Great start for Sam Smith. I was ever so slightly worried that it'd under perform on streaming this week; but it looks to be doing fine.

 

Naughty Boy, Little Mix and Sia all pretty low though - not sure if any of them will make the T10 this week.

I don't get why people are still streaming 'Lean On' so much, compared to other big singles released around the same time as that.

poor Belgian hens still have 'Lean On' at #4 in their chart :')

Lean On has such a wide appeal though - barely know anybody who hates this song. Of all the other summer hits that spring to mind, only Cheerleader, Want To Want Me and Can't Feel My Face have similar appeal amongst people I know.

 

Songs like See You Again, Trap Queen, Not Letting Go & Freak Of The Week are popular but they won't get played on stations like Heart or Radio 2. Whereas Lean On has literally been everywhere, all over the world.

Jack has a very valid point though, a lot of people who stream seem to either be behind a few months or can't seem to let go of songs that are months old and thus it makes it stagnant, stale and tiresome (as good as the songs may be).

 

I think in comparison to this time last year the streaming chart has got a bit more up to date/faster though, so it should hopefully continue to be that way and hopefully be more "on the pulse" and not 3-4 months behind. I remember when downloads first started being included it was the same way and gradually changed.

But it will still be lagging behind, as even if you start listening up-to-date music you'll still be able to listen to older music for months and months and thus affect the chart.

 

Tbh I'm all for "hype streaming chart" or something like these lines, where only first stream of a song is counted. But I guess it is not easy to make it technically, or we need only to count authorised streams where we can track whether a person has streamed the track for the first time or not.
