People even had the temerity to nominate 'Bear Hug' for 'worst entry of the year' back when the BJSC Awards were still a thing. Well, its impact has outlasted that B-)

i'm surprised people thought 'bear hug' was terrible, i LOVED it at the time and i seemed to ahve the impression a lot of ppl did haha, i could see a lot of things that u entered i would've wanted to enter if i'd joined at the time

Surprise top 10 for The Shanghai Restoration Project!

About 84 years ago (i.e. on Wednesday night), Kluminican Republic concluded their hosting of BJSC LXXXI and in a spectacular blaze of unpredictableness ~ Persephonia achieved another top 10 placing with The Shanghai Restoration Project's 'The Wandering Songstress' (feat. Zhang Le) finishing 6th with 253 points (and it would have been 5th if it weren't for those meddling clerical errors!!1 but let us not dwell on that). That puts us right back on track after our DNQ in the last contest, and is our third qualifier in a row to make the top 10. Sadly it's still not another unique position though as we remain unable to finish between 7th and 12th. Lol. It's our 11th top 10 hit in all and only the second of those (after Spark's 'Revolving' which also came 6th) to not be top 5. Officially. x

PNB always play up the 'no one expected it to do well!!1' plotline with our hits but I think we have even more of a case than usual to make with this one which received multiple DNQ predictions and came 4th from last (!) in Aerochian bookmakers' opening odds. Then not a single person predicted it to be top 10 in the predicta. So... hooray, surprise hit! :cheer: And a hit we are especially pleased with after taking the risk of confirming a song without getting anyone else's opinion on it first for once. We had expected it to outperform its semi-final position if it did qualify as semi-final 2 seemed much more favorable to it and indeed it did significantly beat its projected finish of 20th, however it was not near in danger of DNQing as it came 8th in semi-final 1 with 68 points.

Thank you to the 26 countries who voted for 'The Wandering Songstress', with particular shoutouts as usual to those who placed it in their top 3 - Fljótavík (who we traded 12s with in the semi-final :'() awarded the track a full 18, Land of DW, Quintessa, Séyetana and Trifoski gave it 15 and Daehun and St. Burbia gave it 13. You're all fab. ^_^

Final results commentary + Persephonia's full rankings

A new country joined the winners list this time, and it was a very long time coming. Deandria first entered the contest in its 11th edition and got off to a good start with a 4th place finish for Ladytron's 'Destroy Everything You Touch'. However, until now that would be their only ever top 10 hit, with most of their immediate follow-ups and their entries on their occasional comebacks since then (including 3 of their last 4 entries) failing to qualify. They've made up in a big way for that not so successful history now though as they were announced the winners of BJSC LXXXI with Allie X's 'Sanctuary' receiving 400 points, only the third song to reach the 400 mark and, in terms of percenatage of available points, just edging Meg Myers' 'Sorry' to be a bigger winner than all of last year's bar the seemingly unbeatable 'Easy Love', so setting an early high bar for biggest entry of the entire year.

Deandria decided ultimately to pass on hosting BJSC LXXXII (making them to date the only country to have won but never hosted), thus passing the winning rights onto the highest placed country to have never won. That was not the country that came 2nd because that was Aeroche again, with a third top 2 hit out of their last 5 entries and their 4th second placer in all to add to their 6 wins. Their latest smash hit was Zonderling's 'Crazy For You' featuring BISHØP (not to be confused with the other Bishop who represented St. Burbia in this contest) which received 326 points to be a distant but convincing runner up. Therefore taking the hosting job for the next contest is third placed Danaelanda. They achieved their biggest hit to date and first medal placement with 307 points for TheFatRat's 'Monody' (feat. Laura Brehm), going one position better than Colleen D'Agostino's 'Stay' (feat. deadmau5) last year. Returning after being banned from the last contest, Hendinia were heavily tipped to finally achieve a fourth win but ultimately settled for just another big hit but not quite winner, 4th place with 286 points for Against The Current's 'Outsiders'. The top 5 will go down in history as being completed by Dobago's entry, Imany's 'Don't Be So Shy' (Filatov & Karas Remix), with 261 points due to the aforementioned ~clerical error~. But we shan't begrudge that too much as it's a pretty great song and always good to see new countries getting hits. Dobago did slightly better with each successive entry for their first 3 (one of them also taking advantage of a clerical error hmm... CONSPIRACY) but this blows all of them out of the water, as none of the previous ones even made the top 30.

