Posted April 16, 201411 yr Buzzjack Unlucky 13 OK, ive had lots of goodwill, lovely comments and support - but juuuust not getting the votes when it comes down to it. So here’s a useful guide to failure for anyone wanting to know what not do in the Buzzjack Song Contest :) 13 attempts, 12 failures (technically 13 but for the infamous tie with Shivaree, but I’m taking that as a moral victory!) Goodnight Moon - Shivaree A delicious moody gentle female vocal alternative rock track from 2000, that got picked up in 2002 for Kill Bill 2. To date the only Singerpurear entry that has come close to qualifying, and a welcome 12 points from Altyr Muunilinst. 7 voters and 51 points. Cheers! When They Fight They Fight - The Generationals Quirky, catchy and an unusual 60’s low-key production vibe to it, but sooo joyous I felt it would be a cert to qualify. It featured in a TV advert in 2012 so I thought it might even sound familiar. Wrong! A best-ever 9 voters, so well-liked, but nobody loved it enough for the big points. Shorley Wall - Ooberman So wanted this to be loved, a subtle, beautiful, Scouse award-winning late 90’s cult fave. Too subtle apparently, as only 2 lovely voters gave it 4 each. Thanks Terra Avium and Zechonia! When The Love Is Good - Big Trouble My mate hated Ooberman and preferred this when I played it him, all big-haired 80’s cheese poprock from none-other than Giorgio Moroder. The lead singer of the girl group had a fab vocal on this fab song. Thought it might be fun to see how 80’s went down with people not born then. Not that well, actually, though Skall gave it a 12, yay! 6 voters. Luv Bomb - Bowie Jane So, I thought, let’s try current dance chart stuff. Most of them were a bit bland though, this was the only one I picked up as having a Choon. Aussie wanna-be popstar, dayjob lawyer, and so happy girlie pop singalong my niece loved it in a sort of kitsch-but-fab fashion. Truly a marmite record, as only 3 voted for it, but 2 of them were 12’s. I’ve never bettered 2 12’s for a record, so thanks Juranabaijan and Greenfroze! Already Gone - Red Sky July Well, pop failed, so I thought I’d try class, low-key country from an obscure supergroup (of sorts) members from The Alice Band, Alisha’s Attic and Texas. Husband-wife had recently gone through trauma, near-death, long-recovery saga and come out the other end with this touching ballad. 6 voters liked it, but nobody loved it. Red Hands - Walk Off The Earth Youtube sensation with their has-to-be-seen-to-be-appreciated acoustic one-take cover of Gotye, they had a worldwide flop (BOOOOO!) with this marvellous, exciting poprock stormer. I remain bemused why it wasn’t big even in the USA and Canada, from whence it came. 7 of you agreed me with me, and Scruvovnia gave me a full 12. Cheers! Good Dancers - The Sleepy Jackson A 2002 early version of Empire Of The Sun, but more George Harrison than EDM, I hoped this Aussie flop non-hit might excite a few folk. Only Flotjavik was. Thanks! 3 other voters, but at least it beat Ooberman. Pulse - OMD 80’s veterans back a couple of years previously with a stompingly great new album that old fans didn’t get to hear and new music fans didn’t get to hear. Tragic, as it’s chock full of great potential singles like this album track. A persistent rhythmic groaning EDM dance track written for Britney, who insanely chose not to release her version. She really ought to re-consider now she needs a solo hit. I thought it was ideal for BJSC. BJSC disagreed, 7 voters and nobody loved it. The Last Of The Melting Snow - The Leisure Society After dance failed, back to the song, and a gorgeous, low-key harmony, strings-heavy ballad, once again critically-acclaimed a few years back in the media without breaking through to the mainstream. 9 voters agreed with me, hooray! Sadly, not quite enough of the bigger points to cross the line but I was glad to see it so well received. Can’t Stop The Beat - Wally Lopez featuring Jamie Scott A new year and I tried scouring the net for current dance to see if anything caught my attention. This one did, from the Polish dance charts! American singer-songwriter Jamie Scott had already done well for me as Graffiti6 in one of the other contests (the brilliant Annie You Save Me), and was now busy writing songs for One Direction’s latest album and singles. That mattered not a jot, as poor ol Wally n Jamie also fell short of anything like enough points, despite 8 voters and a great hook and production. Ue o Muite Aruko (Sukiyaki) - Kyu Sakamoto Just for change I thought it might be fun to send a 50-year-old track in, as part of a foreign-language themed contest, probably the first international cross-over hit of that type. Kyu had died young, in a plane crash, and I loved this track as a child. I got my answer, though, 3 voters and even less points than Ooberman, 7 points! In My Bed - Ariana & The Rose I found this in the Music Week Coolcuts charts in January but had to wait for the mp3 version to be released, by which time remixes also popped up, one of which pipped me to the post in another BJ contest, where it did very well, top 5. Grounds for optimism, one might think, as the single mix was less in ya face and more of a song and far more subtle. Still EDM and a guaranteed qualifier given how well it had already done? Uh uh. 7 voters and not even close. In conclusion, I feel the brand name Singerpurear has now become so tainted with the whiff of failure that I could enter the next million-selling single by Pharrell (and I very nearly did that last summer when I considered Happy as a contender, ah if only B-) ) and it would bomb! I need to change it to something sexy and EDM-in-ya-facey. Maybe, DNQonia or Norfolknchance  Ah well, by way of thanks to my surprisingly numerous voters (considering flopsville!), here’s a list of all of the semi points received (obviously totally unfair to list as some may well have given loads of points in those semi’s they weren’t drawn in, but it’s a bit of fun) - thanks to all 43 boys n girls so far! Topping the list, it’s a tie! Isconia and Skall are my most loyal supporters, closely followed by Yehesi and Greenfroze. The figures after the positions are where they rank in my finals-only points list, so it’s a mutual love-fest, though Isconia and Greenfroze are a bit lower in my list. Big surprises to me, as I tend to vote after listening then list the countries afterwards, are the countries who have never had finals points from me. Egg on face time and apologies to Seyetana in particular, not to mention Launica, Zechonia, Usfland and Mezidinia, among others, though some have had points in semis and not made it through to the final. Your time will come! Of course it works the other way, and some countries Ive supported a lot have yet to donate points back, which is only fair and right if it’s the song you’re voting for! April 16, 201411 yr AWWW BLESS YOU. i am agog that ariana didn't make it! i thought she was a surefire :o NEXT TIME *PLEASE*.
April 16, 201411 yr Get that hit thread John! I'm sure you'll make it sometime, I've always liked your entries, some of them are actually really great!
April 16, 201411 yr I thought it was bad DNQ'ing in 7 of my first 8 contests  Gotta say it's great how you continue to participate rather than just throw in the towel cause you're not qualifying!
April 16, 201411 yr Author Thanks Jester and Joseph, despite the article, I really don't mind the DNQ's, it's kinda amusing the floppage, and I love so many of the other tracks entered by others I can't complain when they get points - my personal charts are stuffed with Great BJSC tracks
April 16, 201411 yr I am sure that once your DNQ streak ends you will immediately win and break the points record. It just HAS to happen. (By the way, Scruvovnia and Allecian are one and the same so you have given points to Scruvovnia, in the most recent contest! :P Oslol and The People's Republic of Ginsay Lohands are also the same country). I would definitely have given 'Pulse' big points had it been in my semi by the way! Not gonna lie though, most of the others are not much to my taste.
April 16, 201411 yr I'm SO WILLING for you to qualify (even though admittedly, I haven't actually voted for any of your tracks, but that's not cos of any favouritism!), I feel sorry for you that you haven't but I admire the fact you're not changing what you love and just sending it anyway.
April 16, 201411 yr I haven't been a big fan of any of your entries but I do hope you can qualify one day :( Gotta love your persistence tho (I'm so gonna do my own version of this using my 14 DNQs :kink:)
April 16, 201411 yr popchartfreak needs to go URBANSWAGfreak next month. It's the only way, comin fo wigs~ I probably would have long given up by now, but i adore the enthusiasm you always have and the fact that you stick by your guns. One of these days!!13
April 16, 201411 yr Goodnight Moon, Already Gone, Red Hands, Pulse (especially this, so gutted I was in the other semi) and The Last Of The Melting Snow are qualifiers in my mind. I honestly really like your willingness to just send anything no matter its chances of success and those folky, low-key tracks are often very appreciated, especially with so much EDM around these days. I will send something you like eventually ha, I think my tracks of late have mostly been quite rocky/crazy so not much scope for appealing. Still love what you send most of the time, hope you finally make it one day.
April 16, 201411 yr I too have never qualified, 7/7 DNQs but as you say if you enjoy the contest and others' entries it is not the be all and end all. Good luck in the next contest. :) Edited April 16, 201411 yr by Leonardo
April 16, 201411 yr love Singerpurear and their undying enthusiasm for this contest  really hope you can make it through one of these days! to think I found my 3 DNQs in a row last year to be frustrating! D:
April 17, 201411 yr Can't help but think it was slightly my fault for Ariana's fail for taking the spotlight away so apols :( In my first year here, I had two last places and seven DNQ's in a row, it seriously sucked. I probably would've given up by now if I had as many as 13 in a row so you have great persistance as others said, rooting for you even if I don't vote for your songs! Thanks for the info I will correct the charts, all the name changes do confuse me at times! It would be a dull chart world if we all liked the same music, variety is the spice of life and other cliches and nobody should ever has to worry about loving or not loving a record. B-) Made me think I was on the right track if someone else liked it enough to send to a contest, I was sort of reassured in a way it was a goodie, and not really surprising the bouncier mix was more popular. Cheers!
April 17, 201411 yr Author thanks Haus, Robot, Leonardo, seven, thermo (look forward to seeing that DNQ chart thing, I love articles!), Iz (and I like rocky/crazy too so keep going, they prob just get edged out, I often have not enough points to available to those that deserve it) and I'm going red with embarrasment at all the kind words! The next one is The One
April 17, 201411 yr Why 'Pulse' and 'In Your Bed' didn't qualify is beyond my understanding. You have your own style in your entries which 90% of other countries here don't own. It seems to happen it is very indie to the buzzjack listening habits and I wish you all the best - and I am your pretty loyal voter.
