'Steal My Girl' was the lead single from the 'FOUR' era which started out with a rather concerning lack of hype, it initially only managed a single week in the top 10 at number three. Syco seem to know what they're doing with 1D though and the song made a big recovery with well timed music video and X Factor performance, turning the song into a fairly respectable hit. It's the only 1D lead single to date that I've actually liked and my second favourite song of theirs overall, after 'Little Things' (unpopular opinion). However, it continued the 1D lead single tradition of completely ripping off another song - in this case it's ABBA's 'The Winner Takes It All'. Katy B's second era seemed to start out with a bit of a flop in 'What Love Is Made Of' which only got to #21 in 2013. That ended up not making the album at all, but the proper first single '5 AM' didn't do that much better, reaching #14. She did manage a properly big hit with the second single 'Crying For No Reason' though which gave her a third top 5 hit (spending two non-consecutive weeks at #5) and the album 'Little Red' went to #1 so all in all a fairly successful era. 'Crying For No Reason' is a very good song but even so I've always felt it's a LITTLE overrated on this site. Cheryl [Cole]'s first #1 of the year finishes a lot higher than the second, 'Crazy Stupid Love' proved that the public was still very much interested in her even after a bit of a wait since the last album and no presence on the X Factor for several years. Not sure how exactly as it was a very unimpressive song but there you go. Bonus points for giving Tinie Tempah a second #1 in 2014, with his presence on both songs being pretty pointless. Finally at #71 is another heavily saxophone-featuring song, 'Changes' by FAUL and Wad Ad vs. Pnau. This was another song that was a hit in BJSC before it was in the real world and for me it's one of the songs I'm most pleased to have seen cross over, a massive feel-good summer tune. It was unfortunately slightly usurped by another massively inferior BJSC-turned-UK sax-dance hit (an absurdly specific description to match two different songs), 'Jubel' which is still to come. A third sax-dance hit (albeit one that wasn't in BJSC), the lesser hit 'One Day (Vandaag)' by Bakermat, sadly fell just short of the top 200 here.

Damn. He comes in at #70 anyway with Emma Louise on My Head Is a Jungle, which charted thanks to MK's remix of the track. Never have I heard a nice voice being put to a more annoying use than in this song. Double will.i.am in this section, a huge Buzzjack favourite of course. He appears first with Cody Wise at #69 on #1 single It's My Birthday, which made good use of a quiet week to nab a week at #1 but proved to be a decent enough seller. It's a fantastic track IMO and a whole load of fun. Lyrically shit but that goes for every will.i.am song. It's My Birthday is beaten by will's earlier #2 hit Feelin' Myself featuring many people. This turned out to be a big grower for me and again, it's just a lot of fun. Poor will gets too much hate on Buzzjack. Thankfully, he returns to our TV screens this Saturday to coach The Voice *.* Dope. Passenger is at #67 with huge 2013 hit (and points chart #1) Let Her Go, which spent most of the year in the top 100 like a true slayer. I'd like to dedicate this commentary to Ball who is the biggest Smashenger fan on the entire site. Finally, one of the best tracks of the year is at #68. G.R.L. released their debut single in the UK just mere days before member Simone Battle committed suicide, also just one day before it charted in the UK. It was extremely sad news especially when things were looking so good for the group. Thankfully, they are still continuing but as a four-piece now and hopefully 2015 can be their year. Ugly Heart is pop perfection and its #11 peak was beyond cruel.

