Single & Album Summary

Pitbull and Ke$ha seem to heading for a second week at #1 with 'Timber' whilst Hardwell and Mike Hough are looking to debut in the Top 40. Expect last week's two new entries Fuse ODG and Matrix & Futurebound to make a climb into the Top 10, with the possibility of Gaga's 'Do What U Want' joining them, thanks to the new remix with Xtina!

Another dead week in the albums which means Beyoncé could finally climb to #1 with her self-titled fifth album. Heavy discounts are still going so anyone from John Newman to Avicii or from Ellie Goulding to Rudimental could pose as contenders.

Midweek Charts: Pharrell moves back ahead of Pitbull

Source: MW

by Paul Williams

Pharrell Williams could be returning to the top of the UK singles chart this weekend after opening up a narrow lead over Pitbull.

His track Happy was just under 1,000 sales ahead of fellow RCA release Timber by Pitbull featuring Kesha by the end of Tuesday, according to the Official Charts Company, with Positiva/PRMD act Avicii's Hey Brother holding at No 3.

Williams was replaced at No 1 last weekend by Pitbull who opened the chart year by debuting at the top with 138,891 sales, while Happy sold another 108,317 copies last week to take its cumulative UK total above 300,000 sales.

In the new week so far Jason Derulo's Warner Bros single Trumpets holds at 4 as Fuse ODG races into the Top 10 with a 14-5 rise for Million Pound Girl (Badder Than Bad), while fellow 3 Beat/AATW release Control by Matrix and Futurebound featuring Max Marshall progresses 18-8.

Also looking to climb into the Top 10 is Interscope/Polydor act Lady Gaga's Do What U Want, which in the week to date is up from 23 to 9, where it previously peaked last autumn. Then sales were down to a version pairing Gaga with R Kelly, but the track has partially been revived in 2014 by a new remix featuring Christina Aguilera.

Elsewhere in the Top 10 Polydor act Ellie Goulding's How Long Will I Love You is down 5-6, the Interscope/Polydor-issued The Monster by Eminem featuring Rihanna drops 6-7 and Positiva/Virgin track Animals by Martin Garrix dips 8-10.

Williams and Pitbull head what is a very quiet week for the singles market with only one brand new track among the Top 40 sellers - the Relentless-issued Dare You by Hardwell featuring Matthew Koma - while on artist albums the only Top 40 arrival comes from Epic act Kid Ink's My Own Lane at No 30.

After reaching No 1 for the first time last Sunday, Polydor act Ellie Goulding's Halycon is bidding to spend a second week in charge of the artist albums chart, although at present is fewer than a thousand sales in front. It faces a new closest rival in Beyonce's RCA-handled self-titled album, which climbs 3-2 as Polydor artist Gary Barlow drops 2-3 with Since I Saw You Last. Island act John Newman's Tribute moves up 5-4 as Virgin's Bastille gain a place to 5 with Bad Blood and Asylum/Atlantic's Rudimental lift a notch to 6 with Home.

Island act Robbie Williams' Swing Both Ways drops 4-8, Arctic Monkeys' fifth Domino set AM is down 8-9 and Polydor's Haim look to return to the Top 10 with a midweek cimb of 13-10 for Days Are Gone. Just a few hundred sales behind them are London Grammar's Metal & Dust Recordings debut If You Wait, which holds at 11.

Midweek Charts update: Happy Pharrell targetting chart-topping return

Source: MW

by Paul Williams

Pharrell Williams looks likely to take the No 1 UK singles chart spot back off Pitbull this weekend as Ellie Goulding aims to continue to lead albums.

Williams' Happy was replaced at No 1 by fellow RCA-handled Timber by Pitbull featuring Kesha last weekend and at the beginning of this week it appeared Timber would triumph again as it initially led the Official Charts Company's midweek sales. However, since then the Nerd and Neptunes man has moved back ahead and has now increased his lead going into the weekend.

