.
I really thought they'd playlist MKS. Surprised to see Example stall on the C-list, especially since it was Greg James' record of the week. Gaga will be A-listed next week for sure.
Did R1 playlist 'Power Trip'? Haven't heard this new J. Cole song but based on how well it did on cherrypicks it could be a top 40 hit for him especially now it has R1 support.
They did! It was B List when he performed at Big Weekend.

Ah, I should have known that as it probably wouldn't have charted at all without R1 support :P

10 new entries isn't uninspiring, no matter what you think of them.

Yay for The 1975!! LOVING that song right now.

Honestly, I love some of Example's stuff, and I've even seen him live, but this new one is just dire and doesn't deserve to be playlisted at all. I think he's lost his moment, and I can only think the record company agrees as they've let him release this.

I can't disagree with you more, this is the first thing I've liked since 'Changed The Way You Kiss Me' (or 'Natural Disaster'). Everything since then has been really, really bad. This is a return to form.

I'm on the fence, it's certainly not the best thing he's done (cos that's easily Changed The Way You Kiss Me) but it's also far from the worst...

Playlist additions 20 years ago, week commencing 23/08/93:

A-List:

Terence Trent D'Arby - She Kissed Me

Culture Beat - Mr. Vain

The Pogues - Tuesday Morning

Mariah Carey - Dreamlover

Tasmin Archer - Arienne

B-List:

Sybil - Stronger Together

Pet Shop Boys - Go West

Kate Bush - Rubberband Girl

Snow - Uhhh In You

Cole - Dreamer

Sting - Shape Of My Heart

C-List:

James - Sometimes

Sinclair - Ain't No Casanova

Meatloaf - Good Girls Go To Heaven

Levellers - 100 Years Of Solitude

What a great list of songs! Used to love She Kissed Me and of course Mr Vain! As if they playlisted Go West :o

Didn't even know Meatloaf's Good Girls Go To Heaven was a single

So is that just new additions to the playlist? Surely they can't have added 5 songs straight to the A-list? Or did they used to do that back in the day?

Songs automatically added to the A-List was pretty common until 2000, and post 2000 that only happened for highly anticipated singles (see Coldplay, Madonna, Kylie Minogue...). To this day, Radio 2 still does the automatic addition format the way Radio 1 did in the '90s.

CHVRCHES, Jason & Mumford's <3

'Hopeless Wanderer''s video is brilliant! Jason Sudeikis & Jason Bateman are two of my most favourite people in the world right now

They SHOULD do it again now with ON/OS releases, AM new one the prime example its fallen to 23 on itunes when it should have been alisted straight away(big act plus released straight away) look what happened to DIWK fell first week a bit then steadied out for 6-8 weeks as airplay increased!!

If radio followed through and supported OA/OS it would give more record labels confidence in it....they have to work in tandem!