(Haha, isn't it funny when people/songs sound like other people/songs). In all seriousness though, #65 is Imagine Dragons' 'Demons' which proved to be a bigger hit than previous post-album singles 'It's Time' and 'On Top Of The World'. It actually came very close to matching the peak of 'Radioactive'. Ariana Grande is next up with a track that would probably be a few places higher had the OCC changed their instant grat rules a bit earlier, unforch for her and Zedd 'Break Free' was ineligible for a few weeks and potentially missed out on a top 10 peak thanks to that, but the song still did respectably enough. I'm not sure how good an idea it was for her to release a generic dance track when she's otherwise trying to build an image as a sort of Mariah-esque urban pop act but there you go. David Guetta's only single of the year to not go top 5 (in fact not even going top 20) is confusingly his highest placed song here, 'Bad' proved to be an unexpected longevity king perhaps thanks to being used in an advert of some kind. It was nice to see Showtek getting another biggish hit after the bonkers and brilliant 'Booyah', 'Bad' isn't quite as good but still fairly decent and the second best of the singles from 'Listen'. DJ Snake provided one of the year's most hilarious music videos with the clip for 'Turn Down For What', the song itself is something you either love or think is a total racket, I personally love it. And Lil Jon getting a hit again! That's a blast from the past ~ Finally we come to drum n bass act Sigma's second EVER UK #1 http://profile.ak.fbcdn.net/hprofile-ak-xpa1/t5.0-1/41787_138659892838767_2273_q.jpg which was also featured artist Paloma Faith's first EVER UK #1 http://profile.ak.fbcdn.net/hprofile-ak-xpa1/t5.0-1/41787_138659892838767_2273_q.jpg 'Changing' is one of the more egregious examples of songs that were just held back far too long, I was practically over it by the time it came out (although it's grown back on me a bit since). It didn't affect its longevity too much though, matching the 6 top 10 weeks of 'Nobody To Love'.

Charli XCX's solo breakthrough hit kicks off the top 60. Before this, she'd of course featured on Iggy Azalea's Fancy, and done something to warrant a credit on Icona Pop's I Love It. Boom Clap was her first solo venture into the top 40, and top 10 in fact as Boom Clap charted at #6. The track held up pretty well and at some points in its chart life was ahead of Cheryl's Crazy Stupid Love, which was released the same week and went to #1. In fact, it's ahead in this countdown too. Poor Chezza. Follow-up single Break the Rules did less good, much to Aly's dismay. Irish singer/songwriter Andrew Hozier-Byrne, simply known as Hozier, reached the top 10 for the first time with sleeper hit Take Me To Church in the first week of 2015. However, as this is the points chart of 2014, it cuts off the week before. Take Me To Church spent 15 weeks in the top 40 in 2014, without ever making it higher than #20. The track was brought to the attention of many Buzzjackers through gooddelta in BJSC, if you hadn't noticed already :heehee: Speaking of BJSC, a former Ryan entry beats Hozier and is at #58. Jubel charted and peaked at #3 in its first week, behind Secondcity's I Wanna Feel, which is considerably lower in this countdown. Jubel had an impressive top 40 run and even more impressive top 100 longevity for what didn't feel like THAT big a hit. Having less good top 100 longevity however is Jason Derulo's Trumpets, a song which hovered in the top 40 for way too long but didn't seem to stick around for too long after, I personally expected it to be higher than #57. The song started off quite fun but got annoying quickly. Indirectly calling Kanye West an "ass" still gets me though. Speaking of asses, Jessie J is at #56 with Ari and Nicki, as their collaboration single makes it to #56. The track was Nicki's first EVER UK #1 http://profile.ak.fbcdn.net/hprofile-ak-xpa1/t5.0-1/41787_138659892838767_2273_q.jpg as well as being Ariana's second and Jessie's third. Jessie's done nothing else of note this era because 1) the budget was blown on Ari and Nicki and 2) the singles that have been picked since have been underwhelming anyway. Shame as I quite like her music and Sweet Talker's not a bad album.

