It enabled her to become the only act in the 90s to score a hat-trick of No 1’s

She certainly wasn't the only artist to manage 3 #1 hits in the 1990s - do you mean 'only female solo artist'?

86 (40) KINGS OF LEON (2,806,000) 2009 2.1388

http://www.drfunkenberry.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/Kings.jpg

Regarded as more an albums act pre 2008 Kings Of Leon emerged from critical lauding to mass commercial appeal with “Sex On Fire” which became not only their first top 10 hit but also a No 1 single. Though a September 2008 release it remained charted throughout much of 2009 and was covered on X Factor causing a surge pack into the top 10 that September, the album “Only By The Night” also sold over a million for a second year on the trot evidencing the emergence of the band into a major stadium filling act.

In 1985 Tears For Fears managed to conquer the US, they had two American No 1 singles in the year “Shout” and “Everybody Wants To Rule The World”, both of which went top 5 here for the band. Their second album “Songs From The Big Chair” was named after the book and TV show “Sybil” and helped them shift almost a million albums in the year too.

Peddling scandipop long before it was fashionable, Norwegian trio A-Ha had to release “Take On Me” three times to get a hit with the UK only cottoning on once it was a hit in the US. Come 1986 and the ball really stating rolling with a No 1 (“The Sun Always Shines On Tv”) followed by 4 top 10 singles and two successful albums throughout the year and of course a string of state of the art (for their time) pop promo’s.

I couldn't help but wonder if Celine Dion is in this list.. :???:
I thought James Blunt was a contender for the top 10 having sold more of an album in a calender year than anyone else until

Adele's 21.

If the albums market wasn't booming all round in 2005, he probably would have been.

83. (73) ALL SAINTS (2,291,000) 1998 2.1827

They may have been outpaced by B*Witched on the singles front (in part thanks to “Never Ever”’s sales being split over two years) but All Saints were the better performers overall for the honour of the second biggest girl group in the land in 98. Indeed it was “Never Ever” which thrust the girls into the stratosphere and ensured that follow up’s “Lady Marmalade/ Under The Bridge” and “Bootie Call” also made the top whilst the debut album drifted over the million mark. Even at their height the press were full of stories of the girls falling out and at one point even a second album seemed beyond them, but they returned in 2000 to give the public what it wanted before they temporarily folded.

A bit of clever marketing here, the group Miami Sound Machine started out using that title and scored some moderate success here with “Dr Beat” back in 1984 which morphed into Gloria Estefan & The Miami Sound Machine and in 1989 into Gloria Estefan though they were essentially the same thing. “Anything for you” became the first No 1 album of 1989 for the outfit which was followed by the 6 week chart topper “Cuts Both Ways” which saw Estefan sell almost 2 million in the year.

BEST SELLING YEAR: 1982

So here’s a bit of a shocker- who expected these higher? In all fairness part of Duran Duran’s problem (though not really a problem) is that their releases during 1983-86 were so sporadic as to not generate high yearly totals as they spent most of those years touring the planet and promoting meaning that their studio work rate was quite slow. Before Duran mania exploded worldwide (and especially in the US) the group had a great 1983 scoring their first UK No 1 single and album with “Is There Something I Should Know” and “Seven & The Ragged Tiger” plus continued sales from a massive selling album in “Rio” which resulted in the 80s icons best year, though as you’ll note not their biggest selling year.

80 (32) KATY PERRY (3,050,000) 2010 2.2032

http://www.starandstyle.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Katy-Perry-American-Music-Awards-2010.jpg

She’s come a long way from her beginnings in Christian Rock, and whilst “One Of The Boys” provided her breakthrough with hits “I Kissed A Girl” and “Hot N Cold” it was Perry’s second album that lands her here. She lifted three top 3 hits from “Teenage Dream” including a No 1 “California Gurls” as well as features on hits by 3OH!3 and Timbaland all combining to make her seem omnipresent. A further five singles were plucked from the album (which itself was repackaged as “The Complete Confection”) which permitted the singer to have five US No 1 hits, the most from one album since Michael Jackson’s “Bad” in 1988.

Another act who were in the top 10 long before they made it in their own right, they were of course co-writers/producers of DJ Jazzie Jeff & Fresh Prince’s “Summertime” back in 1991, and made it big in some parts of Europe in 1994 with their brand of “humour”. Come 1995 and they married some rather sexually explicit lyrics to dance tracks and scored themselves a couple of No 1 hits, but it was brief, their 1998 effort “Pass The Toilet Paper” summed up where it all went wrong.

Everyone’s favourite UK 80s version of the Jacksons- Want matching outfits? In- sync dancing with shiny gloves? Can’t afford a Michael Jackson concert in 1987? Well these lot were the next best thing before they converted part of their mansion into a recording studio and had a string of expensive cars in a show of 80s excess, then they went down the dumper and filed for bankruptcy, yet 1986 proved a golden year for them, a million selling album “Silk & Steel” and 4 top 7 singles including their biggest hit “Rain Or Shine”.

All Saints were the Sugababes of their era and Girls Aloud the Spice Girls type band!

Yep - there's several parallels in the analogy.
