Not too rusty a performance, as 'Surph' bags Persephonia's eighth top 15 finish

 

Closing off our most successful year in the contest to date which saw us come 18th in the year end rankings, aided by 2 massive top 3 finishes, Persephonia's representative in BJSC LX in Trifoski, 'Surph' by Rustie featuring Nightwave, came 14th with 84 points.

 

It's the tied 5th best result for the country and our 8th top 15 finish in total (though only 3 of those were higher than #13). It also means that 2013 both started and ended with Persephonia in fourteenth place, following Roses Gabor's similar finish in BJSC LI. Points wise it was not as successful as 'Stars'. It's only the 9th highest points tally we have received.

'Surph' was voted for by 18 of the 47 other voting countries, including one 12 (from Trifoski), one 10 (from Kluminican Republic) and one 8 (from Elëdan). It marginally outperformed its projected finish, having scored the 15th highest total across both semi-finals; 8th place in semi-final 2 with 76 points received.

 

Persephonian televote and final results commentary

 

Elëdan scored their 4th win in BJSC LX with their entry 'Meet Me In A House Of Love' by Cut Copy, a remarkable 55 contests after they first won in the early days of the contest with t.A.T.u.'s 'Gomenasai' and their first win since 'Hyperventilating' by Ronya topped BJSC XLIV. They become only the 4th country to win the contest 4 or more times, after FSR Rointvia (7), Mdiče (6) and Aeroche (also 4). 'Meet Me In A House Of Love' scored 192 points, a comfortable lead.

 

N DNTN had to settle for yet another 2nd place - their third in 2013 and overall without a win to their name yet - with Gesaffelstein's 'Hate Or Glory' taking silver with 166 points (nonetheless an N DNTN points record). FSR Rontvia had only their second top 3 hit of the year, with RL Grime's 'Because Of U' coming 3rd with 150 points to end a disappointing year for them on a high note. Scoring a 3rd top 5 hit in a row, Aeroche came 4th with Aphex Twin's classic 'Windowlicker' and Sandénia made the top 5 for the first time, coming 5th with Tanika's 'Bad 4 U'.

 

As well as that, another country score their first top 10 hit - Varakë, who came 7th with Pyramid's 'Wolf'. Kluminican Republic have had 2 previous top ten hits but Wave Racer's 'Rock U Tonite' (6th) is their first since Aura Dione's 'Geronimo' way back in BJSC XXXIX. 'Rock U Tonite' has been controversial in Persephonia with many viewers complaining to Persepcom that it plagiarised our own entry 'Surph'. Their complaints were not upheld. Botanikka have also been absent from the top 10 since BJSC XLVI but finish 8th with BROODS' 'Bridges'. Ojnoj (9th with 'As We Collide' by Christian Burns, Oakenfold and Jes) and Séyetana (10th on a tiebreak with Ecstasy's 'Exhale') completed the top 10.

 

Losing the aforementioned tiebreak for 10th and having to settle for 11th was Hendinia's entry, 'The New Kings' by Vicetone vs. Popeska feat. Luciana. Other results from Union of Jubirdia nations: Ramrynia came 12th with Chelsea Lankes' 'Ghost'; 'Talk About It' by Topher Jones feat. Katie Sky came 16th for Bellamia; Skall's entry 'Lost It To Trying' by Son Lux finished 19th; Daehun were 22nd with 'La La La' by Namie Amuro; 2 Jubirdian nations autoqualified and both performed poorly, with hosts Trifoski coming 26th with Cashmere Cat's 'Mirror Maru' and D'yermak'er falling short of their hype to come one off last (31st) with 'Medusa' by GEMS.

 

Greenfroze and Tinnmark have both had unsuccessful years but end the year both in the final for the first time since BJSC XLVII. Neither exactly smashed but the former were more successful, coming 28th with Kassia's 'In My World', one place ahead of Tinnmark's entry 'Gå För Långt' by Alina Devecerski. Tartford first entered BJSC in its tenth edition, only entering twice before taking a long hiatus and returning in BJSC LIX. One contest later they make the final for the first time with Sky Ferreira's 'Dynamite State' coming 30th. Taking this month's wooden spoon, 32nd out of 32, was Zechonia with The Gathering's 'Echoes Keep Growing' - not a surprising last placer, the track was popular with Persephonian voters but has a much heavier sound than your average BJSC hit. Only six countries voted for the track and it was 17 points adrift of D'yermak'er one place ahead.

'A Year of Highs and Tiches - The Best of BJSC 2013 According to the Gospel of Spark Records, Carellis' hits shops across the BJSC world

 

In a move that, as always from Spark Records (Persephonia's biggest music label), is not in any way copying other countries, a selection of cuts from 2013's BuzzJack Song Contests is due to go on sale very shortly.

 

The album is billed as the most comprehensive compilation put out yet, comprising an enormous 150 tracks across five discs and covering a wide range of countries and genres (many of those being token inclusions for the sake of diversity but that's besides the point). 135 songs were decided by the Persephonian public voting for their favourites of the year and there were 15 'wildcard' inclusions of songs that don't rank as highly with Persephonians, but were deemed in some way significant to the year. To preserve the mystery, the identity of these 15 songs will be kept a secret.

 

(editor's note: though I have heard a rumour that the spurious inclusion of 'Mozart's Sister' is just a reminder to you all that Persephonia's advice is gospel - we warned N DNTN not to send it and look what happened when they did!)

 

Abridged versions of lengthy tracks by Ten Walls and Max Bruch are included due to bowing to pressure of international distributers which refused to carry long songs. The full versions of both are available as bonus tracks on the Persephonian release of the album, as well as other exclusive remixes including the deep house remix of Shadeux's 'Roo'. A super special hyper mega deluxe 5CD+DVD edition of the album also features a DVD comprising nothing but a 24-hour loop of the video to 'Skeletons Having Sex On a Tin Roof' by Orphic Oxtra.
