Posted May 25, 201411 yr http://i62.tinypic.com/2dm57pv.jpg Hello and welcome to another rate in the cinema forum, this time we'll be focusing on those guys that you just love to hate - movie villains. Below, you will find a list of 30 well known film villains. I'm aware that compiling an initial list without opening it to nominations won't please everyone, but doing it this way will ensure more interest instantly and produce a manageable list to rate. I apologise if your favourite villain isn't here, but there was always going to be some that had to be left out and I tried to steer away from the more obscure/older villains as they may not be as well known. Feel free to discuss those you feel deserve a place on here too. I have compiled this list objectively (I haven't seen some of the films in the list) using various countdowns around the web compared with contemporary and well known examples so there should be something for everyone, Youtube links are included to jog your memory and/or give you an idea of their character/most infamous moment (more than one in some cases, MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS): xx.x Cruella De Vil (101 Dalmations) xx.x Dracula (Dracula) xx.x Hans Gruber (Die Hard) (The Dark Knight) xx.x Pazuzu/Regan MacNeil (The Exorcist) xx.x The Wicked Witch of the West (The Wizard of Oz) Some generic guidelines: - Rates in this thread please - Please rate a minimum of 13 of the above list of villains, you don't need to have seen half of these to be able to vote. - You are allowed one 11 and one -1, rest between 0 and 10 just in case you'd forgotten that - Commentary is not compulsory but seeing as this is a film discussion forum, it is obvs encouraged. May 25, 201411 yr YAY. Often for rates you have some idea of how it will pan out, but for this i am clueless (although i can hazard a very good guess at what will steal it...). I know a lot of these, but will have to either watch the ones i don't know during this half term or void my scores for them if i don't get the time. Very happy to see practically all my favourites there, and on quick glance i think my 11 will be a toss up between Anton Chigurh, Cruella, and Pazuzu/Regan. And probably as low a score as i can muster for Norman Bates because i find him so vulnerable and in need of saving in all his villainy :( (p.s just glancing at John's top 100 list and this list could potentially be missing a Terminator or 2 :o)
May 25, 201411 yr LOVE me a good villain, far more interesting than stupid good guys. I can't say that any on that list are personal favourites, but in general cinema terms it's probably quite FAIR. Though anyone worth their salt knows The Emperor > Darth Vader.
May 25, 201411 yr Will add comments later and scores for those I watch if I have time, though some of them I am simply not going to be watching under any circumstances. Basing them on how EVIL/how much of a cunt they are/how much I LOVE THEM, not how technically good or interesting they might be. 05.5 Alex DeLarge (A Clockwork Orange) 10.0 Annie Wilkes (Misery) ?? May 26, 201411 yr Good idea for a rate! 09.0 Alex DeLarge (A Clockwork Orange) 07.0 Annie Wilkes (Misery) xx.x Anton Chigurh (No Country for Old Men) 06.0 Amon Goeth (Schindler’s List) 07.0 Robert Begbie (Trainspotting) 09.0 Biff Tannen (Back to the Future) 05.0 Bill Cutting (Gangs of New York) 11.0 The Child Catcher (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) 04.0 Cruella De Vil (101 Dalmations) - never quite understood why she's so highly rated 07.0 Darth Vader (Star Wars) 09.0 Dracula (Dracula) 08.0 Freddy Krueger (A Nightmare on Elm Street) 06.0 HAL 9000 (2001: A Space Odyssey) 06.0 Hannibal Lecter (Silence of the Lambs) 04.0 Hans Gruber (Die Hard) 06.0 Jack Torrance (The Shining) 03.0 John Doe (Se7en) -1.0 The Joker (The Dark Knight) - not even the best Joker 08.0 Lord Voldemort (Harry Potter) 01.0 Maleficent (Sleeping Beauty) 07.0 Man (Bambi) 04.0 Michael Myers (Halloween) 10.0 Mr Potter (It’s A Wonderful Life) 08.0 Norman Bates (Psycho) 10.0 Nurse Ratched (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest) 07.0 Pazuzu/Regan MacNeil (The Exorcist) 09.0 The Queen (Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs) 03.0 Scar (The Lion King) 08.0 The Shark (Jaws) 09.0 The Wicked Witch of the West (The Wizard of Oz)