Postiva/PRMD act Avicii's Hey Brother and Warner Bros signing Jason Derulo's Trumpets hold at 3 and 4 respectively on the latest Sales Flashes, while 3 Beat/AATW's Fuse ODG climbs 14-5 with Million Pound Girl (Badder Than Bad).

On artist albums the final chart outcome is far more in the balance with Polydor act Ellie Goulding's Halycon ahead after reaching No 1 for the first time last Sunday. Its lead, though is only around 1,500 units as Beyonce's self-titled Sony album climbs 3-2. It swaps places with Gary Barlow's Polydor set Since I Saw You Last, which drops to 3, as Island act John Newman's Tribute lifts 5-4 and Bastille's Virgin debut Bad Blood is up 6-5.

Haim, meanwhile, are aiming to make a Top 10 return with their Polydor set Days Are Gone lifting 13-10 in the week so far.

'Finally' doesn't seem too appropriate a word to use re: Beyoncé considering this climb to #1 would be 13 times quicker than the last #1 album

True! :P Turns out I didn't even mention Ellie Goulding as a contender last week! :drama:

A nice little dickie bird flew in :D

Top 5 singles the same as last week with the exception of Fuse ODG at #5. Pitbull on sales of 27,2k with Pharrell 900 copies behind. Lady Gaga up 14 places, Beyonce up 14 places, with the highest new entry for Hardwell at #27.

Ellie still #1 on sales of 6,5k Beyonce is just 600 copies behind, the reminder of the top 5 is occupied in the following order, Gary Barlow, John Newman, Rudimental

Pharell is going back to #01 isnt he?! :(

Please tell me what the fuss with the song is, its just repeating "COS IM HAPPY" a million times in a monotone voice. How on earth does that equate to a good song? I usually try and see the appeal in most songs but I do not see a redeeming feature in Happy at all.

Me neither. I find it a complete snoozefest. I guess the reason the song is doing so well is helped off the back of Pharells success with Blurred Lines & Get Lucky.

Please hold on Timber. Can't be doing with these weekly turnovers starting the new year.

I agree with you two, Timber to hold on for second week because a) it's the better song and b) I don't like a weekly turnaround of #1s
Same here i dont like Timber but my chart geekiness means i hate the weekly turnover!
Hope Beyoncé can get the #1! Now that Ellie's had her week I really don't care what happens to the album from here.
Ah man, was counting on a second week for "Timber" and a second week for Ellie Goulding, but ah well. Guess Beyonce hitting #1 reflects how the era and delivery have been executed well this far.

Decent sales for Pitbull, looks like he should do at the very least another 80k this week (as will Pharrell, looks like a very close battle between them this week as there's been very little between them since last Tuesday or so, Pharrell has just gone back to #1 on iTunes but he did that briefly last week as well before Pitbull knocked him straight back off).

Fairly unpredictable album chart as well though I also think Beyoncé will have it by the end of the week. Fact fans: this would be the first time since 2010 that 2 consecutive (new) #1 albums climbed to the top (Alicia Keys 'The Element Of Freedom' followed by Glee Cast 'Glee: The Music, Vol. 1' being the last occurrence and even that was only because the Glee album charted on imports). Only 9 of the entire decade's new #1 albums have not debuted there - Florence + The Machine's 'Lungs', 'The Element Of Freedom', 'Glee: The Music, Vol. 1', Phil Collins' 'Going Back', Rihanna's 'Loud', Michael Bublé's 'Christmas', Military Wives' 'In My Dreams', the 'Les Misérables' soundtrack and 'Halcyon'.

Mind you we did have acts last year, that held well during the week, 900 copies could easily stretch a bit. Its too early to tell with today's update, we should get a better picture by Thursday.

Quote of this ?

I agree with above that Happy is such a non-song. Very monotone, indeed. Timber kind of drives me nuts but it's a more of a well-made piece of catchy music than Happy.

Timber is a bit of a weekend song though and I can see it overtaking Happy again on Friday and selling more on Friday-Saturday.

I don't mind 'Happy' but I do not really see what about it makes it a hit aside from the name Pharrell.
