30th July 1995   I like a nice bit of cheese now and again, so I proudly announce Deuce top my chart this week in 1995 with a fab OTT slab, all melodramatic and passionately tuneful. By some distance

well I'm running behind on these charts - it's been 5 years since covid and my last transfer of pencil and pad charts to digital for 1995 and I'm yet to re-visit them in a literal "playing all the ones I don't remember" sense - so much music, so little time, has been my lifelong motto but it seems to get ever relevant as the back-catalogue of the history of music increases exponentially thanks to the internet. So anyway here's yet another one pushed up the list to "current".....

24th September 1995

It's a 3rd week on top for Simply Red's fab Fairground, holding off Mariah Carey's Tom Tom Club sample and just to underline my utter lack of street-cred Michael Bolton climbs to 3 with Can I Touch You...There. Unlike many pop stars of the time, he at least asked permission, and this was easily the highest-charting of The Foghorn for me, Michael is at his best when he's not going OTT and concentrates on selling a song with restraint, starting with a Carly Simon Chic-tastic riff nick at the intro. Very much his best record, almost soul shuffle. Meanwhile Danielle Briseboix's lovely version of Brenton Wood's fab Gimme Little Sign makes my top 10 27 years on from Brenton's version would have - if I'd started my personal charts 6 months earlier, doh! Nick Heyward's hits were almost a decade ago, but he's still charting big with me then and now - The World at 10. Nick is touring with Haircut 100 in 2025 and just had a terrific 80's-stylee new track last year, The Unloving Plum. That and this are jangly guitar pop.

Highest new entry - due to the B side cover of Sam Cooke's classic A Change Is Gonna Come - is Morten Harket's Xmas single, I just bought it and was gob-smacked by his sparse, church-recorded (it seems) cover, much better than the new track. In at 19. Sister Bliss is AOL from Faithless, on the fab Oh! What A World, very Wicked Witch in Oz! Great dance track. In nostalgia corner Utah Saints do an unlikely remix of The Osmonds Crazy Horses, as popular opinion starts to agree that Crazy Horses is a bloody great record even if 13-year-old girls were supposedly the target audience in 1972 (they really weren't). New at 27, just ahead of an amazing and unlikely Aussie collab between dark Nick Cave, and popstress Kylie, now well into her Indie Kylie phase on Where The Wild Roses Grow, about as dark as a song can get thanks to the macabre video. It's also fantastic.

Brownstone are back, and with what seems to be a sultry cover of an Eagles song I've forgotten. In at 30, and I play it to confirm that is indeed what it is, while at 33 Dubstar return with a good track, Anywhere, and Cast start off their chart career with a bang that was never to repeat quite as much in pop culture - though they gave it a good ol' go into the 2000's. Alright at 34, and it really is an under-rated Britpop goodie. Bitty McLean's hits are getting less and less by this time, but hey it's reggae and I like Bitty's upbeat brand, albeit a liitle more laid-back and jazzy on Nothing Can Change This Love for a second Sam Cooke lush song in my chart. Quality. Haddaway's back at 39, playing it now and it doesnt ring a bell, but it's uptempo dancepop, and not bad, ahead of Thunder covering Python Lee Jackson's big 1972 hit as sung by Rod Stewart. I saw Thunder in concert, they could rock it.

And the new entries keep on a-coming in this bumper week, EYC enter at 60 with one Ive forgotten as well, It's Ooh-ah-OK, PJ & Duncan keep the hits coming on U Krazy Kats at 41, still a few years off dominating Light Entertainment for the 21st Century UK TV as Ant & Dec, The Manics pop back in again with their Bacharach cover, the 4th version to chart, none of them beating BJ Thomas' movie featuring classic. Paul Weller's in at 50 with Broken Stones, for an 18th year of hits, but I wouldnt call it one of his many classics - it's decent retro-soul though.