May 26, 201411 yr Wow this is gonna be tough. So many iconic characters here. Oh and I'm going to comment on them too 10.0 Alex DeLarge - Not sure I'd really consider him an outright villain - yes he does despicable things but he's kind of an anti-hero too. Always inferred that society was the real villain. 06.0 Annie Wilkes - Deserved Oscar winner but not an original idea. I remember liking the film but have no desire to ever watch it again so I'm bumping her down 08.0 Anton Chigurh - Just a man doing his job? Not really he seems to take great delight in it. Powerful and memorable character 11.0 Amon Goeth - A genuine historical figure and for that he gets the 11. Even the SS charged him with crimes and that tells you all you need to know. 06.0 Begbie - Small time petty thug. Not a nice guy but not inherently evil. We've all met people like him at some point in life 03.0 Biff Tannen - School bully and a caricature one at that xx.x Bill Cutting - To my shame I've yet to see this film 05.0 The Child Catcher - Creepy and menacing in equal amounts but never bothered me. Too cartoony 07.0 Cruella De Vil - Not a Disney fan but she's certainly memorable and her motives are purely self interest 09.0 Darth Vader - Normally would get top marks but he's fictional and his redemption in ROTJ helps him. I grew up with the original films and they inform my opinion thusly. The prequels diminish him a lot 09.0 Dracula - Oh good it's Lugosi you've picked. For me the definitive Count. A cold calculating character who finds his doom through love. A classic 08.0 Freddy Krueger - A genuinely terrifying idea. Excellent in the first film. Garbage in the rest which loses marks 10.0 HAL 9000 - Iconic character and so wonderfully cold. One of the best 09.0 Hannibal Lecter - Charming, witty, psychotic and a genius. A classic 08.0 Hans Gruber - Without Rickman to spar off of Die Hard wouldn't have worked anyware near as well 09.0 Jack Torrance - A villain and a victim at the same time. Stunning performance from Nicholson makes the character more than its rather 2D outline 09.0 John Doe - Another superb performance elevates this above the norm 10.5 The Joker - One of THE powerhouse performances from recent cinema. For me The Joker is the ultimate villain in fiction. 0.60 Lord Voldemort - Well played but something of a cliched character and to be honest the Potter films don't really excite me much 0.60 Maleficent - Memorable and ahead of it's time portrayal wise but she's always going to be a fairytale witch. Although I look forward to Angelina Jolie's take. 0.70 Man - Don't remember much about Bambi but do remember the crucial scene with the hunter. The villain yes but just man being man. In many waysshould earn a 10 because it's bloodsport but I just never cared enough for the film 07.0 Michael Myers - Groundbreaking and easily the best slasher flick. However Myers soon deteriorated into repetitive drivel. But going of the original only it's a 7 06.0 Mr Potter - A typical pig headed businessman but nothing truly memorable for me even tough I love the film. It's all about Stewart 09.0 Norman Bates - I want to give him more but he's so likeable and funny despite the mental health issues. A true legend of cinema 10.0 Nurse Ratched - The queen of all of cinema's bitches. Perfect casting and I could never watch Kai Winn without wanting to punch her for what she did to Murphy 10.0 Pazuzu/Regan MacNeil - Pazuzu the villain and Regan the victim. One of my favourite films. Simply stunning in all ways. Thereafter copied poorly by a million sucky horror films. 05.0 The Queen - Too fairytale again and I'm more familiar with the Grimm version where you ould argue the dwarves (the sadistic fiends) are equally villainous xx.x Scar - Never seen it 08.0 The Shark - Not a villan at all for me but just a fish looking for food. Brilliant film though and as a charatcer it owns the film despite a glorious cast and barely being in it. 09.0 The Wicked Witch of the West - You have to consider cinema in the 1930s to truly appreciate this film. She is the witch from which all Disney witches are inspired. Mind you, if you dropped your house on my sister, I'd probably have it in for you too. Obviously I'm not asking for any changes but I think these would deserve special mention in my list Michael Corleone (The Godfather pt II) Weyland/Yutani/The Company (Alien/Aliens etc) The Terminator Max Cady (Cape Fear) Reverend Harry Powell (Night Of The Hunter) Frank Booth (Blue Velvet) Kahn Noonian Singh (Wrath Of Kahn) Edited May 26, 201411 yr by Severin
May 27, 201411 yr Author The Terminator Reverend Harry Powell (Night Of The Hunter) I almost included the latter actually as he seemed prominent in all of these online countdowns, from what I've read, he seems rather terrifying. Terminator was quite an obvious omission, not sure why I forgot that. oh and more votes plz
