I am glad it had such a personal effect on you too !! truly a buzzjack moment that will go down in history forever more

60. Clean Bandit feat. Jess Glynne "Rather Be"

59. will.i.am feat. Miley Cyrus, French Montana, & Wiz Khalifa "Feelin' Myself"
will.i.am gets revenge on Clean Bandit! Actually I like both equally and was glad to see "Rather Be" stay at #1 that week. "Rather Be" even became a hit stateside later in the year and peaked at #10, which was wonderful but I felt it could have done even better.

58. Demi Lovato "Neon Lights"

57. Eves "Zen"

"Zen" is my second favorite of my Unknown Pleasures entries, of which my favorite entry is still to come! This is definitely a sad one as Eves finds herself falling out of love. I love the chorus line "You don't spin my head like you used to / I am tired of trying to act amused", so its repeated use throughout the song is what kept me listening to it over and over.

56. Walk The Moon "Shut Up And Dance"

55. OneRepublic "I Lived"

First intended for release earlier in the year, "I Lived" actually started to get airplay in the US before OneRepublic reversed course and debuted "Love Runs Out" instead. At first I thought "I Lived" sounded too similar to "Counting Stars" and wished for a different single, but the lyrics hit me really hard and changed my mind. I absolutely feel like Ryan Tedder is speaking to me here and his lyrics are definitely words to live by. It couldn't have come at a better time because I've seen so little of the world and spend most of my time just sitting here instead of experiencing things and living life to the fullest. I desperately want to relate to this song, so it's a massive inspiration for me now. And without a doubt this is one of Ryan's best songwriting efforts ever, which is saying a lot!
Another OneRepublic song that hit me in a similar way this year is "
" from the same album Native. I've omitted it from this countdown because it's too special to me to rank among these other songs. I may give the song its own post later on if I'm up for it.

54. Lana Del Rey "West Coast"

53. Bastille "Bad Blood"
I hadn't heard this until early 2014 when it was the follow-up to Pompeii in the US, and it quickly became my favorite Bastille song. Love the hint of reggae, and the chorus absolutely soars.

52. Coldplay "A Sky Full Of Stars"

51. The Madden Brothers "We Are Done"

The first of six New Zealand number-ones to feature :heart-old: Good Charlotte is still pretty big down under which helped ensure the Madden brothers' side project would get a hit in at least one part of the world. There is a vague social message in the lyrics which is almost misguided, but the music itself is so laid-back and catchy, making this the summer anthem that never was.

50. Calvin Harris feat. Ayah Marar “Thinking About You”
Calvin’s final single from 18 Months places higher than anything from Motion, oops! “Thinking About You” is one of my faves of his and my love for it carried into early 2014, when the song even entered the Hot 100 and made it to #86. It took me ages to find out that Ayah Marar was also the vocalist on “Flashback”, which was definitely the highlight of “Ready For The Weekend” for me.

49. The Chainsmokers “#Selfie”
Ugh, I think I'm gonna throw up. :puke2: Oh wait, never mind, I'm fine! Let's go dance.

48. Vance Joy “Riptide”
“Riptide” didn’t click with me until I listened with headphones for the first time. There are so many layers of instrumentation and getting to hear all those textures really brings the song to life! Also it helped when summer came around as it was definitely the soundtrack to my vacation <3.

47. Foster The People “Coming Of Age”

46. Pitbull feat. John Ryan “Fireball”

I just realized "Fireball" has cowbell in it. No wonder it's so good!

45. The Preatures “Somebody’s Talking”

My favorite Unknown Pleasures entry as well as my most recent. The Preatures first grabbed my attention with "Is This How You Feel?", and I didn’t think they could possibly record something better, but they did! I love the lead singer's stage presence; it's a little quirky and fun to watch. Actually I discovered this and "Shut Up And Dance" on the exact same day and played one after the other repeatedly for a week or so. It was an incredible week, as you can imagine!

44. Bruno Mars “Young Girls”

43. Christina Perri “Human”

42. The Pretty Reckless “Heaven Knows”

41. 5 Seconds Of Summer “She Looks So Perfect”
This is the second New Zealand number-one to feature :heart-old:. At the time they came out of nowhere and did suspiciously well on pre-orders for a song that hadn't even premiered yet, but thankfully 5SOS delivered with a catchy debut single that lived up to the mysterious amount of hype. Also, "She Looks So Perfect" was the closest we got to an actual rock #1 all year, so bonus points for that!

