Well whilst I do agree the material thus far has been middling, often atrocious, 'You Got It All' has proved that they are capable of a good single when they put their minds to it - the radio play alone for this single and the feedback from people who, like myself didn't care much for them speaks for itself.

I think they've shot themselves in the foot not making their stuff available to stream though. Seven tracks in this week's top 40 surpassed over 1m streams just in that week. They could have easily arrested the swift decline of the single's chart run if they'd had it on Spotify and Deezer, even with a quarter or half a million streams.

I'm not sure if they're unrecognisable as such, perhaps their names aren't exactly very well known but I'm sure people could at least be like "the one with the hair" for George, "the gay one" for Jaymi, "the one with the kid" for JJ, etc. I think the issue lies with both the material and the lack of radio support. The material is good IMO but they have no USP compared to other boybands. 1D, 5SOS and The Vamps all stand out with their material, Union J's songs really could be anyone, which is a shame. And with regards to radio support, they have Capital of course but that only gets them so far, look at other artists that have only had Capital support - Elyar Fox (a total of three top 40 weeks across two singles, one of which went top 5) and Lawson, for example. Neither of them have made any kind of lasting impact and just Capital support is rarely enough for an artist. Union J had a little bit of Radio 1 support at first but nothing major and I think that's what's lacking. Not something they can easily rectify either :(

(oops that's a bit tl;dr)

This single in fact has had broad support from pretty much all commercial radio and reached #3 on airplay. Clearly that didn't translate to sales, partly because the song is a bit dated but mainly imo because the boyband market is saturated and UnionJ are one too many.

Tbh I don't agree that 1D are musically distinctive (the vamps and 5sos are), they 'could be anyone' but ....they got there first....

Completely agree with you on this. I'm curious as to what will happen if they are dropped, especially in terms of individuals.

Just to clarify, it hasn't made #3 on airplay, it's made #9 :kink:

UK Top 50 Radio Airplay

Chart Run: 38-43-40-23-12-16-9-13-still charting

Weeks: 8

Still a good airplay run of course, but in all honesty, it's not being played on Radio 1 which is where it would really translate into sales. Capital only takes you so far.

One Direction definitely are musically distinctive, I'm not just being a biased stan here but they have their sound and they roll with it - the stadium pop anthems like What Makes You Beautiful, Best Song Ever, Steal My Girl, etc. which are all distinctively One Direction.

I think the only reason Union J got a second chance was because both JLS and The Wanted packed up their bags and the record company might've thought they had an opening for them on the market. I don't see how they can justify a third album, but we'll see...

If they are dropped (which is probably 99% likely after this album - which is a shame because while they might not have the most distinctive sound ever both of their albums have been amazing), I can certainly see George getting a bit of a push as a solo artist.

Peaked #3 on Comparemyradio, currently #6, over last 30 days with over 5000 spins is actually very good radio support.

Have to disagree on 1D, nothing vocally or musically distinctive at all imo, just a vehicle. But they are a good mix of individuals which brand collectively into something quite effortlessly cool, whereas UnionJ are a bit stiff and old fashioned with a forced 'smouldering look' approach, which is anything but cool haha

Ps. Don't get me wrong I have actually liked most songs 1D have delivered :0)

That site's not official, it's a representation but not official. The official peak is #9 and this week it dropped from #13 to #46 with just under 3000 spins.

Obviously it's each to their own but I wouldn't call 1D a vehicle at all, I think they have their sound pinned down to an absolute tee and have just progressed it with each album. Union J don't have their own sound as such which is where they're failing IMO!

I don't think the music is really that important to their failures really. You could see even from their time on X Factor that they were built up to be more popular than they really were. It's the same story with their music career: they get good promo, decent-ish support (at times, i.e this single) but the fans really just aren't there.

The point is this UnionJ song has had very good radio support and certainly not just Capital.

1D were made to be a vehicle, to fill a market gap, I don't think that's really in doubt. I hope they get increasing independence.

UnionJ I guess still have some chance with another single or two off this album, released on a shoestring budget. But it would take a miracle for them to break through from this point.

Oh I'm not denying they've had good radio support but I also don't think you can succeed with a long-running hit with support JUST from Capital and Heart. This song obviously isn't comparable to say, All of Me, which Heart played non-stop and obviously that's only just left the top 40.
Far too late but the single and album have been added to streaming sites - Also hoping that they will pick up some post Christmas sales now that the album is half price.

:cheer: It sounds bad but I was waiting for that as I knew it wouldn't be long - just downloaded. :)

Hoping others do the same - About 60,000 people this week would be good

Thus surpassing their whole first album sales near enough in one week? :kink:

Album up to #72 on iTunes - The £3.99 price tag seems to be working a bit!
Glad a few people are investing - It's a decent album! We need a 99p Google Play reduction next  It sold about 20k in its first 2 weeks so will hopefully have a boost in tomorrow's chart as after that can't see there being much more life in it? :(

Sucks how bad this has done it is a very decent album! Maybe they should have had a better 1st single Tonight is a good song but listening to the album there are much better songs.

Is it just me or should She's In My Head should have been the lead single to me it is:

  • Catchy
  • Radio Friendly
  • Chorus makes you actually wanna sing along! (I do it everytime the song comes on)
  • AGAIN DAT CHORUS!
  • Could make people actually sit up and take notice I have played the song for a couple of non unoin j fans and they love the song
Pleased the album was 99p on Google Play - Hopefully it's got some decent sales from that! It also seems the price is still 99p today too! :yahoo:
