Posted October 28, 201410 yr List songs that weren't number one but who had higher first week sales than a number one of its year at any point in that year Example:Disco Love by the Saturdays (entered at 5 with 51,690 copies sold in first week, week ending 19 October) On week ending 9 February 2013, Get Up (Rattle) by Bingo Players was number one with 51,450 copies sold that week On week ending 14 December 2013, Somewhere Only We Know by Lily Allen was number one with 46,279 copies sold that week. The following week (week ending 21 December 2013), Somewhere Only We Know by Lily Allen was again number one with 47,676 copies sold. Seems like a few missed opportunaties for Disco Love to have been number one. (And by the way, there were six new entries in the top 10 that week, including Eminem "Berzerk" (#2) and Conor Maynard "R U Crazy?" (#4), both higher than Disco Love, meaning that both of those songs could have also been number one had they been released on those aforementionned weeks. Other new entries including Miley Cyrus "Wrecking Ball" (#1), James Blunt "Bonfire Heart" (#6) and John Newman "Cheating" (#9) Got any other examples? If you do, feel free to post them! (For further information, in 2011 on two occasions the weekly sale of the number one was less than 50,000 copies, on 3 occasions the weekly sale was less than 60,000 copies, on 8 it was less than 70,000 copies and on 18 occasions it was less than 80,000 copies. In 2012 on four occasions the weekly sale of the number one was less than 60,000 copies, on 9 occasions it was less than 70,000 copies and on 15 occasions it was less than 80,000 copies. And In 2013 twice the weekly sale of the number one was less than 50,000 copies, on 5 occasions it was less than 60,000 copies, on 11 occasions it was than 70,000 copies and on 16 occasions it was less than 80,000 copies.)

October 28, 201410 yr This thread reminds me of when N-Dubz said if XF didn't exist they'd have been no.1 with I Need You. I expect a lot of singles released in 2004 had a shot at no.1 at some point if we apply this logic.
October 28, 201410 yr Up by The Saturdays. Could have been No.1 if it had been released as their debut single the week Coldplay went to No.1 with Viva La Vida :( What Are You Waiting For by The Saturdays. Could have been No.1 if...the 37 songs in front had never been written :(
October 28, 201410 yr Well the Saturdays would beat the Beatles with 18 no.1s if no one else had released music in the parts 10 years. They're just so unlucky.

October 28, 201410 yr The Saturdays' Not Giving Up could so easily have been a number one with 18,424 copies sold, if only it had been released in March 2006. SUCH A MISSED OPPORTUNITY :( (edit: couldn't resist, sorry Bré :( ) Edited October 28, 201410 yr by مدهش*

October 28, 201410 yr Just Can't Get Enough by The Saturdays sold 64,785 copies to enter at #2 on 14 March 2009. The week before, Kelly Clarkson sold 51,115 copies to enter at #1 Lily Allen also sold 59,671 and 45,629 copies to stay at #1 the two weeks before that. 2 weeks after The Saturdays entered at #2, Lady GaGa got 3 weeks at #1 selling 53,699 , 57,781 , and 55,318. I won't mention all the other occasions that they could have gone to #1 or I'll be here all night. They really were unlucky that week. As for 'Forever Is Over' which sold 38,846 copies, well, there wasn't a single week in 2009 that could've been #1 :D They'd have to have gone back in time and released it for the chart week 9 August 2008, to beat Kid Rock who sold 37,111 copies. Or even further back but I'm sure their team were thinking about saving energy bills for use of the TARDIS.
October 28, 201410 yr If the Saturdays had a Tardis to hand, wouldn't they be better off covering the Spice Girls, travelling back to 1990 and releasing first?
October 28, 201410 yr Well the Saturdays would beat the Beatles with 18 no.1s if no one else had released music in the parts 10 years. They're just so unlucky. This is true. I can't believe how unlucky they are :(
October 29, 201410 yr Yeah, The Sats have always been screwed over with their tracks... Also, I love King Conor and stan for "R U Crazy" like hell, but Miley deserves that #1 hands down. "Can't Say No" though: now THAT was robbed. Edited October 29, 201410 yr by #Slayberry
October 29, 201410 yr 9nBDlyGSogw Totally, utterly, undeservedly and shamefully robbed of what would have been one of the best #1s of the noughties by a release screw-up. Shops received the single on the Saturday, put it on shelves immediately and sold 809 copies of it too early, charting it at #68 on its one day of sales. A week later and a posthumous track by Aaliyah beats it to the top by 595 copies!

October 29, 201410 yr But for any of this to actually occur, you'd have to assume all these songs would always sell the same in the first week whenever they're released.
October 29, 201410 yr Yeah, comparing sales over different months or even years is silly (though in fairness most people in this thread obviously know that and are just playing along) I suppose it's a song that sells more than the Number One singles in the weeks immediately before or after - or even both - that might fit better. Puretone is a good example of an unlucky one, although not because of the scheduling itself, but because of the leaks.
October 29, 201410 yr Take That - Rule the World sold enough to be number 1 in any of 47 other weeks of 2007. There were 53 charts that year. Edited October 29, 201410 yr by AntoineTTe
October 29, 201410 yr The most famous cases are Last Christmas and Whenever Wherever which had huge first week sales that would get them #1 in 99% of any given week, but were unlucky to be released on the same week as other giant-selling record-breaking records.
