Surkin surges safely (s)through semi-final

It was announced today that 'Oedo 606' by Surkin, Persephonia's entrant to BJSC LXIII in FARC and Aeroche (and formerly Kathaldazia before their officials' sudden disappearance), has qualified for the final. This marks a 4th qualifier in a row for our country, officially now our second best qualification streak after the hot run of six qualifiers between XLVIII and LIII inclusive. It's our 19th song to make it through the semi-finals out of 34 songs to go through them (7 further entries of ours made the final by default in the One Big Final era and Gent Mason's 'Eden' also autoqualified).

All bar one of the 7 highest ranked songs in the Persephonian semi-final 1 televote made the final. We can reveal the ranks of the songs that failed to qualify now but as usual full semi-final televote stats will be revealed after the contest is over:

5th {6pts} Terra Dinosaur // Bloodgroup - Cut Out Your Tongue (Girl Unit Remix) 8.5/10

8th {3pts} Florina // Prinze George - Victor 8/10

Bonde Do Rolê perform averagely in spinoff

Persephonia continue to fail to achieve much success in the recently revived BJSC spinoffs. The second of the revival, Foreign Language II hosted in former arch-nemesis nation Allecian, saw Persephonia represented by a veritable domestic classic in 'Solta O Frango' by Brazilian band Bonde Do Rolê. However, the song was not as popular among other nations as it finished a rather beige 27th out of 40 songs, taking in a total of 79 points.

The real winner of the spinoff was Skall, who also won the first Foreign Language spinoff (which Persephonia did not enter). Their entry 'Vi' by jj and jr received the most points, but because Skall's votes were submitted after the voting deadline they received a deduction of 33% and ultimately finished 9th. The published winner then was Sandebörg with their entry 'Ekko' by NOAH, which received 180 points. This marked Sandebörg's first BJSC victory, besting the 2nd place achieved in both BJSC LIII and The Best of BJSC LI-LX by 'Dance Our Tears Away' by John De Sohn feat. Kristin Amparo. Second placed Aeroche (with Kraftwerk's 'Tour De France Étape 2') lagged by just a single point.

Another bottom 10 for Persephonia

Persephonia went into the final of BJSC LXIII in FARC and Aeroche with lower expectations than last month and we weren't wrong to do so as our latest entry 'Oedo 606' by Surkin became another bottom 10 finisher (the 12th in our history out of 27 final appearances in total).

The song actually finished a place higher than previous entry 'The Return', settling in 23rd place out of the 31 songs in the final. It received 4 fewer points though, for a total of 69. (Heehee). 2 other songs also received 69 points but Persephonia came last out of them in the tiebreak due to receiving the fewest votes. It is the first time Persephonia have come 23rd in the contest. The song's biggest supporters were Aeroche and Cadelicia who each awarded it 10 points, followed by Quintessa and Terra Dinosaur who provided 8 points each.

It was then revealed that 'Oedo 606' finished 13th out of 27 songs and 15 qualifiers in semi-final 1, with 58 points received. This came as somewhat of a relief after our underperfomance in the previous contest came despite a strong semi-final finish.

In better news, Persephonia still remain in the top 3 countries of the year by total points received despite our lesser success in the last 2 contests. However, this is likely to be the last month we can continue to ride off the success of 'EMPIRE' in the YTD.

Final results commentary + Persephonia's televote results

Just three contests after they last won, Elëdan found themselves back in the gold position in BJSC LXIII as they claimed a fifth win with drag icon RuPaul's 'Sissy That Walk'. It means of course the contest is heading back to Elëdan for its next edition. This may or may not cause the end of the world. 'Sissy That Walk' received a total of 169 points, including eight top scores of 12 and a further three sets of 10 (together comprising just shy of 75% of the song's points).

