Mariah, of course, even though she's been losing her voice :(

I don't even understand, why the Pogues song is considered to be an Xmas song. It's so depressing, but I assume it must be a UK thing :P :heehee:

The first part is a bit depressing but the rest is really quite jolly.

"And the bells were ringing out for Christmas day"

I agree, nothing to do with Christmas.

Just looked it up. I had always thought the tune was based on Tchaikovsky, but apparently it's Prokofiev

Anyway, "I Believe In Father Christmas" not Santa Claus, quite right! has always been one of my Favourites

"Joel The Lump Of Coal" sounds really quite good. A decent new Christmas song. Hope it goes top 40

I voted for The Pogues

Oh yes, Troika from Lieutenant Kije by Sergei Prokofiev. A Christmas must - and without Greg Lake's "psychedelic" vocals too!

I can tell you that Fairytale is #10 and Mariah is #1 on my #XMAS chart, I just don't get the hype on Pogues

Perhaps I'll get 'used to it' as I often do with songs. #Gotye #BlurredLines etc.

It is very British in its wit and style (even though it isn't British), I can see why it appeals to everyone so much bere.

The Pogues and Kirsty are (were) from London, so it's pretty British in that respect! :P Admittedly it does sound more Irish than British though.

Well, you have had 27 years to get used to it so far. Got to kick in eventually.

As for whether Fairy Tale of New York is about Christmas - it's as much about Christmas as AIWFCIY as it's a story set at Christmas Eve as opposed to a list of things that a girl does and doesn't want accompanied by some sleigh bells. It's just not so obvious.

27 years?

Well perhaps it's the genre I prefer more dance/electric type songs anyway. :P

Mariah in the lead like a true Queen *.*

Sry your late attempt at rigging this is not legitimate ~ The Pogues already won.

Just had a thought. Would the Pogues song be as popular if Kirsty hadn't died I wonder?

I'm 100% certain it would be, I always remembered this song being just as omnipresent at Christmas time before that tragic event.

It's literally 50/50 as I type :o I never thought this was such a divisive topic, serving them scotland referendum teas~

Mariah taking that lead! *.*

I have to say I can't really recall having heard 'Fairytale of New York' prior to its 2005 re-release. I probably did, but didn't pay it much attention until it was back in the charts & an annual re-entry. I eventually downloaded it legally in December 2007 (don't tell Bré x).