It's 4 years since Baby Baby, but Amy Grant keeps coming back - this time with Country star Vince Gill - on the fairly downbeat, but pleasant, House Of Love at 66 just ahead of Wet Wet Wet in Year 8 of plodding ballads, Somewhere Somehow in my chart anyway. Natalie Merchant, ex-10,000 Maniacs, is always worth a listen, even these days, and Carnival isn't bad at 69, but with more legs is anything Tears For Fears, new at 70 with the oddly titled Raoul And The Kings Of Spain. TFF still top my charts 30 years later with the odd obscure but classic track, Roland and Curt back together again, and deserve more airplay than they get.

M People have a Love Rendezvous at 71, not one of their bigger ones, but they are always pretty decent at the least, Boo Radleys, in at 73 sat on a low-key bench, and we have a solo Louise popping in with Light Of My Life, having escaped from Eternal after suffering being ignored on US R'n'B stations on the rounds of interviews - to be fair her voice could never be called soulful, but it is pleasant, and she has never ever wailed out of tune excessively on record so strike one up for her there. And finally Mary J. Blige is as Mary Jane drops in at 75 - now Ms. Blige knows how to sing, and she knows how to act too, I'm a fan of either version. Her sweet retro soul is always fine by me anytime, and this is rather nice n classy, and borrowing the Mary Jane Girls 80's hit to boot.

I'm surprised by huge success of Deuce "On The Bible" here.

Beautiful South - Dream A Little Dream was my # 1 for a whole month in October. This track was a single only in Switzerland, so became legal for my chart.

John, did you listen/charted Me and My - Dub-I-Dub? It was a European hit.

Oh I absolutely love On The Bible, classic forgotten pop track I will defend to the end 🥰😇

Dream A Little Dream should have been a single everywhere! Good version of a 60's classic I was mad on as a kid of 10.

Listening to Dub i dub now, it's a bit of fun in the vein of Doop. Kids of the time would have loved it. 🙂Not one I remember charting but you never know, I've never reviewed/added to database late 1995/96/early 97 before and my memory isnt what it was!

That Me & My song was entered to BJSC by Leww and did as well as 3rd! This was 8 years ago now though to be fair.

As for your own chart, great to see 'Fantasy' doing so well - my favourite Mariah song wub

It's 4 weeks on top for Fairground as Cast rocket up to 2 and out-peak Supergrass' Alright number 3, N'Trance take Stayin' Alive where The Bee Gees first took it - top 10, Intastella amazingly out-peaks the original Northern Soul classic The Night as done by Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons - it's not as great but it's pretty good - and De'Lacy's Hideaway also goes top 10, as dance stays strong. The highest new entry is an acoustic version of The Pretenders 1979 top 10 goodie, Kid. In at 12.

Big climbs for Dubstar, Paul Weller, Mary J. Blige, Tears For Fears, Celine Dion and Wet Wet Wet, before we get to some other new ones: it's a proper show-stopping Gangsta Rap classic as Coolio and LV revamp Stevie Wonder into a major timeless classic. It's from a dull film I watched on the flight to America, but the record is top notch in at 28. Meat Loaf debuts a single off his new album with a non-Jim Steinman song, though it the vibe is the same, courtesy of Diane Warren's I'd Lie To You (And That's The Truth), with added uncredited vocals from Patti Russo, new at 58.

Two places higher at 56, a 1994 Rave/House (I guess) track from O.T. Quartet pops in briefly, Hold That Sucka Down, which deserved better, I guess it was not getting airplay this time around as its a bop. Top 10 quality bop. The Cardigans enter with Sick And Tired at 71 a jolly-ish Scandi-pop ditty for thier first UK top 40 hit. Kwait naice. Suggs returns, seemingly still not needing the rest of Madness, on Camden Town - it's slightly more reggae than ska, but as affable as always. Finally Def Leppard drop a big ballad, When Love And Hate Collide, but I'll happily take their rockier tracks as rule of thumb over 12 years into charting.

