Urgh at Ketbull (apt cos it's Ke$ha ) looking to be #1. I'd have preferred Ke$ha to just re-release 'Die Young' since that was an actual good song whereas 'Timber' is just bad. Oh well, it seems like a tradition these days beginning the year with a turd of a collaboration - yes 'Scream & Shout' that was directed at you. -_-

Wonder if the showing of Pharrell Happy at the end if totps will help it catch a timber quicker?
Die Young was successful, though.
Most people are back at work tomorrow, we might just get an update on Friday, fingers cross.
Happy has almost caught Timber on iTunes now. Was not expecting that. Looks like 1 week for Timber then at most
What we need is another version of 2000. Most entertaining chart year ever.

Oh yes, unforgettable!!!

I miss those days when there were so many songs charting high and quickly making room for other tracks.

Now with gift cards and other download-related mess we're exposed to nearly a year-old hugely overplayed crap in the current chart which is why I practically stopped listening to it on the radio. I hope 2014 will have a bigger turnover at #1 with big subsequent falls, the chart needs to get more exciting and unpredictable again. I remember those times when everyone was predicting which number a certain song would enter, the whole anticipation of whether it would smash or flop, wonderful. Obviously in 95% of the cases that would be its peak so a pre-release tension was immense.

And now we're launching the new year with this god-awful Pitbull dance/country song that everyone knows will be big.

Even though I hate Pharrell's "Happy" as well, I hope it will prevent "Timber" from grabbing the top spot. It will stay forever in the chart anyway… :(

I'd say there was less turnover with weekly #1s this year than some, lots of songs had a few weeks at #1.

I'd give anything for it not to become as stale and stagnant as 2008 was, now THAT was boring.

Stale? No song stayed at number 1 for more than 5 weeks. Twenty number 1s. That was standard for many decades.

2000 was quite brilliant, 44 number ones or something wasn't it?

Why does more number 1s make a better year?

Gary Barlow's album is number 28 on Itunes - he was on 70 at the New Year - goes to show how strong supermarket sales are.

Also, it's the first time I've seen him on Amazon number 1.

Looks like he's going to number one on Sunday! Who knows? He might even be there for several weeks!

He's likely to go #1 on Sunday (still think Beyoncé is a strong contender too) but I doubt he'll have several weeks there. For starters, Bruce Springsteen's album is out on the 13th and he's pretty much guaranteed one week at #1 and I think he'll manage a second week.

Now the itunes chart is with us, the days of an unpredictable chart countdown are long gone. We pretty much know what the Number One record will be the previous Sunday.
I really hope Gary will be Number One this week, although it's a bit of a dull album

More exciting certainly thanks to dynamism and unpredictability.

Die Young was successful, though.

Yeah, but other successful songs have been re-released before (most recently Gold Dust by DJ Fresh was released twice and successful both times).

I agree to an extent but we have had a few weeks where the iTunes number one has changed during the week like when Martin Garrix and Lily Allen and Ellie Goulding all had days at the top which adds an element of will they won't they but mostly my issue with the chart is that its become very stale and the same artists chart while newer acts struggle that and the ridiculous long chart runs too

Though I've just seen Pharrell is back at number one, I hope he can prevent Pitbull though I doubt it

I agree with you. We still have unpredictable weeks every now and then (although I don't think the example you gave was the best, maybe it was just me, but I was still very confident Animals would be #1 that week).

True, luckily people purchase also in other outlets than iTunes so there's still at least some potential for small surprises.

I wonder if Idina Menzel and "Let it go" has a chance of reaching the top 40 this week. Although not a fan of this type of music it would still be nice to see a famous Broadway musical actress get a UK hit as it is quite unusual for that type of genre to chart.
