January 3, 201412 yr Well we'll see, but physicals will be a big factor and if Gary can continue to remain at the top of the Amazon chart + the HMV discount helping out over the weekend who knows 5k is a pretty big lead when sales are (presumably) as low as they are this week.
January 3, 201412 yr I thought 'Little Me' would be easily top 15 based on its iTunes performance all week, I guess it's all the other combined entries pushing it down? I guess that's the only explanation, I'm sure it's been Top 20 on iTunes for most of the week? At #12 currently though so if it maintains that position or climbs before Sunday, there's still a chance it could scrape into the Top 15. Really deserves it!
January 3, 201412 yr I forget how many decent albums climb in early January, sales won't be bad either so it should push the likes of Haim, Kings of Leon and The 1975 on from scraping Gold towards Platinum (eventually). KoL will have a couple more singles coming up, I'm assuming The 1975 will be releasing "Heart Out" or "Settle Down" soon but I've heard nothing of a new single from 'Days Are Gone'. Hopefully "If I Could Change Your Mind" but they might just piss around with a re-release of "Forever". Hopefully kings of Leon release Family Tree next, fantastic song!!

Also in 1977 a two year old Elvis album made number 1 following his death. 'Songbird' by Eva Cassidy topped the chart almost three years after it was originally released. However none of the albums were on the chart for all of that period of time so the climbs to number 1 weren't slower in the sense that the albums were on the chart for a long period prior to reaching number 1. But the David Gray album reached number 1 on its 66th consecutive week on the chart while it will be the 65th consecutive week on the chart for Ellie Goulding. January 3, 201412 yr 5k is a pretty big lead when sales are (presumably) as low as they are this week. Theyll be low in comparison to last week and the 6 weeks up to xmas but it usually take 2/3 weeks for the gift cards & low priced album effect to wear off after xmas!

January 3, 201412 yr Oh wow, never even considered Ellie being a #1 possibility this week - and with a 5k lead I think she pretty much has it in the bag! I thought her chance had passed after the re-release failed to get it to #1, so glad to be wrong though :D I'm sure there have been plenty of examples of albums taking a while to climb to #1 and then their follow-ups debuting at #1, but it can't often happen the other way round :lol: Incidentally this will now mean that all studio albums by BRITs Critics' Choice winners will be UK #1s with the exception of Jessie J's 2 :D I think I mentioned this around the time 'Halcyon Days' came out but it's relevant again now. Loving so many of those big climbers in the album chart too - Bastille top 5, John Newman, Arctic Monkeys and Rudimental top 10, London Grammar, HAIM, Calvin Harris, Lorde and The 1975 top 20, Kings Of Leon, Mumford & Sons and Daft Punk top 30 and Disclosure and Tinie Tempah top 40 :wub: Great to see 'Love Me Again' and 'Pompeii' climbing again into the top 30 and 'Get Lucky' back in the top 40 on the singles chart! (And also 'Alive'). Good debut positions for Matrix & Futurebound and Fuse ODG, hopefully both can climb more by Sunday now they're both in the top 10 on iTunes.

January 3, 201412 yr How long did James Blunts first album take to reach no1 in 2005?Not too long. It first charted at number 138 on 19/03/05 and made the top 75 the following week. After dropping out and re-entering the top 75 a couple of times it began to climb the chart and reached number 1 on 16/07/05. Not bad for an album that I can remember being in the bargain bin of my local Play store in December 2004 when it looked like the album had flopped. It was being sold for something like £2.50. I nearly bought it but in the end went for another album in the bargain bin, 'Faded Seaside Glamour" by the Delays, instead. I think I definitely bought the better album... If he can't get to number 1 after that then he'll never have a better chance again (solo I mean).
January 3, 201412 yr What a fantastic chart update - would be testament to this era for Ellie Goulding to claim another #1 album; the singles from this era have all been incredible. Pleased to see Daft Punk re-entering the T40, shame it didn't last week; but I guess the Christmas songs were still getting in the ways of things.