It's a whopping climb to the top for Coolio and LV on a genuine 90's classic, Gangsta's Paradise keeping Cast at 2 yet again. There's an even bigger climb for Nick Cave and Kylie, as Where The Wild Roses Grow blooms at 6, and Pulp grab another top 10 with their double A side, and Morten Harket's Sam Cooke B side gets him a non-aha top 10 a decade on from Take On Me.

There's quite a number of new entries, headed by The Lighthouse Family debuting one of their most memorable songs, Ocean Drive - pleasant easy listening, but often hard to recall years later, at least for me. New at 36, ahead of the Finn brothers Suffer Never sounding not unlike Crowded House but not very much like their earlier band Split-Enz. Pity! At 40, just ahead of Lonnie Gordon returning as guest singer on Quartzlock's Love Eviction. No, I don't remember it either, but it's a 1995 remix of a House dancefloor track and it's not bad at all, and not at all PWL a la previous Lonnie hits.

Lisa Loeb is back, Do You Sleep, still doing her Nana Mouskouri spectacles impression, and the song is decent enough mid-90's Radio rock-pop ballad. Number 45 as Queen enter at 47 with the band version on Heaven For Everyone, it's not essential Queen but mildly pleasant and better than Brian May's solo stuff, more of an unexpected bonus than recovered gem. McAlmont & Butler follow up the epic Yes with the very low-key You Do, not quite in the same league at 50.

Geordie actor Jimmy Nail's side-shoot singing career hits an unlikely 10 years as Big River is new at 53, with shades of folk ballad about it, nice but washes over me a bit - Mark Knopfler lends a hand so that might be why. The Shamen are still going, with Transamazonia in at 60, another I've forgotten. There's something lacking about it, though it makes the right noises. Blues Traveler sound like a US chart hit I heard somewhere, as it doesn't ring a bell and doesnt fit into 1995 UK sounds that much. Yet. S'OK.

Oleta Adams Never Knew Love at 68, M People have another go at charting higher with a re-entry, Wild Colour and their Dreams seems to have a Perfecto Mix, so I'm assuming that's the version I like here, it's a dance cover of the Fleetwood Mac classic and The Corrs must have been paying attention. Boy George returns yet again, this time Jesus Loves You is long gone and he's having a go at jangly guitar violin-twiddling poprock. Plus side, his voice hadn't gone yet, downside, it's pretty uninspired. That leaves Elton Blessed - Elton's vocals had deepened a bit after his operation, but he can also still sing pleasantly in 1995. Shame the song is a tad dour, but way better than George's.

It's 2 weeks on top for Coolio and LV as a surprise threat emerges from Morten Harket's Sam Cooke cover, up to 2 and the highest placed track for any a-ha-related song since The Sun Always Shines On TV topped my charts in early 1986. Meanwhile, Nick Cave gets his biggest ever chart hit and Kylie makes the top 3 for the first time since Put Yourself In My Place hit at number one in 1994. Where The Wild Roses Grow is fab. PJ & Duncan get an unlikely top 10 for the first time, U Krazy Kats all forgotten these days as they rake in the cash from TV.

The highest new entry is bang in at 12 for The Lightning Seeds as they get into their stride on Lucky You, aiming to top the chart as Sense did in 1992, but not far behind at 15 it's Alanis Morissette with Hands In My Pocket as Jagged Little Pill is set to become a global monster classic album. In a bumper week for new music, Chumbawumba debut at 22 with the forgotten fun Ugly Houses, 2 years ahead of their massive world-wide hit, and they cheekily nick a bit of English Country Garden - the first time I've heard that tune since the 90's I think, as I type in November 2025. Once uipon a time it was famous.

At 32, Pauline Henry is still having minor hits, but drops the rock vibes for a sweet soul throbbing ballad, Sugar Free, and Everything But The Girl enter at 35, 11 years on from Each And Every One peaking at 2, and with their greatest record, the dance mix of Missing was huge, deservedly. A classic. At 44, Sleeper drop in with What Do I Do Now, a decent little Britrock ditty, while Bel Canto enter at 48 with the upbeat We've Got To Work It Out, more of a message track than dance, but with bits of operatic male vocals mixed into it. It's good. The answer to the refrain "when will we ever learn" is of course "Never".

