My theory is that if they committed to building lots more houses, it would be a tacit admission that the population is rising too fast, just like building more prisons would be an admission that they cannot control crime...

Isn't the population expected to surpass Germany's?

This is what happens in a successful country which has the only official world language as its native language. You either address the reality, or you fail in your duty of care as government.

But are gov'ts elected to let in as many people as possible, in order to 'demonstrate their duty of care' to as many people as possible?

They are welcome to control the borders more. They just haven't, as immigration is a benefit to the country.

If having lots of people is so good, then why is it people tend to flee from overpopulated countries?

Wow. That is the biggest pile of bullshit I have ever read on this site.

People “flee” war torn countries where they are at danger of being killed. People “flee” countries where they fear the government may kill them for opposing them or holding a different belief. No one is “fleeing” because of overpopulation.

More people are living in single person households, driving up the need for more houses. We additionally have had a very strong economy and, thanks to some dodgy number flattering zero hour contracts, are approaching full employment. So we have to import labour in order to continue to grow. We suffer skills shortages in vital areas, such as in the NHS, that mean we turn to immigration to help us fill those gaps. This is the sign of a successful country and is something to be proud of.

Somehow I doubt that. ;)

So any correlation between country size & number of refugees leaving is pure coincidence then.

There's nothing that can be done about that.

1. Yes. Pure coincidence. Google list of population of countries and see how many have a refugee exodus problem.

2. That doesnt mean it's not a fact of life and more houses aren't needed. The REAL reason there are no houses being built, as I have explained before, is due to 1) people buying multiple properties because you make more money than in banks and the stock market 2) Banks are still in hock from the banking crisis and they rely on house values not dropping. More new houses = house prices drop = negative equity for borrowers who overstretched = banks get f***ed = taxpayers have to bail them out again 3) builders maximise profits by keeping supplies low. Back in the day there were shitloads of building companies building shitloads of houses and houses were affordable, now there's a few giants which swallowed up all the small players and have total control over house numbers 4) Councils are forced to sell Council stock at half price at cost to the taxpayer which keeps the rental sector making dosh out of the taxpayer instead of Councils having the cash to reinvest. 5) Numbers of skilled builders is a huge problem. It was no co-incidence Polish skilled people came over to do the work when houses WERE being built as there weren't enough British skilled workers. That situation has become worse as former builders now work in other areas or have left the country to work elsewhere.

As I said, political choices that can be changed. The last few governments have all announced housing targets and all have failed miserably because they piss about with cosmetic non-solutions to try and look as though they can shrug their shoulders, "not me mate, I tried". They havent tried.

Oh, YES, just like the Chinese, Indian, US coasts, Japanese exoduses. Oh, wait, that never happened.

I'm gonna predict a 46% (nearly 50%!!) win for Labour in the next election.

No matter how bad the Tories are I just can't see Labour ever wining an overall majority with Corbyn as leader. Maybe a hung parliament

In terms of immigration from the Indian subcontinent to the UK, I suggest you are in error.

He got nearly the same vote share, and vote number, as 1st term Blair, soo

... yes?

Should opinion polls not be published during election campaigns?

The theory is that doing so can affect the eventual result through 'bandwagon' effects - but what are your views on the issue?

Personally, I'm happy with the status quo.

Apart from over Xmas, there hasn't been a gap between polls this long for 3 years.
Not so much people choosing either party as desirable, just less undesirable than the alternative equally useless option.

Too true! :P

It's says 5th/6th March so there may be a delay between Labour Jewdas decline and Tory flag-waving advance, I guess? Or is that a "from" date? Not sure....

That said, Boris may have killed the Tory advance, so it will be interesting to see anyway :)

Two more new polls today - neither showing any real change in voting intention, though there is a noticeable change in leadership perception.