Just 2 points off receiving their 5th win instead, Aeroche finished 2nd with 'Wonky' by Orbital feat. Lady Leshurr taking home 167 points. This would have been enough to see them overhaul Elëdan on the BJSC medal table if it weren't for the small technicality of Elëdan being the country to beat them. Nonetheless it marks a record extending sixth consecutive top 5 finish for the undisputed kings of the contest. Some way behind in 3rd were Hendinia with Peking Duk's 'High' (feat. Nicole Millar), receiving 129 points including 12 from Persephonia. PNB are proudly biased and would like to say FUCK Y'ALL for 'High' not winning when it clearly should have. The top 5 were completed by Galantis' 'You' receiving a bizarrely high 121 points for Altyr Muunilinst in 4th and CL's 'MTBD' (also known as 'Manboob') giving Daehun a second good result of the year in 5th with 120 points.

Vülkyria seem to be fully in success mode as their entry 'Settle Down' by Lushington finished 6th, a place higher than their previous entry following a string of DNQs and a last place in their previous post-return entries. Bignia-Zaragovina marked their return to the final after 3 straight DNQs with style as latest entry 'Touch' by Shura came 7th. FSR Rontvia's dreadful entry, Sweet California's 'This Is The Life', somehow came 8th to give them a billionth top 10 finish and their first of the year. The People's Republic of Ginsay Lohands opened their BJSC run with 3 straight qualifiers last year but none of them made the top 10. Their first entry to qualify since then has broken that streak as We Are Legends finished 9th with 'Begging For Amnesia' (feat. Caroline Ailin), representing the nation under its new name of Oslol. In 10th was host nation FARC's autoqualifier 'Sensibility' by Elizabeth Rose which bucked 2014's trend thus far of host entries finishing near the bottom of the table.

Every country bar one in the LXIII final also entered the last contest so this section of the commentary where we usually talk about returning or debuting countries is a bit empty. The one returning nation in the final was B.a.N.G who we'll get to in a moment. Cumulonimbia entered for the first time this month but failed to qualify despite a rather brilliant debut entry in DyE's 'Fantasy', while former holders of the record for most DNQs without ever qualifying Quintessa also returned to the contest after a lengthy break and added a 7th DNQ to their collection with Pia Mia's 'Red Love'. Singerpurear have now more than doubled Quintessa's record run of 6 DNQs as they claimed a 13th consecutive non-qualifier since their debut with latest entry 'In Your Bed' by Ariana And The Rose.

Aside from Elëdan and Altyr Muunilinst matching their best finishes and Oslol reaching a new peak (plus Vülkyria under their current name) there was one other new best in LXIII, from Jamvale who came 22nd with Kris Menace's 'Waiting For You' (feat. Black Hills), 7 places higher than their only previous qualifier.

The rest of the Jubirdia nations outside the top 10: Ramrynia were 14th with Bebe Rexha's 'I Can't Stop Drinking About You'; Allecian came 15th with dark horse success 'Scarred For Life' by Sabina Ddumba giving them another top 20 after their last six qualifiers all finished outside; Movement's 'Us' finished 19th for Trifoski; Aquafina claimed another top 20 finish with Adelén's 'Always On My Mind' finishing 20th after her previous entry 'Baila Conmigo' failed to qualify; Bellamia came 24th with Madeline Juno's 'Like Lovers Do', the lowest Jubirdia entry in the final, just behind us by one point.

Coming back to B.a.N.G, they took this month's wooden spoon finishing 31st with the Elephante remix of AYER's 'Young'. The notoriously frequent non-voters failed to vote in the final resulting in a 33% deduction in the points for the song to 31, but if it's any consolation to them they were already last anyway as they received 47 points, one less than the song in 30th (Tinnmark entry 'Speed Of Sound' by Frøder).

The full results of the Persephonian televote are published below.

Persephonia is all about NATIONAL DIVERSITY for BJSC LXIV.

In other news, the second and final round of voting for the presidency of Persephonia has been completed and the result is due to be announced later today. The recent surge of support for opposition candidate Dan J. Kotek should make this a close result but Persephonian News Bulletin's political people still predict a third term for incumbent Salim Zosimus.

EDIT: It is official, Salim Zosimus has been re-elected as the President of Persephonia. Joy all around. Except from his opponents.