It managed to keep up their streak of getting a top 5 hit from each of their albums, reaching #3 (at one stage in its opening week it was actually looking like potentially being a shock second #1 for them, but it ultimately couldn't overhaul Lilly Wood & The Prick's second week or even Duke Dumont's 'Won't Look Back'). I initially strongly disliked the song but it's grown on me in a weird way. Maybe it's just because every day every hour they turn the pain into POWAH. Gorgon City and MNEK seemed like they had a contender for the #1 spot with 'Ready For Your Love', ultimately missing the top 3 but redeeming themselves with longevity to rival the biggest of the hits in the recent deep house wave. It's by far the biggest song from both artists, Gorgon City have followed it up with a trio of minor top 20 hits while MNEK could only muster up a #66 hit with his own single 'Wrote A Song About You' despite predictions for him to blow up majorly in 2014. Maybe it'll still happen one day. Black culture appropriating devil spawn Iggy Azalea collaborated with the UK's second most pointless popstar on 'Black Widow' (a shameless ripoff of Katy Perry's 'Dark Horse' - although I actually love that song so I can't help but quite like Iggy's version too) which surprisingly continued her run of improving peaks release-on-release by going a place higher than 'Fancy'. That run was shattered when 'Beg For It' failed to make the top 100. Flop. Speaking of Katy Perry the world's biggest popstar™ herself falls just short of being in the top 50 for a second straight year with her monster 2013 #1 hit 'Roar'. In between Katy Perry and her tribute act we have 'Love Never Felt So Good', the second attempt at a posthumous lead single by Michael Jackson. The first album of previously unreleased material to surface after the King's passing, 'Michael', was not received too kindly among critics and fans but the follow-up 'Xscape' was much more accepted. I haven't heard much of either album beyond the two top 10 hits they produced but 'Love Never Felt So Good' was certainly a hell of a lot better than 'Hold My Hand', it has all the feeling of a Jacko classic (and why shouldn't it as it was recorded when he was right at the top of his game). A vocal touchup by Justin Timberlake helped the song to outpeak 'Hold My Hand' and have a much better chart run overall. Long live the King.

The track was given what was basically an OA/OS release, and proved to be a good move for Calvin as it shot straight to #1 and had a very good chart run following it, although looking at that chart run, it doesn't look particularly like an OA/OS release would, perhaps because airplay began right from the first week it was on sale. Blame became the third #1 for Calvin in a row, and John Newman's third overall (how??). BLEHM IT ON THE NARGHHHHTT, NARGHHHHT. http://a1.mzstatic.com/eu/r30/Music/v4/9b/bc/67/9bbc674f-6c7f-d1a4-204f-ccb455c73dde/cover170x170.jpeg 49 ~ (75-67-53-33-1-1-1-1-2-3-5-11-10-11-13-10-7-...) 1413pts ~ 17wks Up next is the song about the bum! http://profile.ak.fbcdn.net/hprofile-ak-xpa1/t5.0-1/41787_138659892838767_2273_q.jpg Meghan Trainor's debut smash All About That Bass became the first song to make the top 40 on streams alone earlier this year, before shooting straight up to #1 when released as a download. The track speaks about not worrying about your weight although has been controversial as people interpret the song differently. The track has had good staying power in and around the top 10 since its release and #49 feels low for it but alas, it was a release that occurred late in the year. Oh and Meghan is OBSESSED with her bottom! http://profile.ak.fbcdn.net/hprofile-ak-xpa1/t5.0-1/41787_138659892838767_2273_q.jpg ~ Albums http://a2.mzstatic.com/eu/r30/Music3/v4/59/40/9d/59409d3a-c16c-98b3-022b-9169e195cb47/cover170x170.jpeg 50 ~ The Script - No Sound Without Silence (1-7-6-6-11-16-15-9-15-17-15-18-18-17-16-...) 1328pts ~ 15wks Tracks in singles list: 55 Superheroes 256 No Good In Goodbye 484 It's Not Right For You I was quite gutted when I saw that Bray got Superheroes in his section as I wanted to discuss the POWAH but I get to do so for the album instead *.