Yes! Feelin Myself is a huge guilty pleasure for me. I know I shouldn't like it because it is pretty bad but it's just so good at the same time. All of the verses are fantastic and will.i.am's worldplay is always fun but really we all know Miley's verse >>> .

I agree about your Bad Blood commentary, it was the very first song that got me into Bastille back when they weren't huge and my friend introduced me to them and I can't thank her enough now. I remember having it on repeat for ages and thinking 'wow this is fantastic'. Definitely one of their best songs for me, even now.

Thinking About You is a nice Calvin single too, excellent production as usual but I much prefer Sweet Nothing and Drinking From The Bottle and a couple of more singles from the 18 Months era but those two are my favourites.

Hey Jordan, YASS Rather BE. Too low mind :(

60. Clean Bandit feat. Jess Glynne "Rather Be"

58. Demi Lovato "Neon Lights"

56. Walk The Moon "Shut Up And Dance"

55. OneRepublic "I Lived"

54. Lana Del Rey "West Coast"

53. Bastille "Bad Blood"

52. Coldplay "A Sky Full Of Stars"

51. The Madden Brothers "We Are Done"

49. The Chainsmokers “#Selfie” eww this is dreadful, i kinda get the appeal though..

48. Vance Joy “Riptide”

44. Bruno Mars “Young Girls” can't wait for his next album, already getting bored of UF actually :o

43. Christina Perri “Human”

42. The Pretty Reckless “Heaven Knows”

41. 5 Seconds Of Summer “She Looks So Perfect”

Good section, bring on some more tunes Riser :D!

Gosh, this post is very much lacking in commentary but I’ve already pleaded my case on most of these!

40. Chris Brown feat. Usher & Rick Ross “New Flame”

39. Sam Smith “I’m Not The Only One”

38. Sam Smith “Money On My Mind”

I prefer to consider “Money On My Mind” as my favorite of Sam’s, but in reality I’d probably rate it equally with “I’m Not The Only One”, which seems to have a much slower burn rate than the single that preceded it. MOMM is not very well liked for some reason but it’s pretty much everything I wanted in a Sam Smith solo effort. The punchy production and distinct rhythm stand out nicely and made it so interesting to listen to. I hold out hope that the song gets a delayed single release in the States as I’d love to see how well it would perform!

37. Imagine Dragons “On Top Of The World”

36. Meghan Trainor “Lips Are Movin’”

http://i.imgur.com/z8F6314.gif

This is my current #1 and it feels premature to be ranking it among songs I've been loving for a year or more, but this feels about right. There were 10 #1s on Riser Monthly in 2014 and the other nine, needless to say, will be much higher.

35. Dierks Bentley “Drunk On A Plane”

Dierks’ third single from Riser was a surefire country radio hit. In fact he was made to record a few upbeat songs before releasing the album, and I suspect “Drunk On A Plane” was one of them. The video got a lot of attention and is by far his most watched on Youtube, also winning Video of the Year at the CMT Music Awards (which are the country VMAs)! I really wasn’t impressed on first listen, thinking that it sounded forced and definitely out of place on the album. But clearly I stan too hard because the song won me over after hearing it enough times. It was also the clear highlight when I saw Dierks live for the second time, back in September <333

34. American Authors “Believer”

33. Sia “Chandelier”

32. Kiesza “Hideaway”

31. Miley Cyrus “Adore You”

Edited by Riser

Not a fan of MOMM, definitely Sam's weakest tracks. I just don't like the odd lyrics and hideous falsetto in the chorus, he has a nice falsetto, it's just not showcased effectively here. Glad he got his first #1 anyway. I also agree, it'd be every interesting to see how it'd do with a release in the US.

I love that pizza gif and I read the topic when atrl invaded a couple of months ago, it was so funny

I like rather be, neon lights, human, chandelier, hideaway and on top of the world (probably my favourite ID song)

Bad blood is really good (but the newer song called bad blood is way better)

I adore west coast and it is definitely one of my highlights from this year. What is your favourite Lana track?

I love lips are Movin and hope it can smash officially in a couple of weeks

Selfie is horrible though :puke2:

'Hideous falsetto' would me my opinion of Like I Can, but I seem to be alone in thinking that!