TĀLĀ represents Persephonia in BJSC LXIV

In our continuing quest to increase our national diversity Persephonia has sent its first ever Iranian act to BJSC (I know, you thought we'd sent loads of those didn't you!) in the form of TĀLĀ, a producer/singer-songwriter born in Iran although now based in the UK. Her song 'The Duchess' was originally confirmed as our entry to the 64th edition of the contest but it was changed to 'Serbia' (another track from her debut EP also called 'The Duchess') shortly afterwards.

The song continues Persephonia's run of electronic entries but also has elements of soul/R&B (ish) with a simple but effective vocal hook: "you give me something, just what I need..." Listen below and don't forget to vote for us if you're in semi-final 1, we're gonna need it.

The confirmation of this entry has forced recently re-elected President of Persephonia Salim Zosimus to deny the country and its BJSC Committee's association with the Aesop record label and it is a pure coincidence that tracks from 3 of the label's 4 releases have now become Persephonian BJSC entries (following SOHN's 'The Wheel' and Gent Mason's 'Eden').

The real winner of the spinoff was Skall, who also won the first Foreign Language spinoff (which Persephonia did not enter). Their entry 'Vi' by jj and jr received the most points

I agree.

'Serbia' video arrives

Persephonia's first 3 entries of 2014 were all accompanied by some interesting visuals, which were part of the reason they stood out so much to the song selection committee. Until recently however our latest entry, 'Serbia' by TĀLĀ, did not have any music video. This situation is now rectified. Check out the video below, although as the YouTube commenters are eager to point out, it has absolutely nothing to do with the country of Serbia.

In other news, following controversies resulting in the seizure of the current contest by the moderating nations of Ashton and Bignia-Zaragovina, 'Serbia' has along with all 51 other entries been placed into a single large final, with the semi-finals entirely cancelled. PNB will still report Persephonia's original semi-final votes at the closing of the contest.

Pretty spectacular video and you know I always have more time for entries that have a good full package of sound & video. Love, love.

Persephonia always bring the visuals how~

TĀLĀ bags Persephonia a tenth top 15 finish

TĀLĀ's 'Serbia', Persephonia's entry to BJSC LXIV (ultimately hosted in Bignia-Zaragovina with some help from Ashton after the original hosts Vülkyria and Elëdan controversially collapsed), finished fifteenth out of 52 songs, it was announced on Monday evening.

As the contest was a one-off return to the One Big Final system, this finish was accompanied by unusually high points for that position of 133. No country awarded the song a maximum score of 18 or the second highest score of 15, but it received 13 points from four nations (FARC, Skall, Syndare and Terra Avium) and 12 points from a further two (D'yermak'er and N DNTN). 21 out of 49 other voting countries in total ranked the song within their top 15, hence awarding it points in the extended voting system.

The One Big Final system was a blessing for Persephonia this month, as it was calculated by an independent Danaelandan observer that if all votes were converted to the usual 12-point system (scaling down each country's top 10 and discarding their 11th to 15th favourite songs), 'Serbia' would have finished just 27th.

Recently re-elected President Salim Zosimus was personally pleased with another top 15 finish, the 10th in the country's history, although disappointingly only four of those 10 have made it into the top 10. It also allows us to comfortably claim that the track constitutes a 5th legitimate qualifier in a row for Persephonia (as it finished well within the top 32, the original planned size of the final), putting us just one qualification away from matching our record streak.

Final results commentary + Persephonia's final jury voting and scrapped semi-final televote results

Some thought it would never happen again, but they have been conclusively proven wrong - FSR Rontvia claimed another win in BJSC LXIV. Their entry, the curious but anthemic ballad/trance mashup 'RAMelia (Tribute To Amelia)' by RAM and Susana captured the hearts of the voting nations including Persephonia (who awarded the track 13 points) and topped the list with 284 points received. Unadjusted for points inflation, that means the top three highest scoring winners of all time were all FSR Rontvia entries, following the two winners by Sheelah which took advantage of the 18-point extended voting system the last time (no pun intended) it was implemented, with 'Psycho' topping on 297 points in BJSC XXVI and 'The Last Time' taking home 282 points in BJSC XXXI. FSR Rontvia's last win was shortly after that in BJSC XXXV with Chart Music's 'All My Life'. That was their 7th win, meaning 'RAMelia (Tribute To Amelia)' is a record-extending 8th win for the country. It is by some distance the biggest gap between Rontvian wins.

