Why would you start a chart at 4pm Friday when kids are still getting home from school? It kills off most of the audience! Then to have the cheek of putting it on CBBC and thinking that will raise the profile of chart music!! Yes everyone over 15 is going to suddenly tune into the CBBC channel! It will appeal to the young girls who like One Direction and the other boybands and the like, that's all.

The other thing that's not being discussed so far here is what will fill the slot currently occupied by the top 40 on a Sunday and compete against the Big Top 40 show, which will be faster and more comprehensive than the top 40 broadcast by Radio One.

I really think this is VERY bad move for the BBC and will make the charts less important in the British public's eye. As some of the people on this thread have stated they can't listen to the show or catch only a part of it.

We have gone backwards to the days of the top 20 and breakers. It's 2015 BBC!!! Not 1950!!!!

School finishes at 3pm, most people leave work by 4pm on Friday as it is POETS day.

@leethommo Errrrr, this on the Radio1 website.... 'Newsbeat will remain in its 5.45pm slot on Friday afternoons after the Chart Show has finished.'

Oh dear. Forgot about Newsbeat. So that leaves 1 hour 45 for the chart. They *could* still squeeze a few tracks in outside the top 20, but I wonder if they'll bother.

I think the CBBC link is really good actually, it's getting young people involved in the chart! Shocked there's been so much negativity towards it.

I think the negativity stems from aiming the show at kids in general. I agree, it's great to get kids interested but they have absolutely no idea how to appeal to the younger generations. Fearne and Reggie made their show kid friendly by discussing the items one's had stuck up their nose. I mean, really.

Not all schools finish then, mine for example finishes at 4

Yes, well it was a rough time. No doubt private schools finish later - but those children are less likely to be listening to Radio 1 rather BBC Radio 3 FM in their Chauffeur driven cars.
That would make even less sense since even the kids won't be around? #retarded

Presumably you consider the old Tuesday lunchtime chart reveal to be 'retarded' too as the kids were still in school, but that is what I grew up with. There was however another chart rundown on Tuesday evenings, 6-7pm, something like that. May have been a little longer.

Apparantely Greg James only gets 700,000 listeners on a Friday?? The 5 million is a weekly figure and if you listen every day you get counted by RAJAR as 5 listeners?? I'm surprised at this but it's someone who knows what he's talking about is telling me this.

And on the Wednesday morning breakfast show.

The charts were not being aimed at young people back then so my statement still stands.

Oh no, this is really bad for me, I usually get out of high school either at 3:05pm or 4pm, and the bus ride takes 25 to 35 minutes. I'll probably never be able to listen to the chart in full.

But on the plus side, we won't get your comments in the chart show thread. :D

I'd be intersted to know who exactly you think the charts were aimed at back then, given that they have always been first aired on Radio 1, a station very much aimed at young people.

What exactly happened in the change in 1987?

The chart was unveiled for the first time on a Sunday instead of waiting until the Tuesday.

One of the articles says CBBC are going to be involved with a replacement for Sunday afternoon. Which is a bit odd, unless this is all part of CBBC trying to reach out to mid-teens.

I don't know how I feel about this, CBBC link with chart show is good but for a whole slot I don't like. I mean its not just aimed at school kids you know I am just worried that will only drive other viewers away from the station. I think Maybe someone else should take up the slot like Maybe someone like Adele Roberts or Danny Howard but a normal show if that makes sense.

This report makes it look as if newer songs will get priority in the 40-21 section of the new chart show

Yay :cheer: this makes sense and we won't have to suffer the endless weekly playing of the likes of Sam Smith and Ed Sheeran :cheer:

I hope they make it some sort of official rule, something like only playing half of a song if it's been in the chart for 20 weeks or something

But on the plus side, we won't get your comments in the chart show thread. :D

That sounded a little harsh  but to be fair, I rarely visit those threads so I don't know what he posts

I thought so. And yet I've seen in a few places that they've said it has been revealed on Sundays for over 30 years, and somewhere else for 50 years.
