Wow didn't expect to see Rick Astley here, I just love his stuff "Never Gonna Give You Up" is one of my all time faves and still love it to this day, I remember buying his first album, many years ago and loved it. "Whenever You Need Somebody" (his sound alike follow up, but who cares still a great track, just brilliant), "Together Forever" (probably my 2nd fave from him, again love it), even his cover of "When I Fall In Love" was very decent, okay it's not my kind of thing, but still his voice sounds astounding on it. "My Arms Keep Missing You" a great track and US single "It Would Take A Strong, Strong Man" was just pure fun.

Robbie Williams = He's a great artist, but never appealed to me to be honest.

Wow thought Take That and Robbie were going to be higher

38 (61) MARIAH CAREY (2,436,000) 1994 2.7565

Though Carey’s career is now 25 years old she’s never been bigger than she was in 1994 when she scored her only solo chart topper with her cover of Bad Fingers’ “Without You” and of course she released that hearty perennial “All I Want For Christmas Is You”. She also had her best selling album on her hands with “Music Box” which moved 890,000 copies in that year alone and in the singles she played second fiddle only to Wet, Wet, Wet during the year.

37 (78) BLONDIE (2,257,000) 1980 2.7639

Rivalling Agnetha Faltskog as the nation’s favourite blonde of 1980 Debbie Harry (and the lads) had a great year which saw the group score a hat trick of No 1 hits. “Call Me” topped the charts on both sides of the Atlantic and was a lucky break for the group who got the gig for writing the theme to “American Gigolo” after Stevie Nicks turned down Giorgio Moroder’s request to do the job. Their cover of “The Tide Is High” gave them their final No 1 for 19 years but when the album “Autoamerican” only made No 3 it hinted that the glory days were over.

36 (26) EMINEM (3,157,000) 2000 BEST SELLING ACT 2.7671

Breaking through in 1999 with “My Name Is” Eminem’s reputation for being able to shock was further exemplified by his return to the charts in 2000 with “The Real Slim Shady” which took pot shots at other popstars including Fred Durst and Christina Aguilera. Proving that any publicity is good publicity the single became his first No 1 and was followed before the end of the year with his (in some people’s eyes) best track “Stan” which introduced us all to (the uncredited) Dido. He also scored his first of seven UK No 1 albums, a run which continues to this day.

So she's not even in the Top 200?

She's not exactly a massive seller is she? Girlfriend and Complicated are her only big hits I can think of.

Yes it does. Her best years commercially were 2002-04 here, in 2002 she fell just short of a million combined, in 2003 a fraction over a million, and in 2004 750,000 approx. In conclusion she was always well short of the 1.5 million per calendar year that's required to make the list. :D

Mariah's placing is extremely impressive given that some people mistakenly write her off as a non factor in the UK!

35 (88) PAUL YOUNG (2,212,000) 1983 2.7776

From the novelty hit “Toast” with the group Streetband in 1978 it took Young a further 5 years of being in the pop wilderness before fame knocked on his door by which time he was already 27. His cover of Marvin Gaye’s “Wherever I Lay My Hat (That’s My Home)” gave him his only No 1 in July 83 and helped see his poster on many a teenage girl’s wall during the year, further covers of “Love Of The Common People” and “Come Back And Stay” also made the top 10 whilst “No Parlez” (his debut album) sold well over 800,000 copies but it was a year he never managed to top.

The granddaddy of all charity records the Band Aid inception is the stuff of legend now, Bob Geldof haranguing popstars into participating on the track, the phenomenal sales, a cool 2.1 million in just 4 weeks to come from nowhere to become the best selling single of the year, the decade, and for a while, EVER! It’s also the only entry on this list from an act who sold 0 albums to make up their total. Sadly Helping Haiti won’t be here......

A true pop icon up next, Bowie had been going since the 60s and throughout the 70s providing hit after hit and a whole array of images that kept him in the public eye and the newspapers before the 80s came around. His triumphing of the new romantic movement in his “Ashes To Ashes” video helped break many groups onto the UK charts and in 1983 he himself had his most successful year with the Nile Rogers helmed “Let’s Dance” album and the title track which made No 1 on both sides of the Atlantic.

BEST SELLING YEAR: 1999

The biggest boyband on our survey and the biggest Irish act, Boyzone finally emerged from the shadow of Take That when “No Matter What” became their first million seller something which (to that point) even the Manchester boyband couldn’t match. They scored 2 No 1 singles during the year plus a third No 1 album which eventually turned out to be their biggest selling studio album “Where We Belong”.

BEST SELLING YEAR: 1996

Like Enrique Iglesias it was Dion’s move from making records in European languages to making them in English that marked her transformation to a UK star, of course she first came to prominence as a Eurovision Winner in 1988 but it all started when her manager (and future husband) René Angélil mortgaged his house to fund her first album. In 1990 she released her first material in English and the US hits started though the UK didn’t give her a top 10 hit until 1992 and though she sold more in 1996 it was 1998 when she got the biggest market share thanks to THAT song from Titanic which contributed to her 3 million units sold during that year.
