Two shows which may be interesting both with Tony Blackburn.

Friday. 2-5pm: The original versions of songs which became hits or bigger hits when recorded by others.

Easter Monday 2-5pm.: Songs which charted or were much bigger hits when re-issued or re-promoted due to films, adverts etc.

I guess on Monday we'll hear Reet Petite, When A Man Loves a Woman, Stand By Me, amongst others.
meh. definitely tuning into radio 1 but even without the competition I don't think I'd listen to this (and obviously there is no direct competition on the Friday as the countdown is on Monday)

Anyone going to listen to this? First song Darlin' by Beach Boys, later done by David Cassidy.

They were all sizeable hits first time round. On the other hand songs such as Creep, West End Girls and Sultans Of Swing flopped when they were first released and went on to be big hits.

But the Beach Boys version was a bigger hit (and must be a lot more famous now, via their many hits collections). If they had the original Redwood version that might have been interesting but it sounds like an underwhelming start.

I was very surprised that I Will Always Love You by Dolly Parton wasn't played and also Always On My Mind, Willie Nelson. At the beginning he didn't always say who revived the songs either so someone texted in but he said "I am doing that". He didn't say that Kylie did Give Me Just A Little More Time though!

Reet Petite only reached No.6 originally but No.1 in 1986 and Stand By Me only No.27 but No.1 in 1987. They could have played When A Man Loves A Woman yesterday actually as it was a hit later for Michael Bolton and Jody Watley.

I'm not disputing that they were bigger hits second ti,e round. I was merely pointing out that they were not flops whereas the songs I mentioned didn't enter the chart at all when they were first released.

A far more interesting idea for a show would have been to play out "songs you didn't realise were covers".

You could have played the original version of "Torn" by Ednaswap then (and the originals from the entire Birdy back-catalogue for ignorant Birdy fans :P )

Email Phil Swern then as he's Tony's R2 producer.

All three have been played. He said it's songs that were hits earlier but bigger hits second time around.

Which, sadly, rules out some great songs that were not hits at all first time round :( Not that I'm listening anyway
