January 8, 201411 yr POTP doesn't show that sort of logic when playing their charts - it's more likely they will play w/e 9 Jan 82.
January 8, 201411 yr The problem with POTP is that it's too selective in the songs it plays. I understand they can't play Gary Glitter, Judge Dread etc but they rarely play any heavy metal or punk, probably because Tony hated them. They play fallers in the Top 20 sometimes at the expense of new entries and climbers. IMO ALL those should be played, and the whole top 5, regardless of the song's genre. Despite these criticisms I still listen most weeks, either live or on I-Player. Atlantic 2ng does a good Retro chart every Sunday at 2pm, repeated Thursdays at 5pm. It's a rota of 6 weeks so last week was 1986 and that year will be on again in 5 weeks' time. They play everything, even Gary Glitter. :o Paul Burnett does a retro Top 40 show on The Wireless, just one year, between 4 & 6 pm Sundays and alternates between a 60's and 70's year. Usually all the top 20 and as many as he can fit in from 21 to 40. Another one is on Bay FM online, from 8-10 pm Tuesdays. Edited January 9, 201411 yr by Common Sense

Which is a shame as I love alot of the 90's music..
January 10, 201411 yr It's not that they can't play certain artists, it's that they choose not too. Also consider this: The show is made by an Independant Production company (Unique Broadcasting). Now they are a team of ex-Capital Radio Producers. Considering you pay a Licence to listen to Radio 2, I don't think it correct that an Independant team, should be producing a BBC Radio show. They have enough producers at Radio 2, to make their own show. Plus they also have their own archives. An enormous place, but rather than use that, Phillip "swillbag" Swern uses some old books. Namely the Guiness Top 40 book Tony Jasper's Top 20 book & the NME 40 Years Of Charts book. A BBC show? No way, it could easily be going out on the awful Gold Network. Terrible show. Plus you'll never get much variety on that show, coz Blackbutt is a "Soul" man & forget late 80s & early 90s house, 70s Punk & Rock. Blackbutt & Swern hate both. And do remember the show is on Radio 2. So, variety must stop at Eurovision. And yep it will be Tuesday 5th January 1982, not Tuesday 12th & you will get the made up, nonsensical NME Chart for 1958 & not the proper BBC chart. Listen to the Classic Retro Countdown instead. We play every record that ever made the charts from 1959 to 1986 & all the original charts that you heard on the original POTP & TOTPs. Edited January 10, 201411 yr by davetaylor

January 11, 201411 yr Wrong 1958 chart. It is 11th Jan & not 4th...Perhaps they didn't want to admit that the real #1, was "Ma, He's Making Eyes At Me". Rubbish NME shite. Record Mirror covered the most shops in 1958. Plus "Ma" was #1 in most published charts.