At 56, Let Loose return with the catchy Everybody Say Everybody Do, a bit rockier than singles so far, and just ahead of Eternal insisting on bunging out more hits, this time Power Of A Woman, which is better than my memory of it suggested. The verse is pretty dull, but the intro was good (ie the chorus). 3 slots behind Cher does a pretty good version of Marc Cohn's Walking In Memphis, at 67, and at 68 it's 7 years and counting for Soul II Soul, I Care they sing, it's quite pleasant but not quite a Back To Life.

That leaves only a pedestrian cover of Like A Rolling Stone from...The Rolling Stones. I'll stick with Dylan thanks, and an unnecessary remix of My Prerogative, as remixing Bobby Brown had paid dividends recently - but this had already been a big hit not that long ago, so hey ho.

22nd October 1995

It's a 3rd week on top for Coolio and LV, leaving Morten Harket still stranded at 2 and Missing romping up to 6 as Everything But The Girl look like challengers - as do Let Loose, Everybody Say doing a lot better than I remembered at 8, even ahead of Alanis Morissette on her 2nd top 10 in a row, and Meatloaf grabs a second top 10 of 1995 too - I'd Lie To You And That's The Truth! He is though.

The highest new entry at 17 is the gorgeous theme to the TV epic People's Century, a truly ambitious project as it goes 5 years early to cover the 20th Century World events and culture using historical footage and interviews with ordinary people who lived through those times. It was a fascinating over-view of history using the people who were there, and it genuinely needs updating for the 1990's and repeating, not least because it's not always obvious what is important while events are still unfolding, so the end of the Century should be captured before we get too old. And the 21st Century starting to be compiled - granted it should in theory be easier with the internet and mobile phone/Youtube footage.

Wonderwall, future anthem and classic, enters at 26 - perhaps not as high as one might expect, but then it wasn't out on release yet - records tended to enter lower because you couldnt buy them until radio had had them 3 or 4 weeks! Anyway, Oasis reaching a new peak. Ace Of Base re-enter at a better slot, 31, with Lucky Love, as does Boy George's Same Thing In Reverse at 35, and Tina Turner drops her Bond theme at radio too, Goldeneye at 39 still sounds nicely dramatic.

Cliff is back for a 27th year with barely a year missed without charting (just 1975), though I don't remember Misunderstood Man. It's quite pleasant actually, not remotely commercial in terms of hooks, but well constructed as Cliff drops the synths and goes for a proper band ballad plus strings and piano here and there. At 48, Red Hot Chili Peppers enter with another I don't remember, My Friends, in depressed ballad mode and I'm not that fussed TBH, and the Quo cover The Searchers cover from 1964 When You Walk In The Room, a fab song, but obviously Status-fied here.

UB40 return, not having missed a year since 1980, Until My Dying Day a more subdued, less dub reggae than usual, it borders on mellow dance vibes and is lacking a hook, but it's decent enough at 66, with Enya also enetering at 72 on Anywhere Is, very Enya and very nice, but like The Bluetones' Bluetonic, for one-week only until radio play and release dates turn up.

29th October 1995

It's 4 weeks on top and no sign of shifting as Coolio sees of a sudden surprise ballad attempt from Def Leppard, their highest-charting track since Let's Get Rocked topped my chart in 1992 being When Love And Hate Collide. The People's Century theme also goes top 10, and the biggest new entry is yet another chart ballad at the top end - Madonna debuts You'll See at 12, one of her better ballads, but not a patch on the very under-appreciated (in the UK) Take A Bow, but it did plug her new compilation album of ballads, Something To Remember.

