Kyra Machida - Blonde

“I'm not the type who fades quietly into the background.”

We are sticking with Marvel Rivals for now!

From The Luna Collective:

Ever since I dyed my hair blonde, I’ve become looser and more confident. When you’re confident, you don’t lose anything; you just say whatever’s on your mind. I’m such an Aries; I’ll say whatever immediately without thinking. So imagine being blonde, having bleach in your brain, and being an Aries—double homicide, but the best kind. When you’re confident, it comes out truthful.

First contest of 2026 and....... we've pretty much squandered our chances already by getting beat to our first entry and then getting vetoed. So we're sending our first Japanese artist since... 2016? Yeah I'm not liking the parallels. Anyway, enjoy a more PinkPantheress/Rebecca Black type bop. Cheers to another DNQ ❤️

Fine I’ll do some promo. But first-

Me that entire contest:

Probably the only good thing was that it managed to qualify. How it even did that I still don’t know.

However the song we originally confirmed made it to top 10 while we were in the trenches the entire contest period, and we ended up flopping. It’s not a good sign when you have a contest where the negatives outweigh the positives. As the first contest, this unfortunately sets the tone for the year, and honestly I’m worried.

Thankfully there were no hiccups with the next entry which means we get to swiftly move on to-

Magdalene - DJesus

“I'm not the type who fades quietly into the background.”

First off, this Madonna ass cover? LOVE.

Also we’re back to Adam Warlock. Honestly not mad.

From Hollywood Rewind:

 Quote

Mary Magdalene had Jesus Christ. Magdalene has “DJesus,” the song she produced alongside Slushpuppy and Dylan Harrison as the first single from her upcoming album.

But she’s no newcomer to the scene.

Magdalene previously toured as part of indie-rock bands Current Joys and Surf Curse before starting a solo project, Your Angel.

“Your Angel was a concept, and I wanted to be a person like Magdalene,” she says.

Encouraged by Slushpuppy, Magdalene reconnected with her teenage self and her roots in rock music.

The result is “DJesus.”

“It all ended up being a commentary on America and celebrity and Christian nationalism and where our country is at right now,” Magdalene says.

After all, rock music has rarely been silent.

“The fact that people are treating our president as a second coming of Christ — and there are AI pictures of f***ing Jesus with his hands on Trump's shoulders — truly, it is religious psychosis,” Magdalene says.

Religion for her isn’t just political, it’s personal.

Magdalene, who comes from a family of conservative Christians in Santa Fe, New Mexico, wants to use her art to push cultural conversations forward.

“I always say women are Jesus of the world,” Magdalene says. “Put them on this pedestal and worship them, and the second they fall from grace, crucify them.”

Society wants women to be sexy and entertaining, she says, but not too slutty — there has to be purity as well.

To Magdalene, that paradox defines womanhood.

“I think it's why religion has been used a lot by women in pop music as a metaphor, because that story very easily ties into the experience of a woman in America,” Magdalene says.

She points to artists like Lady Gaga and Madonna. In her 2016 Billboard Woman of the Year speech, Madonna put it this way: “You’re allowed to be pretty, and cute and sexy, but don’t act too smart. Don’t have an opinion; don’t have an opinion that is out of line with the status quo, at least.”

It is the Lenten season and we have decided to celebrate it by emulating our sisters in crime POPHub and pissing off every conservative Christian nationalist in the process. This is pretty much a Gaga track, with mainly comparisons to “Disease”. It’s not the first time we’ve used religious imagery and it certainly won’t be the last, but this may be our most blatant. Say your prayers.

And to the haters and pearl clutchers, stay gagged because my DJesus loves all.

Will taking BJSC to church be what we need to bounce back from a disastrous January? Stay tuned.

Well a lot more positives this time around! For starters, an actual hit! This proves that the previous contest was more or less a false start.

Very interesting how much a larger pool of voters can change things - this got more points than the likes of Serpentsmile, Cemetery Date and The Great Magician yet performed worse position-wise!