What also made a return after being banned for a month and submitted another Zechonia-esque weird and wonderful entry, but this time caught on much more. In their first contest they submitted semi-final votes but no final votes after Diablo Swing Orchestra's 'Justice For Saint Mary' DNQed. This time they went the other way round, snubbing the semi-final but voting in the final. And just as well they did because they managed to quite comfortably qualify anyway despite a deduction and ultimately came 7th in the final with KONTRUST's 'Sock 'N' Doll'. Will they ever enter again now? It is all a mystery ~ Flying the flag for foreign language entries alongside us in the top 10 were Jadakissnia coming in 8th with Sonia & Selena's 'Yo Quiero Bailar', their third top 10 hit and finishing 1 place higher here than it did in the 2001 Spanish Eurovision Song Contest selection process (:')). N DNTN came back from 2 consecutive DNQs to match the 9th place finish of their last qualifier with Kazaky's 'Milk-Choc'. The top 10 was rounded out by the hosts Kluminican Republic with BLEITCH's 'Speaking Of Moments'. Klum Rep didn't manage an auto-qualifier after either of their recent 2nd placers, but clearly didn't really need one on either occasion. Now watch Aeroche get one for the next contest because they always seem to when they have the chance. Lol.

2016's first couple of debuting countries were Suedeonia and Zaminton. The former unfortunately didn't make the final with debut entry 'Healing' by In Hoodies. The latter did qualify with Rykka's 'Movies', a track which won the PopJustice Song Contest but didn't do near as well here, coming 39th out of 41, though Zaminton didn't help themselves out by failing to vote in the final resulting in a 33% deduction and forcing them to face a ban already. Maybe they'll return for contest 83. Bignia-Zaragovina's grand return to BJSC sadly fell flat as they came last in their semi-final, while other comebacks from Jukianië and New Lexico also failed to qualify.

Aside from the 4 countries setting new bests in the top 10, 2 more countries also achieved new peaks. Ultraviolenceland beat their peak for a second contest in a row and edged ever closer to a first top 10, coming 11th with Nimmo's 'Dilute This'. Taahino finally beat the 19th place finish of their first ever entry, although only just, coming 18th with Tonight Alive's 'How Does It Feel?', which was aided a bit by Republic of Adonia not voting on time again (oops) and facing a 15% deduction for their entry 'dreamsicle' by dumblonde (which still finished a decent enough 19th).

FLOPPING in dead last 41st out of 41 were the epic flops who are Ramrynia  They took the wooden spoon with Venior's 'Sugar Rush' on 92 points. The only other entry to fail to clear 100 was Tinnmark's entry 'Brightest Light' by FDVM feat. Josh Wantie which had one more point.

Well done on that top 10 placing! Surprise hits are the best kind of hits tbh. Great song from you once again, glad the feeling was mutual.

I miss rankings. I wanted to know if you thought my song was Ruth B "Lost Boy" level trash or around the same level as Brielle

About the same as Brielle. Possibly a bit better. But I already barely remember it. You can do better than this Cody! x

In honour of our ~SICK~ hosts we have decided to go all out with some hard-hitting electro house (right?) beats. Picture somewhat related

Sir Ethan of Ethanola was approached for comment on this song and reported back:
"~SICK~ :music: ~ an absolute bop of immense proportions :dancing:  :dancing:"

(not really, gonna be slightly embarrassing now if he doesn't even like the song)

