Posted February 17, 201510 yr It's a fair question when you know that 2 years ago he was nothing and he's now the first in history to do 3 concerts at wembley arena in a row! Needless to say he has a huge talent though: check out his concert in Zürich http://www.evergig.com/concerts/2015/01/28...rich/Ed_Sheeran http://cdn1.viagogo.net/img/cat/21043/1/17.jpg
February 17, 201510 yr More seriously 'two years ago he was nothing'?!!????!!?,? He's already had a million selling single by then!
February 17, 201510 yr He's okay. Not offensive to my ears, but not good enough to make me want to buy his music. But I don't understand why he is so special. There are many acousticy male singer songwriters of the same vibe/talent.
February 17, 201510 yr Well MOR is very in right now and that makes up a large quantity of his material so in that sense he 'deserves' it? Personally until overplayed kicked in I was huge on the stuff on 'x' like 'Sing' and 'Don't' and while he needs to disappear for about four years Adele style for me to appreciate his stuff again properly, of course he 'deserves' it. No more than anyone else just because he had a 'rough start' or whatever, but because he clearly is doing something right musically. Also he was huge a couple of years ago, unless you mean in terms of his first EVER number one. :jameela: Edited February 17, 201510 yr by Jade
February 17, 201510 yr No, he definitely doesn't deserve the success he has received. He is quite bland and very average at best. Only a few songs that I like of his and couldn't stand listening to an entire album as it would bore me.
February 17, 201510 yr No way. His music is so non-descript. Some of it may be "nice" but it's all just easy listening radio catered nothing. I'd rather my artists had more than just being "nice".
February 17, 201510 yr I hate the way when describing his rise to fame they concentrate on his struggle to fill early gigs (a paid gig in Exeter that nobody - that's zero people - turned up to in 2008 for example) as if it's some sort of unique situation, when that's exactly how ALL ARTISTS make it. All success (bar X-Factor which never lasts anyway) takes a lot of time and effort to achieve.
February 17, 201510 yr I wouldn't say he doesn't deserve it, however he is hugely overrated. I don't see him doing anything that hasn't done before that has either gone under appreciated or just not had the impact he has.
February 17, 201510 yr I like him as a person, and it's a rare UK sales success world-wide, so yes he deserves it. I don't personally rate most of his ballads, and the way the charts are structured now means acts like him dominate over prolongued periods multiple times, and that most certainly isn't deserved. Just cos a core large group of people on streaming sites love him doesnt mean he should hang around forever, ditto Sam Smith.
February 17, 201510 yr Whether someone "deserves" success or not is quite tricky really. There's a lot of different factors to it and surely making radio-friendly MOR doesn't mean he doesn't deserve success? I'm glad he's doing so well anyway and I'm a big fan, overplay hasn't killed his songs for me at all either.
February 17, 201510 yr He does deserve success his music is popular for a reason, anyone know's I don't get how people can say he doesn't I believe anyone deserves success in their industry IMO Edited February 17, 201510 yr by harryflynn0908
February 17, 201510 yr I think the opening post was more questioning the scale of his success rather than him having any success whatsoever. Though I don't personally rate him, it would be difficult to argue against his success being deserved. He clearly appeals to a very wide section of the population by being rather inoffensive, bland and MOR.
February 17, 201510 yr I wouldn't say he doesn't 'deserve' it in the traditional sense of that term just because I don't like his music. It's not like he asked for this huge success or that he's a convicted criminal or some vile celeb looking to increase their profile by recording a song and he does write/play all his own stuff, which I respect. And, as been said, he's done everything right this time and has attracted wide appeal. I'm not a big fan though, something about his voice goes right through me and most of what I've heard/is the most successful for him is just very uninteresting MOR slush, and even his 'edgier' moments like Sing, Don't or You Need Me... don't exactly sound original (the former in particular sounds like a Justin Timberlake reject) and I'm at the stage I can't stand any of them so just switch off when I hear them on the radio. His MSP just doesn't appeal to me musically, but I understand his appeal and success and don't begrudge him it. Edited February 17, 201510 yr by Chez Wombat
Off-topic but I would say leaving home for London at 16 and not having a roof over his head for years/sleeping on the underground/asking those who turn up to his gigs if anyone has a couch for the night is relatively uncommon! Assuming all of that is true of course, but I know someone who knew him from his early teens and verified most of it. I think his struggle was more noteworthy than the norm for a successful artist.
February 17, 201510 yr I enjoy that he has success and I would say that he deserves it. He definitely seems to care about the industry a fair bit, he seems to be a great guy, and for someone who's musical destiny was clearly to be the 'credible' boy with guitar he has his fair share of interesting moments, Sing and Don't aren't usual MOR hits, it's only because they've stuck around far longer than they should have that they seem that way, and I do rank him above many similar artists for having a few different styles of song to vary between. His hits from this album have definitely outstayed their welcome but he's just as an essential part of the music industry as any more traditional popstar.
February 17, 201510 yr He's definitely worked hard for what he's achieved and knows how to write a song with mass appeal and can sing/perform live well so for that he deserves success. And I'm not a fan of all his songs (Thinking Out Loud in particular I find overrated)
February 17, 201510 yr No, but then I don't think any music I hate deserves success so I'm never going to be able to be unbiased. Music is just something too important to me.
February 17, 201510 yr I rate his second era a lot higher than his first, although I didn't mind him too much the first time around. For me there have been much more offensive artists than him to get that level of success over the years. Sam Smith is far more boring than he is anyway.
