The biggest selling X Factor singles and albums acts revealed!

22/08/2013

By Daniel Lane

X Factor acts have clocked up nearly 50 million UK record sales over the last decade as Simon Cowell's reality TV singing contest gears up for its tenth series.

According to new Official Charts Company sales data published in today’s edition of Music Week, it has been revealed that X Factor has been responsible for nearly 50 million UK record sales over the last decade.

Acts who have appeared on Simon Cowell’s hit reality TV show, which is set to return for a tenth series next Saturday night (August 31), have clocked up 29.6 million UK singles sales and 18.3 million UK albums sales to date.

Leona Lewis, who won the third series in 2006, remains the biggest selling artist to emerge from X Factor with 4.4 million singles sales and 3.9 million albums sales to her name.

Surprisingly, after bringing London’s Leicester Square to a standstill when they premiered their new film, This Is Us, on Tuesday night (August 20), 2010 runners up One Direction lag behind the likes of Olly Murs and JLS in UK singles and albums sales.

Olly Murs (who came second in 2009) and 2008 runners-up JLS are the second and third biggest singles acts with 3.9 million and 3.4 million singles sales, respectively. Their positions are reversed in the biggest selling X Factor albums acts Top 10, with JLS on 2.7 million album sales and Olly on 2.6 million album sales.

Meanwhile, One Direction are both the fourth biggest selling X Factor singles act (3.2 million sales) and albums act (1.7 million). Alexandra Burke is the fifth biggest selling X Factor singles act over-all. However, with more than 1.25 million sales, her 2008 winner’s single, Hallelujah, is the show’s biggest selling single to date. 2004 runners up, G4, are X Factor’s fifth biggest selling albums act. The vocal troupe clocked up more than 1.2 million sales across their three studio albums.

Simon Cowell's still the daddy!

When father-to-be Simon Cowell was asked by news agency Reuters if he’d be happy to let his unborn child become a pop star, the music mogul quipped: "If they were signed to me, yes, because I'd look after them."

This could indeed be a shrewd move for Baby Cowell; despite Simon quitting the show in 2010 to launch a US version X Factor, he remains is the programme’s most commercially successful judge. Simon Cowell-mentored acts Leona Lewis, Olly Murs and One Direction, alone account for more than 43% of all X Factor single and album sales to date!

Yeah right - knowing the contracts he makes XF contestants sign, he'd probably bill the kid for changing its nappies...

The best singer is the most commercial too. Nobody can reach her..:)
Didn't 1D come 3rd?

Olly Murs came 2nd.

YAY WE'RE PLAYING A LET'S REMEMBER WHO FINISHED WHERE IN THEIR RESPECTIVE SERIES GAME

Surprised One Direction are already so close to JLS in the singles! :o

Olly Murs might overtake Leona if he gets 1 or 2 more hit singles.

Yay Leona! :cheer:

I hope she can extend her lead in the albums chart with the release of her Christmas Album. I think Olly will overtake her in the singles section soon though, unless her next lead single sells decently.

Matt Cardle will move up to 6th in the Singles when Loving You becomes a million seller later this year :P

X Factor acts domestically sold 30 million singles and 18 million albums

By Paul Willams

Music Week

The X Factor launches its 10th UK series next weekend as Music Week reveals its acts have domestically sold a staggering 30 million singles and 18 million albums.

The huge totals mean that since the programme first aired in 2004, combined X Factor discoveries have sold more records in the UK than any corporate record group outside the majors, based on Official Charts Company data.

Our exclusive analysis shows acts uncovered during the first nine series have sold around 29.6 million singles in the UK - equivalent to 2.7% of singles sales since first winner Steve Brookstein’s debut hit was issued. They have also shifted 18.3 million albums; a 2.2% share of the artist LP market between the release of Brookstein’s introductory album and now.

In both sectors the X Factor tables are headed by Leona Lewis, whose three Syco albums have to date sold an unrivalled 3.9 million copies in the UK, while she has shifted 4.4 million singles. Olly Murs is Lewis’s closest challenger on singles and JLS on albums.

Murs has accounted for 3.9 million UK singles sales, while he is narrowly behind JLS on albums with his three Epic studio efforts attracting 2.6 million buyers. His current album Right Place Right Time alone was up to 814,686 sales by last weekend having returned to the weekly Top 20, narrowing the gap on soon-to-split JLS who have sold 2.7 million albums in total across their Epic and RCA releases.

In all, nine X Factor acts have shifted more than a million singles in the UK. Six artists have sold at least a million albums, including One Direction whose first two Syco albums have combined shifted 1.7 million copies so far. A third album is due from them in Q4.

The numbers would look even more impressive with the addition of overseas sales by the brand’s UK contestants, led by One Direction whose two albums were the third and fourth biggest sellers globally of 2012, according to IFPI data. There have also been notable international sales for Lewis and more recently acts including Murs, Little Mix and Cher Lloyd.

As the home of show founder Simon Cowell’s label Syco, Sony has been by far its biggest beneficiary with X Factor releases accounting for around 12.9% of the major’s UK singles sales and 10.3% of its artist albums business over the given periods.

The 10th X Factor series starts on ITV next Saturday (August 31) and for the first time will include shows on Saturday and Sunday nights right from the start. Sharon Osbourne returns as a judge after a six-year gap, joining Gary Barlow, Nicole Scherzinger and Louis Walsh.