The contest was largely about FSR Rontvia but we should acknowledge the rest of the songs too of course. FARC ran Rontvia extremely close in the end, apparently looking set to tie for the win before it was announced that the controversial votes from Ashton were accepted. (The FARC entry, 'Trapped' by The Subs feat. Colonel Abrams, would have lost the tiebreak anyway). It thus finished 2nd with 266 points, continuing the stratospheric return to the contest for the former Kellyana Kingdom. Third place went to Syndare entry 'Family Tree' by Meadowlark scoring 224 points, just ahead of fourth placed Oh, Be Clever of Daehun with 'Next To You' taking 222 points and Fljótavík's 5th placed entry 'Do You Feel What I Feel' by Rex The Dog feat. Jamie McDermott (of The Irrepressibles) with 217 points.

D'yermak'er were the 6th and final country to break the 200 points mark, scoring exactly 200 points to finish 6th with 'Youth' by Ben Khan. PNB has no opinion on this disgraceful stealing strong result by an act who nearly represented Persephonia last month. Heavyweight """indie""" nations Aeroche and N DNTN tied just behind with 198 points, the tie naturally being won by Aeroche who continued to do no wrong with their latest entry 'Untrue' by Tchami delivering their seventh straight top 10 finish, coming 7th. N DNTN's entry 'Salt Carousel' by Evian Christ thus finished 8th, aided by Persephonia's full 18 points. Séyetana had another scrape into the top 10 but managed to just about do better than 10th for once as their entry, ZHU's 'Paradise Awaits', came 9th with 181 points. That was just one points ahead of 10th placed Halsey's 'New Americana' which gave an emphatic new best finish to the previously somewhat struggling nation Florina.

New countries are starting to flow into the contest again. Two made their debuts this month, Harmonica and Jukianië. At one point in the final results reveal they occupied the bottom 2 places in the results, but they finished a little stronger than that. Harmonica's first offering 'Crazy' by Kat Dahlia was 35th, while Jukianië did 2 places better than that with Esha's 'Luna' coming 33rd. Last month's debuting country Cumulonimbia picked up their first qualifier with Riton's 'Inside My Head' (feat. Meleka). By default it may have been but it probably would have genuinely qualified as it finished a respectable 20th. Quintessa and Singerpurear have been around rather a lot longer than Cumulonimbia but never previously qualified, having 8 and 13 DNQs to their names respectively. Both finally picked up a decent result (again, qualifying by default but finishing inside the top 32 nonetheless). Quintessa's wonderful offering 'Who You Are' by Natural Animal came 21st while Singerpurear finally made their mark with a 25th place finish for Dirty Vegas' 'Let The Night'.

Yehesi and Danaelanda, two members of the emerging dance bloc, have a combined total of zero top 10 hits on their records, but countless top 20s. Cruelly they finished 11th and 12th respectively. The former gave Yehesi a new best finish (with 'Tico' by Fox Stevenson) while the latter (the Nexity remix of Laurel's 'Fire Breather') matched Danaelanda's previous best finish, also held by Flume's 'Insane' (feat. Moon Holiday). No other countries not already mentioned got new personal bests but Unovia did get their best finish in some fifteen contests with Fefe Dobson's 'Celebrate' coming 17th.

Quick rundown of the Jubirdia nation results outside the top 10 as usual: Ramrynia were 14th with Emerentia's 'Silver Bullet' somehow; Hendinia's Paris Blohm feat. Angel Taylor came 16th with 'Presence'; Allecian picked up a second top 20 in a row with Punk Party's 'You And I' (feat. Kelly Sweet) coming 18th; Gazelle Twin came 26th with 'Belly Of The Beast' for Trifoski; Cassie Steele of Bellamia took 'Mad' to 28th; Aquafina came only 31st with 'Minus One' by A.N.D.Y. feat. Tayla despite receiving more votes than most of the top 30; Skall were 36th with Pandr Eyez' 'Little Bit'; host nation Bignia-Zaragovina came just 45th with My Crazy Girlfriend's 'Crazy Stupid Love'.