May 27, 201411 yr 09.0 Alex DeLarge (A Clockwork Orange) my favourite character from my favourite ever film. The scene you chose captures everything xx.x Annie Wilkes (Misery) 11.0 Anton Chigurh (No Country for Old Men) debated about this one, but for sheer brutality, originality and mystique i've gone for a 11. Also the one i'd least like to meet in a dark alley. Also this 08.0 Amon Goeth (Schindler’s List) 05.0 Begbie (Trainspotting) 04.0 Biff Tannen (Back to the Future) xx.x Bill Cutting (Gangs of New York) 08.0 The Child Catcher (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) 10.0 Cruella De Vil (101 Dalmations) Mr Burns doing Cruella would also have been a 10 08.0 Darth Vader (Star Wars) 07.0 Dracula (Dracula) 10.0 Freddy Krueger (A Nightmare on Elm Street) the first character/film to truly terrify me. Yet for some reason, growing up i still watched him over and over again from the age of like 5, until it became a weekly ritual - would have been 11.0 if it wasn't for his downward spiral into parody which we don't need to mention again :/ 09.5 HAL 9000 (2001: A Space Odyssey) 09.0 Hannibal Lecter (Silence of the Lambs) 04.0 Hans Gruber (Die Hard) 09.0 Jack Torrance (The Shining) 08.5 John Doe (Se7en) 09.0 The Joker (The Dark Knight) my money would be on this one stealing the win because it's very recent, memorable and still raw. I almost hope it doesn't, because sometimes stripping it all back is what makes a villain work moreso as a number of others on this list show 08.0 Lord Voldemort (Harry Potter) 07.0 Maleficent (Sleeping Beauty) 05.0 Man (Bambi) 09.0 Michael Myers (Halloween) 08.0 Mr Potter (It’s A Wonderful Life) 05.0 Norman Bates (Psycho) if we were rating based on characterisations as a whole, he'd be my 11. But as a villain he loses marks for being so vulnerable and dare i say, likeable? 09.0 Nurse Ratched (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest) 10.0 Pazuzu/Regan MacNeil (The Exorcist) blahhhh. I see her face when i close my eyes for days after watching the film. The definition of "getting under your skin" 07.0 The Queen (Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs) 10.0 Scar (The Lion King) no villain has made me cry more 05.0 The Shark (Jaws) 09.0 The Wicked Witch of the West (The Wizard of Oz)
May 28, 201411 yr Author Most of my commentary will come when I do the results (which will happen no matter how many votes we get dw :P) 09.0 Alex DeLarge (A Clockwork Orange) 08.0 Annie Wilkes (Misery) (Quite excellently done both in the film and the book) 09.5 Anton Chigurh (No Country for Old Men) (I would probably end it there if I was in the same room as him. Terrifying) xx.x Amon Goeth (Schindler’s List) 06.5 Begbie (Trainspotting) 05.0 Biff Tannen (Back to the Future) 08.5 Bill Cutting (Gangs of New York) (Y'all need to watch this :o Film's a little lengthly, but Daniel Day Lewis is...wow) 06.0 The Child Catcher (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) (creeps me out) 09.0 Cruella De Vil (101 Dalmations) 10.5 Darth Vader (Star Wars) 08.5 Dracula (Dracula) 09.0 Freddy Krueger (A Nightmare on Elm Street) (for the first time he appeared at least) 10.0 HAL 9000 (2001: A Space Odyssey) (Horrifying) 10.0 Hannibal Lecter (Silence of the Lambs) 08.5 Hans Gruber (Die Hard) (Alan Rickman was just born to do this) 09.0 Jack Torrance (The Shining) (Although going by the book, he wasn't really a villain at all!) 08.5 John Doe (Se7en) 11.0 The Joker (The Dark Knight) (Absolute masterclass in villainy, both in performance and character) 09.0 Lord Voldemort (Harry Potter) 05.5 Maleficent (Sleeping Beauty) 08.5 Man (Bambi) (Tough to score as a character, definitely affected me in a big way though) 08.5 Michael Myers (Halloween) 06.0 Mr Potter (It’s A Wonderful Life) 09.0 Norman Bates (Psycho) 08.0 Nurse Ratched (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest) 09.0 Pazuzu/Regan MacNeil (The Exorcist) 07.5 The Queen (Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs) 10.0 Scar (The Lion King) (That scene...) 06.0 The Shark (Jaws) 07.0 The Wicked Witch of the West (The Wizard of Oz) (I probably watched it at the wrong time, I never found her than threatening)