* I have not listened to the album and have absolutely no intention of doing so but Superheroes has become quite the guilty pleasure for me. I'm not really sure why I like it as I'm no big fan of theirs and never have been but it's an awful lot of fun, mainly for the POWAH parts more than anything else. The album had a bit of a tumble from #1 at first but recovered extremely well, not leaving the top 20 in the 15 weeks to the end of the year. The staying POWAH is real. http://a1.mzstatic.com/eu/r30/Music6/v4/fe/39/fe/fe39fec1-6354-b580-214c-9c0a4c73fda6/cover170x170.jpeg 49 ~ The Killers - Direct Hits (...-17-21-24-27-34-49-45-60-52-52-40-54-86-91-100-67-71-91-98-69-64-55-68-60-62-84-x(1)-97-98-99-80-64-53-26-62-80-x) 1335pts ~ 35wks Tracks in singles list: 357 Mr. Brightside Released in late 2013, The Killers' Greatest Hits album continued to sell well during 2014, spending 35 out of 52 weeks in the top 100, almost all consecutively! All this without making much of a dent on the singles chart all year, just Mr. Brightside which feels very omnipresent anyway. The album peaked at #17 for the year and spent 7 of its top 100 weeks in the top 40, not bad going. Oh and I like how the artwork and title actually link *.*

At the time that was enough to make her joint as the British female soloist with the most #1s (ignoring that she was born in then Yugoslavia now Kosovo), though of course that record is no longer valid. She may still match Cheryl again though with her conveniently timed next single as she debuts as a judge on The Voice UK. Back to those rumours, this song was written and produced by her now ex-boyfriend Calvin Harris, but just around the time of its release they split up in a way that was apparently not too amicable, as it led to massive delays in Rita's second album (presumably it was going to be an all-Calvin affair but he wasn't cool with that any more - as shown by the hilare incident where Rita was blocked from performing this song at an awards ceremony when Calvin, who has rights to the song as its writer, refused her permission at the last second). I think there's some letting down going on there. The song itself is a fairly decent dance pop track, not Calvin's best work but not awful either. http://a3.mzstatic.com/eu/r30/Music3/v4/ca/fb/7e/cafb7e7a-5d16-3003-ce86-1d10cea42851/cover170x170.jpeg 47 ~ (1-1-2-3-5-8-11-14-13-15-17-24-43-45-48-42-50-55-...) 1421pts ~ 18wks I wrote too much about the last song so I'll keep this one brief. 'Prayer In C', the song that iTunes couldn't decide how to credit (it was literally changed about ten times, each time getting more and more ridiculous), was revived from complete obscurity as Robin Schulz released his remix shortly after his one for Mr Probz' 'Waves', both songs becoming big #1s, though this one less so than 'Waves'. Deservedly as it's not as good. Did you know Lilly Wood is not one person (as their ACTUAL http://profile.ak.fbcdn.net/hprofile-ak-xpa1/t5.0-1/41787_138659892838767_2273_q.jpg name suggests) but a duo who met in a Parisian café? http://profile.ak.fbcdn.net/hprofile-ak-xpa1/t5.0-1/41787_138659892838767_2273_q.jpg ~ Albums http://a1.mzstatic.com/eu/r30/Music5/v4/4d/7f/54/4d7f542e-a9bf-bb07-11ba-ed81607b75fb/cover170x170.jpeg 48 ~ Barbra Streisand - Partners (2-2-5-4-7-9-12-11-13-16-11-11-12-9-12-...) 1379pts ~ 15wks Tracks in singles list: none And I have even less to say about this one. Released in the same week as The Script's album, Barbra Streisand (wooOOooOOooOOooOOooOOoo) had a surprisingly huge hit album with her latest release, a duets album if you couldn't guess from the title. Unfortunately for Babz it couldn't quite get to #1. WD nonetheless. http://a1.mzstatic.com/eu/r30/Music/v4/16/69/7c/16697ce7-66af-b8a3-88c1-775241ae1faa/cover170x170.jpeg 47 ~ Little Mix - Salute (...-32-33-29-30-38-43-48-49-54-63-68-78-100-83-98-99-54-58-64-61-45-49-42-32-29-33-47-49-59-78-89-89-97-x) 1413pts ~ 33wks Tracks in singles list: 103 Salute 156 Little Me 157 Move The second album from X Factor winning girlgroup Little Mix, 'Salute' actually managed to beat the top 100 longevity of 'DNA' quite comfortably although its overall sales were a bit down on the debut as you'd expect. Two pretty big post-album singles (and, er, 'Word Up!' I guess) kept 'Salute' ticking throughout over half of 2014, hitting a high for the year of #29 first at the very start of the year and then again several months later. The album also received a delayed US release in early 2014 and reached number 6, making it 2/2 top 10 albums for them, quite the feat considering they're still yet to get a notable hit single there.

