Such a f***ing mess, but that's South Africa for you. He even had his own TV channel here for the trial, and several books written about the trial all to which he will probably get a nice chunk of the profits

I'm inclined to believe it wasn't premeditated murder and indeed a case of grave misjudgment/negligence/paranoia-fuelled stupidity. That said, he deserves to do jail time for it and it's a relief that he will be, given that that was in question. Five years is quite lenient though.

He's only spending 10 months of the five years in an actual jail tho, premeditated or not, that's still absurd imo

Wow words fail me, even more so that the brunt of the sentence is for the gun charges!

The gun sentence was 3yrs suspended and then the Non-Murder charge was 5yrs actual prison time.

No doubt after he's being released from jail. He'll appear on a TV interview or books written about it.

Isn't he being held in the hospital ward?

It's outrageous. Just a 6th of the sentence. In this case 5 years should mean at least 4 years in jail.

He may yet serve more than ten months. That is just the first point at which he can apply for release although he would then have his movements heavily restricted. I have no idea what proportion of prisoners serve as little as one sixth of the original sentence.

I guessed this morning that he would get five years but that was before I knew he would be able to apply for release so soon.

Crazy, I guess logic prevailed in the end. 15 Years minimum.

I still don't think it was murder. That requires premeditation and nothing I have seen proves that to be the case.

(unless murder doesn't require premeditation/intent to kill in SA).

Murder in this case means he knew his actions would or could kill (whoever was behind the door)

If you can ever be "happy" about something like this I am. The original judge and sentence was a disgrace tbh. She ignored pretty much anything that hurt Pistorius story even though she said he was a terrible witness.

This judge applied the law.

Poor girl.

Agreed. He won't get anywhere 15 years though, which is the maximum sentence. The predictions are for 3-4 years but he could still appeal this ruling first.

I think 15 years in the minimum but they will at least take off the year he has served and his legal team can bring special circumstances or something.

With parole he will probably serve half of whatever the sentence is, which in my mind is still not enough for what he did. I have no doubt he killed her in a temper. His story had more holes than a sieve and was so unbelievable.

Mind you with the original trial judge deciding, she might just decide he's suffered enough and invite him round for coffee.

The correct verdict IMO, though why it took so long to reach this conclusion..

If you disregard who was behind the bathroom door, there can be no doubt that his firing a gun 4 times was a direct intension to kill whoever was behind that door, and is therefore premeditated murder.

So he is going to appeal (some are saying it will be on the basis of an "unfair trial") and has been allowed bail until next April.

That's a convicted murderer out on bail. Yep you heard correctly. Unbelievable.

This could drag for years.

Just take the punishment for what you did for goodness sake.