Mrrrr!

Finally playing as the freest of free… Jeff the Shark.

From an interview with Daily Guardian PH:

 Quote

“As I worked on new songs, I started to feel it would be a better representation if I separated them into two,” the Heartbreak Generation singer-songwriter reveals. “With Ore, I wanted this record to have an edge—a rough texture in its feel—while still sharing the soft and delicate feeling of rOe. Ore is kind of like a bigger sister to rOe: more direct and opinionated, rougher and grittier in appearance, and not afraid to speak her mind.”

Conceptually, Ore traces ena’s passage into adulthood, confronting emotions she once avoided and approaching them with greater clarity and resolve. The EP reflects on independence, uncertainty, and the process of defining oneself outside inherent expectations. In shaping chaos into form, the acclaimed indie pop star found herself quietly repairing—healing to an extent.

As a Filipina-Japanese straddling cultures, ena locates Ore within a deeply personal geography. Cultural identity remains central to the record, so intact and specific, it cuts through the fiber of every track in the EP.

“As I listen back to the record, I realize that it captures a very Asian experience,” ena recounts. “Growing up in an Asian household, surrounded by its values, taboos, societal pressures, and hidden passions, has shaped the way I perceive the world. Navigating my twenties between two cultures—sometimes similar, sometimes polar opposites, braided together.” The EP carries the ambient imprints of her life as is: rainstorms, rice cooker chimes, arcade noise, hot wind against a truck horn.

We’re crazy… but we’re free.

Heading back to Asian artists again, but this time we’re doing it for the culture. Manila Killa may be the first Filipino to do it for us as a member of CHROMEBODIES, but she’s doing it solo. Philippines by way of Japan. Nice. If you liked Jessica Winter, you’ll probably like this one too.

Will we cheat death or will we end up 6 feet underground? Should be interesting.

It's not mid, but it certainly was overhyped 🤷

But still, one point for the culture, and hopefully the Philippines continues to produce more up and coming underground pop stars like her.

Sarah Nimmo - I Still Miss You

“Whoa… Gimme a sec to absorb all'a this…”

Rogue is ready to deal some damage! Fitting for the country who does best when they're other people.

From an article on UFO Network:

 Quote

Written in the aftermath of a shattering breakup, ‘I Still Miss You’ is a monument to loss, love and resilience. A fixture of London’s queer scene and best known as the frontwoman of influential electropop band NIMMO, Sarah began releasing music under her own name last year following a period of self-discovery and reflection, supported by the community around her. Her solo work places her voice front and centre, drawing on a deep affection for the seismic legacy of British pop.

‘I Still Miss You’ is the fourth single from Sarah’s solo project, which debuted to a sold-out crowd in London’s East End last February. Rooted in club culture yet driven by emotional truth, the track channels the energy of the dancefloor while making space for vulnerability. A synth-soaked power ballad, it balances euphoric electronics with devastating honesty.

Co-produced with long-term collaborator Joseph Ashworth, the song explores the feeling of missing someone before their absence has fully settled. Written during a period of personal transition, it examines longing and unresolved emotion with clarity and restraint, anchored by expressive vocals and emotionally charged yet measured production.

Chaos reigns again in the land of the wolves as we've yet again had to rely on a replacement entry after getting beat to a previous song. So this time we're dancing with tears in our eyes and drinking our sorrows away with another synthpop song a la Dancing On My Own/Trustfall from the frontwoman of NIMMO. Yes, that NIMMO.

We are swaying to the tune of a DNQ this edition, so come dance with us.

Well I wasn’t expecting this!!!

Honestly still kinda surprised that it went the way it did. I thought having to scramble to confirm something else would be a death sentence and that this wasn’t really competitive, but man did y’all prove us wrong!

Next Up: sights seem set on a pop song so we’ll have to see if we’ll have to rely on a plan B again and fear for our lives but it is gonna be unapologetically pop 😅

Adored this choice. It did take a couple of listens but once I was in I was hooked!
