Hanson: "MMMBop" is probably the first song I can remember from the time it was a hit (as opposed to the Whitney songs my mom played which would've been a decade-plus old by then). The only other song of theirs I've heard is "Penny & Me", which my older sister liked a lot in 2004 (and, thus, which I liked a lot also).

Atomic Kitten: They made no mark on the US charts, but weirdly enough I remember the video for "The Tide Is High" being played here frequently on Disney Channel, which was probably the most exposure they received here (and the only reason I had any idea who they were, tbh)

Hey, how did I miss Tiffany at number 33?

Surprised to see Disclosure and Rizzle Kicks so high, but it goes to show you how well records are selling at the moment.

Amazed to see how big Ella is! #20 is huge for someone who just entered the business last year and actually ended up 6th in X Factor (behind Rylan for example, wtf). Even if it's mostly just thanks to "Ghost", but still.

I think in a chart like this it doesn't matter how recent their success is because the cut-off point of 20 years applies to everyone. Someone making this chart from 30 years ago won't be benefiting from 30 years of sales, just whatever sales they had up to the age of 20.

That's not to dismiss your point about her only coming 6th in X-Factor - given her success in that competition she really has done well, and pretty much deserves her success in 2014 on account of her vocal talent.

Ah, but Ella is not yet 20, so she has just short of a year to potentially accumulate more, not that I know if she'll be able to do that.

17. MUSICAL YOUTH (1,242,000) 7 HITS

A band broken by Radio 1 DJ John Peel, these loveable school kids most famously sung “Pass The Dutchie” which is a song not without its connotations which wasn’t perhaps the most appropriate song to be sung by the group but in the 80s it was a different world. The song also made the US top 10 making the band the first black act to be played on MTV, subsequent releases didn’t fare so far as the group were curtailed on how much promo they could undertake as they were kids and were prohibited by law at that point, at least that’s what they blame.....

16. CHIPMUNK (1,354,000) 9 HITS

Whatever happened to Chipmunk? Apparently he’s now called just “Chip”, but he hasn’t made the charts since 2011 as lead act. Back when he was a teenager however he was quite the hitmaker scoring a No 1 with “Oopsy Daisy” and introducing us to Emeli Sande. He’s now signed to T.I’s label who advised him to shorten his name hence “Chip”.

Chip featured on Wiley's 2013 single "Reload" which made it to No. 9, but since then he's been pretty much a ghost :(

15. PIXIE LOTT (1,368,000) 8 HITS

Pixie was supporting the Saturdays on tour when she scored her first No 1 single “Mama Do” which was co-written by Phil Thornalley (also co-writer of Imbruglia’s “Torn”) who was formerly in 80s band Johnny Hates Jazz. He would go on to co-write and co-producer Lott’s first three singles including her second No 1 single “Boys & Girls” which created chart history for the biggest “official” (within the top 75) leap to No 1 when it powered 73-1 in September 2009.

14. LEANN RIMES (1,505,000) 8 HITS

She may have had 8 hits in her teens but it’s mainly the megahits “Can’t Fight The Moonlight” and “How Do I Live” that make up this total (1.2 million between them). She was the most immediate blueprint of the Taylor Swift road to international success, first album country, second album into country pop, and it worked a treat with “How Do I Live” becoming the first song in pop history to peak higher in the year end chart (6) than it ever did in the weekly charts (7).

13. FIVE (1,558,000) 6 HITS

Formed by Simon Fuller and with Cowell’s guiding hand Five were basically a male version of The Spice Girls, or an East 17 to Boyzone’s Take That if you prefer. Thanks to the “Big Reunion” we know that the group were plagued with in fighting and bullying accusations but they were a highly effective band in delivering top 10 hits and clearly sales. Although the chart toppers arrived after their “teen” period all those 6 hits were top 10 hits with only debut “Slam Dunk (Da Funk)” selling less than 200,000 copies.

LeeAnn Rimes

All the feels

Spice Girls would have done so well in this if it wasn't for Geri, 56, Halliwell.

Uncustomarily bitchy.

They wouldn't have qualified, Emma's the youngest and she was 20 when Wannabe was released.

Five = Loved them back in the day ever since Slam Dunk Da Funk (which will always be a guilty pleasure of mine), plus their first album singles were excellent = When The Lights Go Out, Got The Feelin', Everybody Get Up and Until The Time Is Through were all amazing. They ended too soon in my opinion, Let's Dance was another fave of mine from them.

Leann Rimes = Always loved "How Do I Live" such an excellent and timeless classic as well as "Can't Fight The Moonlight", plus she's had some other greats = Life Goes On, Commitment and And It Feels Like

LOVED 5ive! I'm pretty sure I spent a good deal of the time between the ages of 8-11 begging to have my hair done like Scott's spikes.

Also - correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't it Bob and Chris Herbert, the Spice Girls' original managers who formed them?

I thought that too, they were on Simon Cowbell's BMG label though