May 31, 201411 yr I really hate villains and bad characters (generally) but I will take part in this rate based on their bitchiness/viciousness. :P 6.0 Alex DeLarge (A Clockwork Orange) I don't think that he is a bad person. He is just not a well-educated man.. ;) 10 Annie Wilkes (Misery) I knew a b*tch like her in my life. I wish nobody had this moment... :smoke: 1.0 Anton Chigurh (No Country for Old Men) What a ridiculous villain. This movie didn't deserve the Oscar and this fictional character is quite tragicomic.. <_< xx.x Amon Goeth (Schindler’s List) xx.x Begbie (Trainspotting) 1.0 Biff Tannen (Back to the Future) A spoiled kid.. 6.0 Bill Cutting (Gangs of New York) I have watched this movie 12 years ago and I don't remember many things about him. I don't think that he is one of the most evil characters in cinema though.. xx.x The Child Catcher (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) 9.0 Cruella De Vil (101 Dalmations) I can't believe that she wants to kill those beautiful creatures. B*tch! 6.0 Darth Vader (Star Wars) I think that he is one of the most overrated villains..In reality, he is a spoiled kid with mask. 10 Dracula (Dracula) One of the most iconic villains!!! Everyone knows him.. 10 Freddy Krueger (A Nightmare on Elm Street) He's very scary and it's quite difficult to avoid him. Especially, if you love to sleep... :kink: xx.x HAL 9000 (2001: A Space Odyssey) 11 Hannibal Lecter (Silence of the Lambs) I'm really afraid of this man. When I watched "The Silence of The Lambs", I was terrified. :o xx.x Hans Gruber (Die Hard) 8.0 Jack Torrance (The Shining) I think that there are many people like him out there.. 10 John Doe (Se7en) Killing a pregnant was his biggest mistake.. 9.0 The Joker (The Dark Knight) This character is quite debatable. Jack Nicholson's character wasn't very bad (He was funy) but Heath Ledger's character was very dangerous.. 8.0 Lord Voldemort (Harry Potter) He's quite scary and I don't think that Harry Potter was his main problem.. xx.x Maleficent (Sleeping Beauty) I haven't watched the movie yet. However, I will vote for her the next week. xx.x Man (Bambi) 10 Michael Myers (Halloween) I have watched many of his movies. He has very serious problems with his psychology. Firstly, he is not sensitive.. xx.x Mr Potter (It’s A Wonderful Life) 1.0 Norman Bates (Psycho) I will never be afraid of someone who wears his dead mother's clothes. 4.0 Nurse Ratched (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest) I really don't remember this b*tch. However, I'm sure that I met a nurse like her. 5.0 Pazuzu/Regan MacNeil (The Exorcist) She's very scary but she really didn't want this bad luck..So, I'm not generous with my vote here. 4.0 The Queen (Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs) A smug b*tch! 2.0 Scar (The Lion King) I think that Disney Characters couldn't be very evil because they are animated.. 1.0 The Shark (Jaws) He/It is not bad. His/its nature faults.. 5.0 The Wicked Witch of the West (The Wizard of Oz) The fact that many British compared this character with Thatcher, it means something.. :D There are many notable absences such as Pennywise ("It"), Jason Voorhees ("Friday the 13th"), Jigsaw ("Saw"), Leatherface ("The Texas Chainsaw Massacre") and Judge Doom ("Who frammed Rogger Rabit").. June 1, 201411 yr xx.x Alex DeLarge (A Clockwork Orange) 09.0 Annie Wilkes (Misery) xx.x Anton Chigurh (No Country for Old Men) xx.x Amon Goeth (Schindler’s List) xx.x Begbie (Trainspotting) 03.0 Biff Tannen (Back to the Future) xx.x Bill Cutting (Gangs of New York) 07.5 The Child Catcher (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) 06.0 Cruella De Vil (101 Dalmations) 07.0 Darth Vader (Star Wars) 07.0 Dracula (Dracula) xx.x Freddy Krueger (A Nightmare on Elm Street) xx.x HAL 9000 (2001: A Space Odyssey) xx.x Hannibal Lecter (Silence of the Lambs) xx.x Hans Gruber (Die Hard) xx.x Jack Torrance (The Shining) xx.x John Doe (Se7en) 09.0 The Joker (The Dark Knight) 09.0 Lord Voldemort (Harry Potter) - (Does this include Tom Riddle in the Chamber of Secrets? I've included it in my rate, meaning it's gone from an 8 to a 9 as I feel like this is the film where he feels like a more direct threat and he's at his ~villainy~ best.) 10.0 Maleficent (Sleeping Beauty) 05.0 Man (Bambi) xx.x Michael Myers (Halloween) 05.0 Mr Potter (It’s A Wonderful Life) xx.x Norman Bates (Psycho) xx.x Nurse Ratched (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest) xx.x Pazuzu/Regan MacNeil (The Exorcist) 08.0 The Queen (Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs) 10.0 Scar (The Lion King) 06.0 The Shark (Jaws) 09.0 The Wicked Witch of the West (The Wizard of Oz) It was difficult to think of what factors to hold in greater regard to others but it was interesting to think of the characters as a whole and to try and take away your opinion of the movie itself.
June 1, 201411 yr Author I'll set a deadline for this for June 6th, I'll see if I can get the results up at the weekend/next week sometime, don't want it to drag too much and especially now I have another rate series to handle oops. I'll PM a few movie folk in the week that have yet to post in this thread (looking at you popchartfreak/randomfurlong) Edited June 1, 201411 yr by Chez Wombat
