Midweek Charts update: Happy Pharrell surpasses 500,000 sales

Source: MW

by Paul Williams

Pharrell Williams' Happy has broken through half a million UK sales as it heads for a third week at No 1.

The track has already this week sold another 80,000 copies and by the end of business on Thursday was already 30,000 sales ahead of its nearest rival, fellow RCA-handled Timber by Pitbull featuring Kesha. That takes its cumulative tally above 500,000 units and will secure it a third non-consecutive week leading the UK singles chart this Sunday.

Williams' success with Happy follows him being part of two million-selling singles in the UK last year, co-wrting and featuring on both Interscope/Polydor act Robin Thicke's Blurred Lines and Columbia-signed Daft Punk's Get Lucky. These were the two most successful singles of the year.

In the chart so far this week Pitbull holds at 2, having the week before dislodged Happy from the No 1 spot for seven days, while also static are Postiva/PRMD's Avicii with Hey Brother and Warner Bros act Jason Derulo with Trumpets at 3 and 4 respectively. As well as having the week's top two singles, RCA is also responsible for what are currently two brand new entries in the Top 10 with Elyar Fox's debut Do It All Over Again arriving at 5 and Can't Remember To Forget You by Shakira featuring Rihanna at No 10.

Bruce Springsteen will score an easy victory on the artist albums chart this weekend with his Columbia-issued High Hopes having more than double the sales of Polydor act Ellie Goulding's Halycon at No 2. High Hopes will become Springsteen's 10th UK album chart-topper in all.

As Goulding drops a place to 2, Beyonce is down a notch to 3 with her self-titled RCA-handled album as Virgin act Bastille rise 5-4 with Bad Blood. Gary Barlow's Polydor set Since I Saw You Last drops 3-5.

Nice climb for Riptide and Shakira looking to repeat what Beautiful Liar did 7 years back. Although I don't think it will complete the pattern of jumping to 3 then 1

I hope it outpeaks She Wolf eventually.

It certainly doesn't deserve to.

Really want Sub Focus to get top 10 this week, even so #11 is a very good result for it.

Not unless Freemasons step in. She Wolf is pop gold.

What's the possibility of Pharrell selling 1million again with Happy?? I'll say 95% now

Good chance hes over 500k today there and still increasing in sales but itll prob be over 2 different yrs cant see it selling a million this yr just!

I hope Gary Barlow stays top 5 now and can manage 15,000+ sales, i look forward to this reaching double platinum soon. Overall it is a fairly boring week in both charts.

Ofcourse he's getting it this year. I can guarantee on it.

Selling its 1 millionth copy this year, very likely.

Selling 1 million copies during 2014, a lot less likely.

My point was not Year End sales, just total sales of Happy will cross 1million
I can see him crossing a million with 2014 sales quite easily tbh.
Pharrel set to get a 3rd million seller
