Throwing money at something is not always going to solve problems, making better use of existing money is just as important

I know it is not in Gove's plans but the whole system needs changing to adapt to the modern world, less teaching on rubbish like kings and queens and more on things like creating cv's, covering letters, financial management, budgeting, web design, things that are going to help in real life

Its barmy that a kid can leave school knowing how many wives Henry 8th had but not how to manage a budget/look after money/write a legible cv and covering letter/give a powerpoint presentation

What crap. So we should take time away from teaching the cultural literacy that helps kids to get those impressive things on their CV in the first place? That's pretty much as bad as the 'we shouldn't teach kids information because Google's already there, we should teach them how to learn!' school of thought - nice at first sight but ultimately self-defeating as these things come pretty naturally.

Oh, and I challenge you to find many 16 year olds incapable of doing a PowerPoint presentation.

(I agree on the whole budget management thing though. I'd have it as part of PSHE being expanded in the curriculum to also feature more on political and relationship education.)

*unperceptive point*

If I left school with ANY skill it would have been giving a PowerPoint presentation  As an A Level student currently who's just done GCSEs, I've lost count of the amount of the things I've done from about year 10 to now. Maybe I just chose the right subjects I don't know, but we also have PDC which is basically preparing us for later life through the use of uni visits, mock job interviews and visits from speakers on financing, gap years and everything else, they helped us last year with CVs as well.

What the hell is a Powerpoint Presentation? :D Bet most of the population, like me, have no idea!!
Let's face it, anyone who's worked for any length of time will know that poor use of English doesn't really hold you back. I'm often appalled when reading things that have been written by people earning 3+ times what I do.

This is so true. In my job I get lots of letters and emails from Solicitors and such - and their communications are just ridiculously bad. They're littered with bad spelling and bad grammar - it obviously hasn't held them back from earning a hell of a lot more than me though (I'm just a humble secretary - what would I know?)

On the plus side - if I was up against them in a TV quiz - I'd wipe the floor with them - they'd never get past question number 1.

I'd rather have the high salary though - whatever it takes!

Back to Gove and what I heard on the news this morning - nursery and pre-school places for as young as two or even one! I don't know why he doesn't go the whole hog and suggest all children be taken off their mothers at birth - put into dormitories along with hundreds of other babes and be brought up en-masse with one single thought in mind. Actually - I'm not sure if I read of something similar in a history lesson or whether I'm thinking of a Star Trek TNG Borg episode!

People don't have to apply through the government website for it to count as an application.

Yeah true but with UJM it has cv stored and all you have to do is press a button to apply, 10 seconds

Our procedure takes a lot more effort so a workshy person just keeping job centre happy would have far easier ways of applying for stuff

If it means that much to you am happy to do that, minus my current job of course as would not want any Buzzjackers who hate me tapping up my boss ;) i will upload it tomorrow, along with a covering letter to a ficticious job

Ça s'est pas passé

Was very busy yesterday, tonight or max of tomorrow night :)

Taps fingers and waits ... :smoke:

Sorry, been ultra busy, 14 hour work yesterday and 11 the previous day, I will try get the CV uploaded tonight if I can work out how to do it

Covering letter will have to wait till Sunday, not had time to start on it

Excuses, excuses. You've gone past a deadline which you set yourself. No matter how great your CV is ... you're fired!

Procrastination is the thief of time!!!

Things crop up at short notice cant be helped :P

I was only meant to be doing 8hrs yesterday but a data centre issue turned it into 14 and a shitload of transatlantic phone calls, nature of the beast sadly

Using the 'You're Fired' analogy I bet Lord Sugar thousands of times has had stuff crop up at short notice :P

I don't believe all this 'high-powered' stuff for a minute! I think you actually work the night-shift at Dominoes! The reason you've not been able to meet your 'CV deadline' is because you've been taken by surprise by an unusually high order for stuffed-crust pizzas!

If I worked for Dominoes I would be sacked within a night for eating most of the stock :P

I'll be out of my job at the end of the month - and I must admit - I actually fancy working at our local Dominoes! I think my age would go against me though - they're all lively young things working there!

Failing to prepare is preparing to fail. Unfortunately we've already offered the job to somebody else who was BETTER AT MANAGING THEIR TIME EFFICIENTLY.

Bye.