Digitalism hope to 'Blitz' their way to success in Danaelanda

As revealed earlier in the latest revival of the Showcase format, Persephonia's 61st main contest entry officially comes from German production duo Digitalism, our first ever German-born entrants (though Sogand from BJSC LXXIII was also a German national, she was born in Iran). The track, 'Blitz', is much like our last couple of entries a bit of an archival pick as it was released back in November 2010 ahead of the 2011 release of their second studio album 'I Love You Dude' on which it featured. However, the track only recently came to the attention of the Persephonian BJSC Committee and, after a thorough doublecheck that Digitalism had definitely never been sent before (still mildly surprising), it was added to our potential list and now been sent very soon after this as we just couldn't pass up such a gigantic banger, regardless of slightly-uninspired-by-Persephonian-standards artist choice.

Continuing our recent war on the English language, which seems to have inspired a great deal of foreign language entries in BJSC LXXXII (when did Ashton have this much impact??), it's another instrumental entry from us, this time from the ~electro house~ genre unless Dan would like to correct me again (yes I know we make this comment every time we send a dance entry Lol), and much like our last instrumental entry 'Waves' by DANCE WITH THE DEAD, it kicks in with some relentless beats from the very first second and barely lets up throughout the entire song. We hope this can get everyone moving on the legendary dancefloors of Danaelanda and get those points flowing in for another decent sized hit for Persephonia B-)

The official video is linked below, featuring a combination of some interesting grainy, jumpy, mildly unsettling black and white footage of a lightning storm - fun fact, 'blitz' is the German word for lightning, hence the above teaser post :magic: - and some generic nightclub scenes, also in black and white. Black and white videos are our new thing this year apparently. Watch below if you want. And don't forget to vote for us if you're in semi-final 1 and like what you hear ~~

I've been wanting to send "Wolves" by them but I never found the right time to use it! Hopefully this does well :D

i did too! but it didn't feel right. (FABULOUS video)

love this bre

Good choice, I charted it in 2010 though it never made my Top 20 as it got a little repetitive for me I think.

“Pogo” was their biggest hit on my chart - Top 5 in 2007!

Thanks for all the commentsssss ~

I did see that you'd charted it at the time when I was ~researching~ it Doctor B! (Dandy* also did). I looked up a few other Digitalism songs when I came across this one, including 'Pogo', which is a good tune too, but 'Blitz' is definitely the highlight of what I've listened to.

'Pogo' and '2 Hearts' are two of my favourite tracks of the past ten years so I've got very high expectations for this! :)

This is my review of 'Blitz':

Cheapness reigns over BJSC Re:LOADED again

The seventh edition of BJSC Re:LOADED - hosted by Farahtyn, and the first such rerun contest to include semi-finals - concluded with a win for M.K.L.'s entry, the very little known and inspired song 'Just Dance' by Lady Gaga feat. Colby O'Donis. In fairness, it was somewhat inspired at the time. It does mean there is still yet to be a Re:LOADED with the same winner as its original contest, as 'Just Dance' was second behind the similarly cheap 'I Kissed A Girl' by Katy Perry (Mdiče's entry) in BJSC VII.

'Just Dance' received 66 points in this contest, only 2 ahead of its closest challenger, the more inspired 'Can't Let Go' by Király Linda representing Sangria. Some way behind the top 2, the next 4 songs were only a point apart. Third place with 47 points went to Kingdom of Shadow's 'Heartbreat (Make Me A Dancer)' by Freemasons feat. Sophie Ellis-Bextor, which failed to qualify in the original contest, but went on to be the inaugural winner of The Best of the Rejects. Also on 47, Federal Republic of Ashton came 4th with Red Blooded Women's 'Colour Me Dirty', while with 46 points each 5th and 6th went to Faztickle entry 'Fading Like A Flower' by Dancing DJs vs. Roxette and the aforementioned 'I Kissed A Girl' respectively. Persephonia voted for none of these songs.

The semi-final format was much appreciated as a full 6 of our votes in the final, including our 12 pointer, failed to qualify for the original final.

Persephonia's votes and full rankings for the final and both semi-finals are published below.
