Scouting For Girls - This Ain't A Love Song stands out as one that wouldn't go anywhere near #1 now even though it was only released 4 years ago.

It's Chico Time is another one. Joke XF acts don't do well in the charts these days, the last one I remember having a chart hit was Jedward.

I don't think Scouting For Girls were any less out of place as a Number One at the time than they would be now. Obviously as an act they're a bit less popular these days but you could say that about almost any act and I presume the thread is supposed to be a bit more specific than that.

The only reason Baz Luhrmann would be less likely to get there now is that it was held back for so long that somebody would have done a fake version of it.

Scouting For Girls was an extremely out of place #1 - their chart positions with subsequent singles are much more what was expected of their comeback and it's not like 'This Ain't A Love Song' was anything massively different (very much the opposite in fact). If they were going to get a #1 with that sound it would only really make sense if it was with one of their first album's singles when the sound wasn't tired yet.

Also I think 'Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen)' would probably be a BIGGER hit now than it was at the time.

Enigma - Sadeness Pt I

I agree, sadly it's this and things like Enya's Orinoco Flow that are the ones that immediately spring to mind.

I agree with MCR, also Razorlight's America & Kaiser Chiefs Ruby. That genre's pretty alien to the upper end of the singles charts these days and sales are far higher.

I think all records that were based on a TV show/novelty/campaign would all get to number 1 these days, if the circumstances behind it were the same rather than back then. They were 'fad' number 1s rather than a dated style.

It seems to me that it would be easier to pick out number 1s from the past that would STILL be a hit now rather than vice versa.

Agreed. Many 70's and 80's No.1's wouldn't be hits now.

The cheesy duets such as Love Can Build a Bridge (1995) and Ebony and Ivory (1982) would be totally laughed at.

Imagine Olly Murs and Bruno Mars dueting the latter, eww

Ciara- Goodies

Ja Rule ft R Kelly & Ashanti- Wonderful

Nelly- My Place/ Flap Your Wings

Any of them could return to the top if an artist were to die.

Perhaps with the exception of the likes of Mr Blooby.

There could even be a Facebook campaign to stop the X-Factor number one with any of them, except of course an X-Factor number one.

Funnily enough, both Sadeness and Orinoco Flow were the two songs that immediately sprung to mind. I really want to know what exactly happened in the late 80s/90s to allow those two songs to become monster hits.

I have the Goodies cd single packed for my dj set tomorrow so I don't believe you :P

Will it be the song you play when you want everyone to clear off because it's home time? :P

Or, for very different reasons : Gary Glitter - I Love You Love Me Love... :P

hahahaha

Enigma didn't have to sell many during the fallow period of January 1991 - this is the same month that Iron Maiden, Queen and KLF hit number one with relatively few sales. Enya - it was just popular. Everyone loved that when it came out.

Songs that wouldn't get to number 1 now? Anything by B*Witched.

Tomcraft - Lonliness

Due to the fact Dance music is massive at the moment, I think this would be massive if it was released now, probably even have a better chart run then it originally did too.

I actually could definitely see this being #1 today, and even being a bigger hit than it was in 2003.

19-9-10-{7}-9-9-10-12-18-23-27- Shes so Lovely

64-40-27-19-14-{10}-10-13-20-17-25-35-35-38- Heartbeat

Thats the chart runs for 2 of the Scouting for Girls single from the first album - it was 2007 so it was probabaly a climber whereas the 2010 no1 was held back and a follow up to the massive first album so it entered at no1!
