April 22, 201411 yr Ultra Nate 'Free' ~ such a feel good anthem! Mousse T 'Horny' ~ cheese KWS 'Please Don't Go' ~ a fake version that got to No1?! Garage is definitely a sub-genre of dance music! ^_^
April 22, 201411 yr Poor Gezza, he did say that we may not agree with all of his decisions on this one... I'm sure the all knowing G* could insert records like Deee-Lite into the final list if we're not all completely vile to him along the way.
April 22, 201411 yr Author 23. TURN AROUND- Phats & Small (487,000) http://i60.tinypic.com/2d1wpvm.jpg YEAR: 1999 PEAK POSITION: 2 Uncredited vocalist here (he actually doesn’t sing but mimes on this video) is a certain Ben Ofoedu who went on to become Mr Vanessa Feltz- bizarrely. Anyway this track sampled “Reach Up” by Toney Lee, and Russell Small (one half of the duo) went on to form the Freemasons with James Wiltshire. hnfmQ1wi8gc
April 22, 201411 yr Author 22. BORN SLIPPY- Underworld (495,000) http://i62.tinypic.com/v6i4b8.jpg YEAR: 1996 PEAK POSITION: 2 Back in 1995 the band released a track called “Born Slippy” which limped in at No 52, on the B-side of that was a track called “Born Slippy Nuxx” which in 1996 was issued as the A-Side and retitled “Born Slippy”- got that? So whilst it looks like they released it twice the songs are entirely different, of course use in the film “Trainspotting” probably aided things along nicely! The title by the way comes from a greyhound the band bet on. XiMrrleH_hI
April 22, 201411 yr Author 21.2 TIMES- Ann Lee (506,000) http://andys-backing-tracks.webs.com/Ann_Lee_2_times.jpg YEAR: 1999 PEAK POSITION: 2 The weekly total of Ann Lee who did just over 150K to enter at No 2 behind Christina Aguilera’s debut “Genie In A Bottle” should certainly have been enough for No 1 in most weeks in most years. She was one of the writers of Corona’s “Rhythm Of The Night” so was no stranger to the runner up spot, though the Sheffield born girl (Annerlee Gordon) had topped the charts throughout most of Europe in 1998 with this track. April 22, 201411 yr "Turn Around" and "Born Slippy" are both magnificent.  That beat on "Born Slippy" still thumps hard! :party2: "2 Times" is a cute song. Happy it was a Euro smash in '99! Edited April 22, 201411 yr by Ne Plus Ultra
April 22, 201411 yr Phats & Small 'Turn Around' ~ funky! <3 Underworld ~ 'Born Slippy Nuxx' ~ monster classic! :dancing:  Ann Lee '2 Times' ~ love it
April 22, 201411 yr Born Slippy is a proper classic  Not so keen on Ann Lee and Phats & Small though
April 22, 201411 yr Ahh Phats & Small - I remember being in school when this was out and everyone was just walking round shouting 'Hey! What's wrong with you?' Great track. Born Slippy is an anthem  Ann Lee - That got annoying after a while didn't it? It probably wouldn't sound too bad now I've not listened to it in years, but at the time it got to a point where you just wanted to rip your ears off whenever you heard it.
April 23, 201411 yr I need to have a listen of quite a lot of songs on here!!! Not a big fan of 'Turn Around', although I take it it's kind of a classic now...
April 23, 201411 yr "2 Times" is just so repetitive and doesn't really go anywhere.. hated it at the time, probably indifferent to it nowadays. "Born Slippy" though is a CHOOON.
April 23, 201411 yr I would have loved that - would have served them right for waiting 6 months to release the bloody track. It was on ZYX records - they used to make a fortune on imports which I think is why they didn't release it in the UK until it was too late. All ZYX 12" records were £5.99 in my local record shop, compared to £2.99 for the regular releases.
April 23, 201411 yr Ha, I see what you mean about 1999 now...guess we still have a lot to come. Although Born Slippy NUXX got played to death, it was fabulous. I remember, just after I saw Trainspotting, spending about half an hour on the listening post in Virgin in Glasgow just listening over and over to the track on the soundtrack album. I got confused by the NUXX thing too - I bought a discount compilation of dance tracks from '95 around that time cos Born Slippy was on it - but it was the original version, of course. Nice, but not as nice. ...and I don't mean to be nasty to Gezza, I hope he can put Deee-Lite into the hundred at the end in an honourary position ;) Edited April 23, 201411 yr by richie
April 23, 201411 yr A Buzzjack of 1992 would have gone absolutely mental with anger over KWS - for an equivalent, imagine if the Remix Junkies had got to number 1 with their version of 'I Love It' here last year only for poor Icona Pop to get completely ignored and miss the top 40! Would have been ridiculous.# Please Don't Go's a nice tune, but KWS really were pretty nasty for doing that. Both were covering the same song? I can't believe they successfully sued! It's more Hazell Dean/Liza Minelli - Love Pains than Cilla Black/Dionne Warick - Anyone who had a heart.
April 23, 201411 yr Haha Richie, you've reminded me how much I miss listening posts in Our PRice (other record shops are/were available) - the equivalent of streaming an album on Spotify before you took the plunge and spent your £15 or whatever. I would also like to thank Gezza for his efforts compiling this countdown, a great list so far! Much appreciated. Edited April 23, 201411 yr by Doctor Blind
April 23, 201411 yr Ha, I see what you mean about 1999 now...guess we still have a lot to come. I went and looked at the Top 40 of 1999 and saw the sales level of the number 40 song was terrified to see that ALL the dance songs that made the 40 are in this chart and quite a few were awful.
April 23, 201411 yr I loved 2 Times  I expected it to enter at #3 or #4 iirc as B*Witched had a comeback single out the same week and Blue (Da Ba Dee) was still riding high. I was shocked to see it come in at #2 and wow at its opening sale! It's pretty forgotten now, never seems to pop up on any dance or 90s compilations...
April 23, 201411 yr Author 20. SUNCHYME- Dario G (513,000) http://i61.tinypic.com/35klb0m.jpg YEAR: 1997 PEAK POSITION: 2 Having the grave misfortune to go head to head with Elton John this was never going to be a No 1 hit. Based extensively around a sample of Dream Academy’s 1985 hit “Life In A Northern Town” it holds the dubious record of being the track on the receiving end of the biggest gap between the top 2 tracks in a week in the chart when it lagged behind Elton by 1,460,000 copies- oh what some more promo might have done!