My favorite Lana track is Video Games ^_^

30. Ed Sheeran “Sing”
I’m so glad this re-grew on me after being very quick to sound stale. Thankfully Ed Sheeran delivered some serious tunes with his album X, because he also irritated me greatly by pronouncing it as ‘multiply’. His first album + was prounced ‘plus’. Therefore, X should be pronounced ‘times’.

29. G.R.L. “Ugly Heart”
This was definitely among the worst of the year when I first heard it! Most of it’s sung in just one note, and even though the chorus is meant to be more of a chant, it just didn’t work for me. But now it does, being the only song that missed my top 10 to get this far in the countdown. Ugly Heart criminally underperformed in America and didn’t even chart on the Hot 100. Actually G.R.L. had terrible luck around the world: #11 in the UK, #2 in Australia and Ireland, #2 on the Buzzjack Multichart!? I’m sure that’s all trivial to them as nothing could be worse than losing one of your members. :’(

28. Sara Bareilles “I Choose You”

27. Candice Glover “Passenger”

26. Kid Ink feat. Chris Brown “Show Me”

25. Miranda Lambert “Automatic”

24. Becky G “Shower”

23. Jeremih feat. YG “Don’t Tell ‘Em”
Both of Jeremih’s previous hits, Birthday Sex and Down On Me, peaked at #4 on the Hot 100. “Don’t Tell ‘Em” came very close to being his third #4, but peaked at #6. :nocheer:

22. Taylor Swift “Shake It Off”
:hi: Ultraviolence1989

21. Katy Perry “This Is How We Do”
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e261/xpopblog/XPOP_KatyPerry_zpse94f01bc.jpg
Katy knows me so well! Not only is this quickly becoming my fave of hers, the video has pizza AND ice cream! On the downside, I'm still waiting for Buzzjack to shut up about Walking On Air.

http://oi60.tinypic.com/20p96wo.jpg

A bit behind, but :hi: anyway! 'Neon Lights', 'She Looks So Perfect', 'Ugly Heart', 'Shower' and 'Human' All fantastic songs! 5SOS >>>> tho

Loving the countdown so far Jordan! ^_^

Ugly Heart & Shake It Off  fantabulous to see these in your top 30 Jordan :D Sing is regrowing but being overplayed certainly did my head in and that Katy song is one of her worst for me now :( still loving her videos concepts though especially Dark Horse

Edited by Rob S

Sing is fantastic and now firmly one of my faves from Ed although I really like all of his singles. He's really good at upbeat stuff so I'm glad he decided to explore that with his first two singles. Deservedly huge song and whole era for that matter. :funky:

20. Young The Giant “It’s About Time”

19. John Legend “All Of Me”

18. Chris Brown feat. Lil Wayne “Loyal”

17. Pharrell Williams “Happy”
http://24.media.tumblr.com/6ff08e4971135f11b4114b07417d7979/tumblr_mwy1hxQCzb1s3y9slo5_500.gif

16. Katy Perry feat. Juicy J “Dark Horse”
http://www.teen.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/katy-perry-dark-horse-music-video-gifs-2.gif
Two more Riser Monthly #1s drop out (in fact Happy and Dark Horse were consecutive #1s in February and March), and in both cases it’s due to overplay. I’d say they’ve burned out on me equally but hopefully they’ll sound phresh again soon. Happy never felt as massive as it was and it's crazy how much that song has sold. My issue with Dark Horse, it’s a nice looking video but I was expecting something, you know, dark.

15. Colbie Caillat “Hold On”

Hold On is a departure, albeit a very brief one, from the laid-back acoustic-guitar music Colbie is known for. Commercially it went unoticed but as a fan it captured me so instantly in a way her recent output has failed to do. I was thrilled to see Colbie finally triumph again with Try later in the year, but for me Hold On was her moment that never was. But there is one member who shares my love for this song so at least I’m not alone ^_^

14. Dierks Bentley “I Hold On”

Dierks released his seventh album in February, and lead single I Hold On was more powerful than I could ever have imagined. The song was created after the death of his father, and maybe it’s just me being a big fan but I can feel the intensity of emotion put into this track when I listen, and at a certain point in the song I just melt. It’s not just Dierks giving his all here but his entire band. The guitar riff just after the chorus adds volumes to it, plus the bass and rhythm are also at their strongest here. But the vocals do the trick too, and altogether I Hold On is an absolute triumph.