The track, which features Sean Paul, is my personal favourite Fuse track. Completely irresistible and SO much fun. Quite impressive that he didn't just manage to outpeak Antenna for the SECOND time, but actually bettered it in terms of longevity and most likely sales too (although that's not a fact I've checked so I could be wrong lol). Oh and I can't do commentary for this song without mentioning the fact that there's like a whole minute dedicated to Fuse's catchphrases. IT'S FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUSE, Mr Hackett, Killbeatz let's go, IT'S A WORLDWIDE MOVEMENT, it's OFF DA GROUND and others all feature, before the best part - OH NO NO NO NO EHHHHH, TINAAAAAAAAAA NA NA NA NA EHHHHHHH *.* http://i.imgur.com/Pwr5XuY.png 45 ~ (10-18-23-20-22-23-24-20-13-17-21-24-29-34-46-50-65-54-60-66-71-88-87-90-95-x) 1455pts ~ 25wks I need to be careful here because I'm aware there are many Coldplay fans on Buzzjack and I'm not one of them at all. I think Chris Martin has a very dull, uninteresting voice and Magic is quite possibly the dullest Coldplay song I've heard. Obviously each to their own though and I guess I see why it proved to be a long-lasting hit. Was actually a bigger hit than I remember it being :o Magic was released the same week as Lily Allen's Air Balloon, and whilst the latter outpeaked the former, Lily wasn't too happy about it. Via supporting One Direction live, Australians 5 Seconds Of Summer managed to build up a pretty massive fanbase in the UK (as well as elsewhere in the world) before they'd even released one song. Indeed, the EP pre-order for their first single 'She Looks So Perfect' got to #1 on UK iTunes and the single pre-order also made the top 20. All of that support was more than enough for the song to reach #1 and although it ultimately became a fairly popular song, it took a couple of weeks to properly reach beyond the fanbase leading to that infamous 1-10 drop in its second week. Flop. It's a pretty unremarkable song, a bit of a grower perhaps but one of the weakest #1s of the year for me. It was also the last #1 before the introduction of streaming into the charts (being knocked off by 'Problem' incidentally) which grants it a bit of notability. Initially it looked like it might have needed that as a 1-5 drop wasn't a great start but it ended up with a fairly good chart run and Oliver wasn't even a one hit wonder, following it up with a second top 5 hit in 'Last All Night (Koala)'. The album cover also seems to be annoyingly JPEG-y everywhere I've seen it. In another presumably artistic move all the song titles were stylised in all lower case. All of this wasn't massively offputting though as it was another very successful era for them, a fourth straight #1 album out of 5 releases and led by 'eez-eh' which was perhaps their biggest hit single since 'Fire'. Kasabian are a band I tend to quite like but don't really pay attention to that much.

However, unlike similar acts, Tove managed a major breakthrough with this remix of her song 'Habits' by Hippie Sabotage. I am in a minority on this site that thinks the remix is much better than the original. That's not to say I dislike the original 'Habits' - I do like it a lot - but 'Stay High' was one of my favourite songs of the year, taking all the best parts of the original and cutting out the slightly less essential parts while having much better production to push a good song into greatness. Her follow-up single 'Not On Drugs' failed to gain traction and its release was cancelled but she has been back in the top 10 in the last couple of weeks featuring on Alesso's 'Heroes (we could be)', which is nowhere near as good.
