As a connection to the 'vinyl revival' article i posted here, I thought I'd ask the question :

I have just pre-ordered 'Wannabe' by the Spice Girls a couple of days ago which is getting a special picture disc vinyl only release for Virgin celebrating their 40th birthday (http://store.universal-music.co.uk/restofworld/uvinyl-spice-girls-wannabe-7-picture-disc-vinyl-2013/invt/0602537540617?utm_source=Facebook&utm_medium=AddThis&utm_campaign=UMG%2BStores)

Previous to that it was 2009's Abnormally Attracted to Sin by Tori Amos on release week.

I bought the vinyl of Daft Punk Random Access Memories in May :).

Last single was David Bowie on RSD this year & before that Sex on Fire by KofLeon in 2008!

I think it was the "Accidentally In Love" 7" picture disc by Counting Crows. Nearly 10 years ago now!

Like Vidcapper, I have an extensive vinyl singles collection but not record player to play them on.

Nothing since 2010, I usually collect pictue discs vinyls, or coloured vinyls and these are very rare items. I also got a large collection of albums, 12 inch, 7 inch, of vinyls that is, but I don't have a record deck no more.
I bought the 12" of 'Turn On Tune In Cop Out' by Freak Power secondhand for 49p a couple of weeks ago. Last new vinyl was the day before, I got the new Turin Brakes LP. It looks very pretty too.
My last vinyl album was also my first - Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds. There's several vinyls that I've wanted to get but they are far too expensive! :( I'm keeping an eye out on charity shops and there's a shop that sells them in Hull.
My last vinyl single was Adele's Skyfall and the last album was JT's 20/20 Experience part 2 of 2 :)

I think if they lowered the price of them they could become much more popular. They are much more beautiful than cd singles and I'd buy them if my favorite artists released them, same with albums. I have a few Tori Amos vinyl albums but they are more expensive than the cd, are they really that much more expensive to produce?

I totally agree - at my school, there's a lot of indie/rock fans who like to collect vinyls so I presume it's the same over the country. Even if they were £10, they would really take off again. I see that the OCC published a report on how LPs have sold 532k this year and could exceed 700k (I think the total was 330k+ for 2012 and the amount has been increasing for the past 5 years) so it's obvious they are popular.

Perhaps the same will happen to cassettes one day.

The last ones I bought were Gabrielle Aplin - Panic Cord (7" vinyl) and Kylie Minogue - Flower (7" vinyl/picture disc).

Intending on buying Emeli Sandé - Heaven (Vinyl) soon, seeing as it's being released. :w00t:

They are a bit more expensive to produce, yeah, and to distribute as well - being larger, heavier and more breakable. All of these are part of the reason the industry promoted the shift to CD in the first place, and of course now that vinyl is a minority of the market there aren't as many economies of scale. Nonetheless labels do seem to have been milking it a lot in the last couple of years - the wild disparity in price between releases is kind of a clue to that.

Yeah I get what you mean about logistics and I'm also sure the mark up on vinyls is much more than cds. I'm sure they could knock most albums maybe down to £15 and all singles £2.99. I spent over £20 on the last Tori Amos album I bought on vinyl, which seems hefty to me.

I've bought a few in recent years - usually 7" picture discs.

FYI, ChartsPlus publishes a weekly T50 vinyl albums chart (obviously those of you with a sub already know that).

Last week's #1 was Anna Calvi - One Breath (which was only #32 overall).

Do people call them vinyls?

As far as I'm concerned vinyl is a word like information or furniture - not pluralised.

Last vinyl album was Foals "Holy Fire", and last vinyl single was Arctic Monkeys "Do I Wanna Know?". I have always bought my personal chart #1s in physical form (where available) so after CD singles pretty much died in 2010 there are quite a few 7" vinyl to represent some of my #1s.

I don't know if I agree that the sound is better (my decks and stereo system probably don't do them justice), but I have a frame on the wall for the 12" and rotate them around - they look great.

Funny you should mention Foals actually, that was an example I was thinking of quoting about record company mark-ups. Admittedly it's a double LP but it's not (AFAIK) a particularly special one, not on coloured vinyl or excitingly packaged - and it still costs something like £23, which is twice what some LPs cost even though they must have cost about the same to make. You don't even get a download code! Meanwhile the CD version costs the same as other CDs.

That Turin Brakes record was £12:99 plus postage, and it's on splatter vinyl so it would have cost more to manufacture.

And that Emeli Sandé 7"? Looks like it's going to set you back about nine quid.

It was £17 from recordstore.co.uk, that's not especially expensive for vinyl is it?
