Posted December 4, 201311 yr The artists featured for this years 2 TOTP specials have been announced. http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/tv/news/a53580...e-specials.html Looking forward to seeing both shows.
December 4, 201311 yr Heard Fearne talking about these on her radio 1 show was gonna post a topic myself about them :)
December 4, 201311 yr That's a surprisingly dance-heavy lineup for Christmas Day! Wasn't long ago that 2011's special mostly ignored the genre completely, but I like the idea of grannies listening to the likes of Chase & Status, Naughty Boy and Rudimental and wondering what the hell is going on :P God knows why Boyzone are on there, probably just making up the numbers, and the New Year one I think I'll give a miss. Still a completely false indication of the actual big hits of 2013 - La La La will be the only one in the YTD top ten represented on the show - but should at least feature some strong sellers. Just a pity that the likes of Daft Punk/Robin Thicke/Avicii etc won't go anywhere near it.
December 4, 201311 yr A very UK-centric line-up as usual, aside from OneRepublic and technically Boyzone. I presume they have difficulty convincing the major worldwide stars to bother with it. Lots of great acts there though, Ellie, John Newman, Chase And Status, Rudimental, Naughty Boy (with that song at least), The 1975, Tinie and especially London Grammar! I hope their performance gives them a boost in the chart (although their album has already done brilliantly really).

Naughty Boy and Rudimental have both been playlisted on Radio 2 and/or Heart FM, so I think they're not too bad for that audience. Chase & Status less so, although Count On Me is at least nowhere near as "heavy" as most of the stuff on their first album. Edited December 4, 201311 yr by Eric_Blob
December 4, 201311 yr Surprised there's no Arctic Monkeys there - the biggest selling rock album (and single, I'm guessing) of the year and they still get playlisted on Radio 1, seems like they would be a good fit. Yay for London Grammar though, and a bit miffed by Boyzone's inclusion - perhaps one of the major labels said they couldn't have their artist unless they took Boyzone as well?

Arctic Monkeys refused to do TOTP back in 2006, so they probably wouldn't do it now either. Looks like a fairly decent line-up though with some omissions. I expect some of the other monster hits will be featured by showing them play at Radio 1's Big Weekend or something.
December 6, 201311 yr So happy to hear the shows are going ahead again this xmas, as this is the first I've read about them anywhere so I had been starting to think they weren't. Arctic Monkeys refused to do TOTP back in 2006, so they probably wouldn't do it now either. On the other hand they did say somewhere that that stance was probably wrong in hindsight, and they did allow one of their tracks to go on a NOW album for the first time this year, so maybe they might've...
December 6, 201311 yr For many it's simply a lack of point. The hits have been and gone, they've made all the sales they can and to travel all the way to wherever in the UK it's filmed to do a mimed performance seems a bit of a waste of time. The Arctic Monkeys (who just about date from the weekly programme's run, if just barely) were probably just evoking the spirit of all the punk acts who refused the show in the late 70s, not that it really mattered by then given only about four people watched it.
December 7, 201311 yr That was basically just The Clash who refused to do it, wasn't it? The likes of the Stranglers and the Boomtown Rats were regular participants.
December 7, 201311 yr About time it was axed totally. Or can we have a decent presenter, instead of Bottom Cotton? Think it should be introduced by Graham Norton, Stephen Mulherne or Steve Jones. Anyone but cliquey Cotton & her other BBC mates.
December 8, 201311 yr I would say let Rufus Hound come back to it. He genuinely loved the show and has said so in interviews since, and his style sort of combined that of the Radio 1 DJs of old with that of the trendy new presenters of later years, so I think he would be popular with most people tuning in.

Yes he wasn't too bad, i would welcome him back in the future.
December 9, 201311 yr That was basically just The Clash who refused to do it, wasn't it? The likes of the Stranglers and the Boomtown Rats were regular participants. Googling you're right, was probably thinking about other non-punk acts from later years. The Prodigy never appeared on it either. I feel like when they do stop making the Christmas TOTP it will be without any media announcement whatsoever, and we'll only know when it doesn't appear on the schedule. The 2008 almost-axe was probably the BBC seeing if there was any interest in the show, and when the inevitable furore occurred they re-instated it.
December 9, 201311 yr In the case of Prodigy I think TOTP actually wouldn't have asked them to appear, because the one time they showed about 30 seconds of a video of theirs there were loads of complaints from parents that Keith looked too scary for the child viewers (I remember this being mentioned in the TOTP magazine at the time). I don't think the Sex Pistols ever appeared, but not sure if that was in effect a mutual decision by both parties.

Muse appeared on the programme but made a habit of swapping roles (e.g. Matt Bellamy on drums) just to make it totally obvious that they were miming. There were complaints when Sparks first appeared because of Ron Mael's scary look