13. DJ Snake & Lil Jon “Turn Down For What”

12. Lorde “Team”

11. Disclosure feat. Sam Smith “Latch”
Never ever EVER did I think Latch would even get pushed in the US, but Disclosure defied my expectations week after week with a very slow climb up the charts until it astonishingly peaked higher than it did in the UK, at #7. At the time I preferred White Noise and You & Me, but hearing Latch on the radio really made me love it ten times more. Still sounds incredible.
Latch is my favourite from Disclosure now. I originally claimed than You & Me was my favourite too but I think that was due to a mixture of the production and Eliza's vocals I think but now this is definitely my favourite. Excited for their comeback!

HELLO. I really got into 'This is How We Do' eventually (including the lovely Grandtheft Remix)... but  i wish she'd release 'Walking On Air' next :)

Great to see some appreciation for 'Loyal' and 'Show Me' and 'Don't Tell Em'! They get far too much hate on here from the swagless posters

Obvious YAYs for 'Chandelier' and 'Ugly Heart' too <3

Just realised I've been quite the flop Riser Recaps fan in not commenting on your top 60 until now. :drama:

Really like your 'I Lived' commentary - I feel similarly and I'm a little bit not at all ashamed to say I've been somewhat ~inspired~ by a sickeningly DULL, MOR, mum-friendly, radio-pandering OneRepublic song. :puke2: :o

Also kind of shocked to see you hated(?) 'Ugly Heart' on first listen but I hadn't really acknowledged the single note thing - interesting.

Love the diversity here. Great to see some urban swag appreciation, as Bal pointed out (particularly 'Loyal' which is a tune and several halves ), among your country faves. Just checked out 'I Hold On' on the strength of what you said and it's a really touching song when you concentrate on the lyrics.

Looking forward to the top 10. :D

Edited by Noahspike

Loving 'Latch' at #11 Jordan! By far my favourite Disclosure single.

Looking forward to your top 10! :D

10. Neon Trees “Sleeping With A Friend”

I’m actually surprised this is top ten as I’ve had far less exposure to it than the songs that are still to come. If anything, that shows just how strong Sleeping With A Friend is, and in fact I cannot fault it except for the troubling fact that so many people haven’t heard it. The video is so charming and rewatchable, and the song is a melodic masterpiece. So many textures going on sound-wise and it’s always a huge pleasure to listen to.

9. Beyoncé feat. JAY Z “Drunk In Love”
tumblr_n0w7ybIn061roc8sco1_500.gif
Merely the latest of many life-changing Beyoncé moments, Drunk In Love was not only the first EVER Riser Monthly #1, but it also handily defeated co-lead single XO in every aspect. Rightfully so, I say. XO never sounded like anything more than a forced attempt at a radio hit, whereas Drunk In Love is more inventive, more inspired, and more genuinely Beyoncé.

8. Ariana Grande feat. Zedd “Break Free”
http://mtv.mtvnimages.com/uri/mgid:file:http:shared:public.articles.mtv.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/break-free-11.gif
This was Ariana’s most instant and most powerful effort for me in her recent leap to pop superstardom. While not bringing anything new to the table, Break Free is just enough of a change from the R&B thing Ariana’s known for, and sometimes all you need is some straight-up dance-pop if it’s delivered this well. I also get picky about an artist releasing too many collabs so it was great that she had the vocals all to herself on this one.

7. Echosmith “Cool Kids”

It’s so rare for me to discover a band on the radio these days, so hearing Cool Kids for the first time took me back to when I didn’t follow music so closely and was introduced to songs the same way as, you know, normal people. I really miss having that experience more regularly! But of course it’s #7 here because of the song itself, which is right up my street. Both the music and lyrics are very daydream-y and the instrumental outro is something I could listen to on loop for ages. Got everything crossed for a UK chart hit

6. Maroon 5 “Animals”
tumblr_ncpvtjJp3t1rjn473o1_500.gif
I’ve been waiting years for this! Maroon 5 have been so meh ever since Moves Like Jagger made them go pop, but after several tries they finally created something as glorious as their old material. Instead of their recent bland radio filler, Animals is pretty aggressive and the hooks are more on point than ever. It wowed me from the very first note and doesn’t miss a beat, and the video is wonderfully over-the-top (but also a little disturbing!). I can only hope that Maroon 5’s redemption lasts for more than one song because this is a sign of a very big return to form.
