Whatever happened to CHIPMUNK

I remember him changing his stage name to 'Chip' (and then he just kinda disappeared without anyone noticing/caring~)

Whatever happened to CHIPMUNK

The last I heard of him was he changed his name to Chip and featured on Wiley's hit single 'Reload'. I can't see him or Tinchy ever making a big comeback though, clearly the days where any UK rapper could get a big hit by doing a pop song with a catchy hook are gone.

A couple of weeks ago he released a video of an acoustic performance which was widely praised around the net

Just watched it... and now am downloading the song :D

Needs to make the top 40!

I just looked up Elyar's twitter to see if there were any signs of panic within Team Fox now that the single is out of the top 10 already :kink:. Turns out he's releasing a folk mix () at midnight and there's already been an acoustic version and a remix released over the last two nights. How cynical of the label to encourage young fans to stay up (as they are off school of course) and buy the same song every night :arrr: - at least have the decency to bundle the different versions in an EP or something.

Whatever sales the single ends up with will be so inflated by multi-buying it's ridiculous.

Downloading this the sec it comes out that's 4 I've bout now !!!

Gahhh :hithead: (mainly at 'bout')

Really hope this misses the top 10 officially. An #11 would be glorious.

Whatever happened to CHIPMUNK

He signed to Hustle Gang (the same label as T.I., B.o.B, Iggy Azalea) but he hasn't released an album yet, just a mixtape I think.

Whatever happened to CHIPMUNK

he "kinda" tried to make it in the US back in 2012 when T.I. announced Chip and Iggy had joined his Hustle Gang crew, then he finally dropped a mixtape (last year?) but idk what happened since then

It amazes me that we've made it a decade into the download era and a flash in the pan top 10 is still important to some artists and record companies. It doesn't exactly highlight success when a song enters at #10 and drops to #40 the following week so what does it achieve exactly?

People used to say that it was easier to market an album that had 'the top ten hits X and Y' on it but it's not as if it's going to make any difference in this album climate where Elyar Fox will be lucky to shift 30,000 albums in total so why do the fanbase buy top ten singles still hold so much significance to the industry?

He's hardly going to lose his fanbase if he debuts at #11 instead of #10. The media won't care either because it's not like he was expected to huge things anyway so it would hardly be a high profile flop. I get the significance of a major artist missing the top ten with a new pre-album single but not somebody like him.

I remember in 2012 they all did a cypher at an award show after they got signed. It was the first time I ever saw Iggy, I was so shocked at how she looked.

All of those different versions coming to save ABG :(

Oh God, that just makes me angry, and I thought that horrible multiple versions release strategy in the first week that the Vamps used was bad :/ That's just such a horribly exploitative method for his fans. I so so hope this charts at #11 this week, but it ain't gonna happen.

i think it comes down to very out of date a&r individuals working with an artist model for the teenager's of the social media generation. how relevant is the chart to the great british public now anyway? aren't viewing figures continually falling? it still totally omits streaming which in a way makes it irrelevant in a massive way. i know this site is one for traditionalist purist types but shouldn't the charts reflect what is most popular with the great british public? i know i've splinted here into several different arguments.

as for elyar fox: i find everything about him utterly offensive to the world of pop music. where is the artistery? where is the talent? who is he supposed to be as an artist? it strikes me his sole purpose is to coax money out of young and naive girls (and gays) willing to buy 7 different versions of a terrible song. i think ultimately it gives you a very short shelf life and i'm glad this release isn't doing particularly impressively for him. evidently the label see little opportunity in the music sales and want to build him as a brand. sadly you have to have some sort of memorable tune to go with it.

you invest nothing you get nothing back. he's a bad project being badly mishandled in a world full of these twennsie social media releases

The extra versions of 'A Billion Girls' are not exactly smashing. Wouldn't worry about them inflating the sales too much.

the label clearly wanted that to happen though. it's pleasing to see his project not work out the way they intended. though what's to be expected when you put no money in, don't expect profit back even from naive young girls.

I think top 10 hits still hold a lot of weight within the industy. They're important for certain types of new artists in terms of distinguishing themselves and proving potential for success on the promotional trail, i.e. booking TV slots, making the line-up of radio concerts as well as introductions in interviews etc. As trivial as it seems, I think there's a big difference between a #10 and an #11 for Elyar because it would definitely hinder his appeal within the industry if he couldn't be sold as an artist who 'has two top 10 hits to his name this year and a loyal, growing fanbase...'etc.

Personally, as unsavoury as it sometimes is, I can live with all the record label manipulation, social media marketing, fan competitions and everything else if it's all in support of a decent song. But 'A Billion Girls' is literally one of the worst attempts at music I've heard in years so that's the main reason I hope it fails to dent the top 10 :P.

iTunes Update

[01] 01| Rudimental (ft. Ella Eyre) - Waiting All Night

258. Rudimental - Waiting All Night (feat. Ella Eyre)

Not doing too badly a year later. Kiesza vs Rudimental who wins?

He seems to be following fans who buy each version of the song so it's definitely gaining a few sales. Even the acoustic version of ABG had a hashtag trending yesterday :puke2:

I think Kiezsa will still be selling a year on tbh. I could see it being top 300 next year, at least at some point. It's a song with very broad appeal.

Gosh Waiting All Night was such an incredible #1!

I don't know why people are worked up about Elyar Fox. He's so irrelevent to my life. I don't care if he goes top 10. I don't think I've ever heard his current single before, and probably never will. Not a big deal.

I don't think there's much wrong with multiple versions tbh. If I were a pop singer, I would do the same (I'd put them all on an EP though, not release one every day ).