This month's wooden spoon went to - almost inevitably - Tartford. The nation has persistently flopped in the contest since its comeback late last year, only qualifying once, and there wasn't really ever much chance of Belinda Carlisle being the one to give them big success. Her song 'Goodbye Just Go' finished 52nd and last by some distance, though it picked up 27 points, quite a far cry from the nul-pointer that some predicted.

Due to suspected vote hacking the Persephonian televote was thrown out for the final and an expert jury decided our points, so we cannot provide a full ranking of all 51 songs in the final. We can however reveal the full results of the televote from the scrapped semi-final.

The previous teaser post was seized as the Persephonian BJSC Committee has changed our entry mid-contest a third month in a row. Such instability shall not be tolerated in the future.

Meanwhile.

Join the #hypeQ for Quirke in BJSC LXV

As the 65th edition of the BuzzJack Song Contest commences in its spiritual home of FSR Rontvia we are very excited to be able to announce Persephonia's latest (44th) entry is 'Break A Mirrored Leg' by British ambient/electronica producer Quirke. The song, taken from the Young Turks-signed producer's debut EP 'Acid Beth', blends ambient noise with frantic heavy electronic future beats to deliver an unmatchable sonic experience that we are certain will light up the lower end of the scoreboard of semi-final 1. Bon appetit! (Or, er, whatever the hearing equivalent of appetite is).

The song title alludes to both bad luck (breaking a mirror) and good luck ('breaking a leg') which pretty much sums up the Persephonian BJSC Committee's thoughts about sending the track. It has luckily been drawn into the same semi-final as N DNTN, where the song first made waves a month ago, and early odds from the host nation are fairly favourable (placing it as 15th favourite to win) but we expect the track to be heavily divisive and we'll need a bit of luck to make it through to a 6th final in a row.

Quirke delivers on predictions to match Persephonia's record Q streak

Despite some internal doubts, Quirke has sailed through to the final of BJSC LXV with 'Break A Mirrored Leg' to give Persephonia a sixth qualifier in a row (including admittedly two autoqualifiers though the first was well earnt by the success of Kids Of The Apocalypse and the second, last month's 'Serbia', finished well enough to make it fair to assume it would have qualified anyway so we still claim it). This matches our record achieved in contests XLVIII through LIII, excluding the run of eleven 'qualifiers' throughout the One Big Final era, several of which would not have qualified under the semi-final format.

The final is kicking off in FSR Rontvia's capital Constarvan now and coming with Quirke are most of the Persephonian voting public's favourites from semi-final 1, with the notable exception of Ajanaeda's debut entrant Healyum. PNB are also displeased to report the failure of Elëdan's brilliant entry 'Sola Fide' by Ben Frost, as the song is likely to impact the national chart when the compiler can be bothered to publish it.

This really grew on me through the week, after an initial 'ok' verdict, it went on a steady upward trajectory in my affections. Great entry!

Quirke continues suspiciously repetitive position run, coming 23rd

Quirke's 'Break A Mirrored Leg' is officially qualified as a TIER 3 hit for Persephonia, duly finishing in the 23rd-25th region (23rd to be precise, our 2nd finish in that position following Surkin's 'Oedo 606' two months ago). Since the start of 2013 our country is still yet to finish outside the curiously narrow regions of 2nd-3rd (TIER 1 hits), 14th-15th (TIER 2 hits) and 23rd-25th (TIER 3 hits as above) when qualifying for the final.

Anyhow the song took home a respectable 88 points which is more than Surkin and also more than Paris XY got to finish a similar 24th with 'The Return' 3 contests back. It's thus our 3rd largest points total of the year behind the inflated finish of 'Serbia' and the completely uninflated finish of 'EMPIRE' which incidentally would still have won every other contest this year besides the one it was entered in, based on percentage of total possible points. Not bitter.

Among those 88 points were two top scores of 12 - we had a nice little 12 swap going on with Skall, while Jamvale provided a rather unexpected second maximum. Quirke also received 10 points each from regular supporters Kylienips and N DNTN (we really couldn't live without you two) and 8 points from Cumulonimbia. Big thanks to all of you and the 9 other countries who gave Quirke points.