Cher, Tina Turner and UB40 leap into the top 20, and Saint Etienne drop by at 25 with the excellent He's On The Phone - if any 90's act under-performed chart-wise and were up for a trophy for that, Sarah & the boys are prime candidates for the top prize, and TLC follow-up a classic with a quite good Diggin' On You at 27. Remix fever of oldies shows no sign of abating as Blondie's Union City Blue returns 16 years on, and Human League's Don't You Want Me at 38 14 years later. Neither are as good as the originals.

Elton, Quartzlock and The Rolling Stones are now out to buy and re-appear higher up, at 47, 56 and 45, just ahead of the future number one song When You Say Nothing At All. Sadly it's not Alison Krauss' fabulous and tasteful ballad that did it, in at 50 just beside herself, it's that Ronan cover in a few years. Jimmy Somerville claims his 11th charting year meanwhile with By Your Side, one I need to remind myself of - and it's not what I expected. A low-key, flutey, plaintive ballad shuffle beat. Quite nice.

Diana King, meanwhile isnt after a Shy Guy now, cos there Ain't Nobody at 61 as she tarts up the classic Rufus/Chaka classic for the soul-jackswing shuffle beats of the 90's, which had already been a remixed hit already, and this cover doesnt add much, but it will be the first of several more. East 17 keep on thundering at 70, the low entry point disguising what is one of their best pop tunes, and slightly higher than a quick in/out for Dana Dawson's Got To Give Me Love at 74. Not bad, better than Diana King's cover.

Two concerts this week in 1995, the former with second Manfred Mann lead singer Mike D'Abo on vocals - later tours I saw had both Mike and Paul Jones to give a more full setlist with the right-sounding vocals.

The Sarstedt brothers all toured together singing and backing each other's hits as a sort of 3-fer-1 bargain. My rating of the songs is how they came over live that night, not how the records come over on recording, or else Mighty Quin, Fox On The Run would be in the Manfreds list, and Where Do You Got To would easily top the Sartsedts!

"You'll See" was huge # 1 in my chart. The previous chart topper by Madonna was "Dear Jessie" in the end of 1989 year.

The 'Missing' remix is fabulously atmospheric. Chart dance was getting more sensible now after the silly but fun Eurodance era.

'When Love And Hate Collide' does sound like a 90s boyband song but it is emotive.

You'll See is a good'un and I remember it topping your chart, but I love Dear Jessie even more 🥰!

Yes I think dance was more cool from here on too 👍and I had forgotten Def Leppard got so high in my charts as it's not one of my faves. Judging by the number of ballads at the top end I must have been going through a melancholy phase. If they suddenly all drop it'll be my mood picking up! I really can't remember what happens next 😯

It's not 100 % fact, but possibly Madonna had 13 number ones in my retrochart.

1983 - Burning Up

1984 - Lucky Star, Borderline, Like A Virgin

1985 - Material Girl, Crazy For You, Angel, Dress You Up

1989 - Like A Prayer, Dear Jessie

1995 - You'll See

1996 - Don't Cry For Me Argentina

2004 - Love Profusion

Madonna's on 21 number ones for me (Holiday, Papa Don't Preach, True Blue, Open Your Heart, La Isla Bonita, Who's That Girl, Express Yourself, Dear Jessie, Vogue, Rescue Me, Deeper And Deeper, Take A Bow, The Power Of Good-Bye, Beautiful Stranger, Don't Tell Me, Hung Up, Get Together, Jump, Four Minutes, Ghosttown, Medllin) but we share only 1, though Like A Prayer hit 2 and is bigger than some of her number ones! 😯😄

John, "True Blue" era was really successful in your chart and flop in my GD.

Only # 5 for "Open Your Heart", # 16 for "La Isla Bonita" and DNC for "Papa Don't Preach" (my least favourite Madonna's single from 80s decade)

13 number ones for Madonna, it's equal result with YVA and Britney, only ABBA had more chart toppers in "Gražios Dainos".

13 is pretty impressive! and ABBA out top in number ones is fabulous! 🤩
