Posted November 16, 201311 yr In terms of your general pop tastest and inspired by the theme of Glee a week ago. They were debating whether they were a "Katy" or a "GaGa" group. KATY PERRY: Like the more simple, safe and at times a little "generic" but still big pop songs with a more grounded and "girl next door" personality. or LADY GAGA: You like the bigger, more riskier pop songs and the more eccentric the personlity, the better. (I hope someone can help put a proper definition together for me - really crap at things like that, sorry.) This isn't a "Katy Perry vs. Lady GaGa" outright "rivalry" topic. It's more based on you and your pop tastes. Some people prefer the more simpler and safe pop songs, whereas others prefer their pop songs with a bit more eccentricity and one which "push the boundary" more. Hope this makes sense!
November 16, 201311 yr Love 'em both. As I had to vote I went for Gaga as I feel Katy is a bit more vanilla...
November 16, 201311 yr Definitely a Katy Perry. A song doesn't have to be edgy or risky for me to like it, it just has to sound good. Not that edgier or riskier songs don't appeal, but I've never labelled 'generic' as a bad thing particularly, as long as it's good!
November 16, 201311 yr I would say Katy, being honest. I don't mind eccentricity in pop music it's just that Gaga doesn't bring things in the right quantities. Half the songs on ARTPOP could be amazing, but for one reason or another they aren't, kind of like adding salt to a cake instead of sugar. It looks fine, but when you taste it it's horrible. Katy on the other hand defines by the numbers pop. She clearly works very hard but she's not an artist, she's a pop puppet. I don't have any issue with that at all and am not judging her in any way before anyone jumps at me about that. I just think, at the end of the day, more often than not I will chose to listen to a good, if uninspired, pop song because it's all about that instant HIT for me and Gaga, at least in the last 2 years, hasn't really been about that.
November 16, 201311 yr I'm not against the odd simple pop song, but generally REALLY basic songs like this bore me. I generally much prefer it when artists take a risk, I sometimes for whatever reason can't get into it, but its definitely more interesting this way. So yeah, probably a 'Lady Gaga' overall.
November 16, 201311 yr Author I am definitely a KATY PERRY on the whole. The more simpler pop songs seem to have the better melody to me and it's what I'm a sucker for and what I mainly look for in a pop song. There's nothing wrong in the more crazy pop songs, every now and again, but I definitely feel like I enjoy an album full of the safer hits, more than an album full of pop songs which deem to "push the boundaries". On albums like those though I do find at least one diamond that sticks out more than the rest and honestly songs like 'Paparazzi', 'Dance In the Dark' and 'The Edge of Glory' I think I prefer over majority (if not all) of Katy's albums (just to make it easier to compare) but when in the grand scheme of things, I prefer and go back to the more predictable and safer choice of big pop.
November 16, 201311 yr 'A Lady Gaga'. Generic pop music has to have a sensational melody to win me over, or some other charm to it. I always appreciate slightly riskier stuff.
November 16, 201311 yr On the whole I'd say I was a bit in the middle, I tend to like a bit of everything  but when I look at my favourite songs, they lean more to the "Katy Perry" side of things.
November 16, 201311 yr I adore both but Gaga more, though I'd have to say I'm a Katy. Most of my favourite artists are hardly groundbreaking - Taylor Swift, Kelly Clarkson, Katy Perry, Jessica Mauboy and even queen Demi can be seen as fairly 'basic'. I adore Gaga and her style, but there are a good few similar artists who don't do it well so on the whole I am definitely a Katy.
November 16, 201311 yr GAGA I actually did download the Katy Perry album and there were a couple of decent tracks there but Gaga just excites me more (by a LONG margin too). Music has to interest me for it to transcend into something I truly love, Gaga has managed it with quite a few of her tracks where as Katy has probably only done it with Hot n Cold at a push.
November 16, 201311 yr Gaga ALL THE WAY (in this sense) so called "safer" pop songs aren't always bad (they can sometimes be rly good even!), but i do kinda prefer pop tunes with a bit of personality- or at least an interesting quality or two! (IF done well, that is)
November 16, 201311 yr Lady Gaga. HER music doesn't excite me at all which makes me choosing that a little ironic, and I far prefer Katy (not that I think of her as generic, I really find more personality and risk in Katy's music overall than I do Gaga's, sorry for Eric Blobbing this but taking all their tracks as a whole and ignoring their offstage personalities I feel I know more about Katy's personality than I do Gaga's). HOWEVER as far as the definitions go, definitely on that side. I love eccentricity and personality in music, it helps the music feel alive. There's nothing more soulless than a basic barebones pop track with a standard structure that pushes no boundaries whatsoever. Personality doesn't automatically make a track good, see Jessie J and Gaga's more tryhard moments, but it will help most of the time. Anything that's risky and has some semblance of being good will often be something I fall in love with far more than something just retreading what has been done before. Most of my music taste is based off finding the artists that interest me the most, have the right style to their music, who can draw me in with some leftfield, off-the-wall moments and then fall in love with all the rest of their more 'normal' stuff, assuming they have it.
November 16, 201311 yr Guys, the topic uses Gaga and Katy as examples for the sound it's on about. Whether you prefer Katy or Gaga isn't what he's asking. I would say I'm a Lady Gaga, I suppose. I like safe pop a lot (as long as it's not so safe that it sounds terribly focused on selling), but more interesting stuff is what will come to mind when I think "what were my highlights of the year?". Really as long as a song doesn't feel like it's deliberately trying to be safe or trying to be weird, I don't mind, though.
November 16, 201311 yr I'm definitely a Katy. I basically have to echo everything Jonjo said.. that's how I feel too
November 17, 201311 yr Im not a huge fan of either but i would have prefered Gaga based on first album material, but Katy on second. So far based on third albums i would still be with Katy.
November 17, 201311 yr Katy Perry is definately the better of the two but I do like some of Gaga's songs...
November 17, 201311 yr The topic isn't discussing whether you prefer the artist's songs or them as individuals but rather do you classify yourself as someone who adores the simple and yet basic pop songs or branch out to more daring pop material instead. I'd definitely be more of a Katy Perry and as well as liking quirky and unique pop songs but overall a simple pop song with hooks, even though basic, wouldn't destroy my affection for them in any level whatsoever and my preference would be given to them instead.
November 17, 201311 yr A "Gaga" person by far. Katy Perry's music doesn't excite me in the way that Gaga's music does.