Final results commentary + Persephonia's televote results

In yet another nailbitingly tense contest it was finally the time for Persephonia's favourite bloc voting partner N DNTN to win the BuzzJack Song Contest as they took Hervé and Zebra Katz' 'Tear The House Up' to the top with 155 points. This follows 3 previous 2nd place finishes for the country. The overall favourite to win, Altyr Muunilinst, were also chasing a debut win but had to settle for a new peak of 2nd (their first top 3 finish) as Rae Morris' 'Cold' (featuring former N DNTN act Fryars) got one point fewer than the winner, ending on 154. Hendinia finished 3rd with Sophia Del Carmen's 'Lipstick' receiving 148 points. A late tip for the win, Zechonia couldn't quite go all the way but did match their personal best of 4th with Tuomas Holopainen's 'The Last Sled' (145 points). The top 5 was completed by Séyetana, for whom Archis (aka Dia Frampton) came 5th with 'Blood' receiving 130 points.

Kylienips were another country hunting for a debut win and being tipped for big things but it was another month without a win (65 contests now, every single one to ever happen) as 'On My Mind' by SomethingALaMode feat. DWNTWN came 6th for them. Debuting country Republic of Adonia put in a strong first finish of 7th with Alex Adair's 'Make Me Feel Better'. Isconia came top 10 for the first time in 14 countries as Avicii-esque 'All These Roads' by Sultan + Ned Shepard feat. Zella Day and Sam Martin ended up 8th. Daehun were 9th with Alison Wonderland's 'I Want U', giving them 4 top 10s and a last place in the year to date, while Oslol got a second top 10 with Meow's 'Skeletons' in 10th.

Aside from Republic of Adonia one other country that debuted this contest qualified for the final; Desbuanda's first offering 'Lions, Tigers, Bears' by Heathers was a surprise qualifier and finished 30th out of 32. Ajanaeda also debuted this contest but missed out on qualifying. Of the 5 countries who claimed their first final appearance 'by default' last month, 3 qualified legitimately this time. Cumulonimbia did a tad better than last month, finishing 19th with the Ade Laugee remix of Max Richter's take on the Vivaldi composition 'Spring 1'. Singerpurear also improved on last month, with their latest entry 'Hurting' by Friendly Fires finishing 21st - a breakthrough after 13 straight DNQs since their debut (and then their 'default' qualification last month). Jukianië's second entry 'Smoke' by Lisa Lois finished 26th, giving them a first top 32 finish.

One more country besides those already mentioned reached a new peak this month - poor brave Tartford came 28th with Humate's 'Love Stimulation', only their third of nine entries to qualify (one of which was Belinda Carlisle's emphatic last place finish in the last contest which barely counts as a qualifier). That beats the 30th place finish of previous qualifier 'Dynamite State' by Sky Ferreira. Also notable, hosts FSR Rontvia got their first 13th place finish with Andreas Bourani's 'Auf Uns', meaning they've now finished in every position in the top 20 at least once. Danaelanda finished 15th with the Club Edit of Ferreck Dawn and Redondo's future hit 'Love Too Deep' giving them a 6th top 15 finish without ever making the top 10.

As usual here's the rundown of other finishes for Jubirdia nations: Bignia-Zaragovina came 12th with RHODES' 'Your Soul'; Ramrynia didn't quite live up to their hype as 'Second Life' was 17th for Kitty; Skall scraped the top 20 with the gorgeous 'Emanate' by Phoria; Blawan's 'Getting Me Down' came 21st, ahead of Persephonia by one point, for Trifoski; D'yermak'er finished four points behind Persephonia to come 24th with LOLO feat. Giggs' 'Gangsters' (XYconstant Remix); Bellamia's surprise qualifier Lewis Watson came 31st with 'Stay'.

The wooden spoon this month went to the contest's other autoqualifier, FARC entry 'Lullaby' by Luha. The track is poised to be the final entry in FARC's second run in the contest which may prove to be as short as their first foray into the contest years back as Kellyana Kingdom. Controversy aside, the fact is it finished 32nd of 32 songs with 23 points, just half as many as the song in 31st.
