10. Neon Trees “Sleeping With A Friend”

 

I’m actually surprised this is top ten as I’ve had far less exposure to it than the songs that are still to come. If anything, that shows just how strong Sleeping With A Friend is, and in fact I cannot fault it except for the troubling fact that so many people haven’t heard it. The video is so charming and rewatchable, and the song is a melodic masterpiece. So many textures going on sound-wise and it’s always a huge pleasure to listen to.

animals is fantastic too i agree, their best single ever for me probably although daylight is great too. really strong pop song and so many hooks!

5. Ed Sheeran “Don’t”

Don’t is quite easily Ed’s best effort to date for me, so I’m thrilled it became his biggest hit in America and first top 10 on Billboard. (Thinking Out Loud has since outperformed it.) It didn’t get old anywhere near as quickly as Sing did, and in fact I’m still not that bored of hearing it. It’s ALL about the verses for me, especially the first one with a melody that’s just perfection.

(Obligatory magic smiley :magic:) I’ve shown enough love for Rude over the past year so its near-victory here is no surprise! On summer drives it was always there for me to jam to, and it’s clear I need to leave Buzzjack to find another site where people aren’t so in denial of its grooviness :music: Cheers to the few fellow supporters out there. Rude is too good to go down as a one-hit wonder so I'll hold onto the glimmer of hope that Magic! won't magically disappear.

1. Paramore “Ain’t It Fun”

 

I have so much appreciation for Paramore after everything they’ve been through the last few years, and the fact they overcame it with a new sense of their ability, resulting in their best output yet. This is not the same band that gave me my previous faves That’s What You Get and Decode. Still Into You was the moment of reassurance that Paramore is still capable of such perfection. Then they delivered the pinnacle of their career, Ain’t It Fun. The song rightfully became their biggest ever hit in America and despite coming from 2013, nothing in 2014 could match the energy and exhilaration that lasts from intro to outro, and from the first listen to the 200th. I lived and breathed this song as it accompanied so many of the best, most carefree moments of my year.

The irony is that it’s meant to be a dose of reality for the listener. The lyrics are a fantastic portrayal of that slap-in-the-face moment where you realize life isn’t fair and no one’s looking out for you but yourself. And yet Hayley’s words are riddled with sarcasm, which is why the song’s upbeat, anthemic nature works so well. It’s hitting a little close to home now as I type this the night before I start a brand new chapter in my life, and as my favorite song of 2014 I can’t think of a better source of motivation for that very moment. Omg, how did I not mention the video!? The tone definitely matches how the song makes me feel :wub: The GIFs I put there are from my favorite part of the video, basically the peak moment of the song for me.

You're right, Rude stood out for being different, plus it blew up at the right time of year, which is what Riptide should have done.

Echosmith's next single here is Bright, not sure how to feel about that. If they can keep honing their sound the way Paramore have, hopefully that's not too ambitious but I'd like to think they're capable of even better than what they've created already.

Rude actually ended up a few spots higher than I expected when I started! So I'm kind of surprised.

Re: Ain't It Fun, you'll have to let me know if you played the music video or the lyric video. The longer version is better, but the video is fantastic, so I suggest both :P

I'm not too keen on 'Ain't It Fun', apart from ADoseofBuckley's reasonings (the whole message of the song not really coinciding with her stardom since her teenage years), I've just never been a fan of Hayley Williams as a vocalists, with a couple of exceptions. I'm not too keen on 'Ain't It Fun', apart from ADoseofBuckley's reasonings (the whole message of the song not really coinciding with her stardom since her teenage years), I've just never been a fan of Hayley Williams as a vocalists, with a couple of exceptions. Some brilliant inclusions here though, particularly the likes of 'Heaven Knows' which I haven't seen in any other EOYs yet. Great stuff!
