May 5, 201411 yr I for one would probably buy this if not for the ridiculous price - £8.99 for 9 tracks? Seriously? It's only worth not buying the tracks separately if you like all of them, and even then you'd save 8p if you did! Obviously it'll go down eventually, but I see them losing a good few sales. I agree completely. I would have bought the album as I already have magic, but £9 for 9 tracks is a bit much. Can definitely see the physicals hit if they charge £10-£12 for it in shops

Can definitely see the physicals hit if they charge £10-£12 for it in shops To be honest, I bet the vast majority of people wouldn't care. They'll just go ahead and buy it! Coldplay aren't the first band to release an album of just 9 songs.
May 6, 201411 yr It's 42+ minutes long, so it's 9 songs... so what? It's longer or in the same standards that's CD's are. Do't get you all but whatever.
May 6, 201411 yr £8.99 is a ridiculous price for 9 songs though regardless of how long they are. It's just nonsensical when the album costs more than just cherrypicking all the individual tracks.

For me that's the ideal length, 40-50 minutes regardless of number of tracks. Most seem to be between 4 and 5 minutes long. I hate studio albums at over an hour. I see the brilliant classic Bat Out Of Hell is to re-enter the top 30 and that's 46 minutes long with just 7 tracks! Edited May 6, 201411 yr by Common Sense

Yeah, my point was that when it's cheaper to buy all the tracks individually, I'm sure quite a few people will do that - it doesn't really matter how long they are. Not to mention that if you listen to it first and there are one or two you don't like, you might not buy those tracks and save a couple of pounds. I know a lot of people won't care, but there are some who won't spend more than they need to if they think it's a waste. For many this might mean waiting until it goes down in price, but that will obviously harm its first week sales too...
May 16, 201411 yr It'sa non-brainer that it'll be #1, but how many weeks will it have there? I'd say at least 3, depending on what else is due for imminent release.
May 16, 201411 yr I think Sam Smith should probably be able to best Coldplay's 2nd week sales. They may return to #1 the week after that if they hold up better than Sam but I think it's more likely Sam will get 2 weeks. After that Kasabian, Linkin Park and Ed Sheeran line up for a fairly predictable few weeks (although Linkin Park might miss out if the success - or lack thereof - of the singles is anything to go by).
May 16, 201411 yr Sam versus Coldplay's second week will indeed be an interesting one. I've always got the impression that Sam has been over-hyped and won't be anywhere near the male Emeli in sales/ubiquity terms that some people are expecting. I'm not sure his appeal is actually very broad so it wouldn't surprise me to see him do relatively modestly overall, given the huge hype. I reckon a double platinum album when all is said and done, which would still be a great achievement obviously. His Graham Norton performance should definitely set 'Stay With Me' up for #1 though and help the album get a good first week total - I'm inclined to think that will give him the advantage needed over Coldplay.
May 16, 201411 yr I do not expect it to sell over 120k, unless there's a special amazon or google play offer.
May 16, 201411 yr Flop, it's not very good Midnight aside. It never stopped them selling bucket loads before.
May 16, 201411 yr It never stopped them selling bucket loads before. Mylo would've flopped without X FActor, which they said they'd never go on ... before the album release!
May 16, 201411 yr Didnt it already get to No1 with over 200k sales before that though? It just reached them out to more people and finally made more people buy Paradise to help get it to No1.
May 16, 201411 yr It had sold 542k in the seven weeks before the X Factor and 'Paradise' had just gone top 10 so they were hardly on a massive decline :P.
May 16, 201411 yr No it was a massive sales decline though and it needed X Factor. Heres a sample of the sales from 2011 as well it shows sales were declioning then and Coldplays first week sales were more or less in line with sales at that time - 25-Jun Progress Take That 77,720 02-Jul Born This Way Lady Gaga 47,184 09-Jul 4 Beyonce 89,211 16-Jul 4 Beyonce 44,929 23-Jul 21 Adele 43,555 30-Jul 21 Adele 46,649 06-Aug Back To Black Amy Winehouse 44,076 13-Aug Back To Black Amy Winehouse 63,071 20-Aug Back To Black Amy Winehouse 43,726 27-Aug Welcome Reality Nero 30,640 03-Sep Echoes Will Young 65,773 10-Sep I'm With You Red Hot Chili Peppers 71,858 17-Sep Playing In The Shadows Example 56,224 24-Sep + Ed Sheeran 102,350 01-Oct Velociprator Kasabian 94,088 08-Oct The Awakening James Morrison 62,181 15-Oct The Awakening James Morrison 36,411 22-Oct The Ultimate Collection Steps 34,200 29-Oct Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds 122,530 05-Nov Mylo Xyloto Coldplay 208,343 12-Nov Ceremonies Florence + The Machine 94,050 19-Nov Someone To Watch Over Me Susan Boyle 72,745 26-Nov Christmas Michael Buble 85,787 03-Dec Talk That Talk Rihanna 163,819
May 18, 201411 yr I think this will clear 165,000 easily - The individual tracks have done well on iTunes and album pre-orders have been Top 5 everywhere. Also everyone will be stocking it - Supermarkets, HMV etc with big displays so could lead to some casual buyers picking up a copy - I think there will be a lot of price competition too on the MP3 version with Amazon, Google, Sainsbury's etc, all selling it for less than £5.
