As an example of Tories being treated leniently by the press, how many front page stories have their been about Jeremy Hunt's purchase of seven flats in Southampton? You know, the ones he bought but then forgot to register either with Companies House (they were bought via a company) or with the Commons authorities. Of course, it's easily done. Who can honestly say they have never forgotten a multimillion pound investment?

I would describe the Liberals of the 19th & early 20th C 'Progressive' only in relative terms - it took the rise of the Labour party to really light a fire under them.

It's probably harder for a party like the 19th century liberals to be as radical as the Labour Party of the 20th century because the liberals originated from a mix of Chartists, Whigs and Libertarians so had many other interests to find concensus with which is why a party of the working people/trade unions was set up seperately at the end of the 19th century.

If it wasn't on the front pages, where did the story break?

Can't be arsed to check, but I'd guess The Guardian, the Independent, the Mirror or the local Southampton Echo.

Not likely any right-wing rags who believe rich people should buy up all property to stop poorer people having the opportunity to own their own property - keep 'em poor and uneducated and malleable.

You could always google for yourself and do some minimal work and research in your busy life.....?

Now you're sounding like Queef of Peace.

Hey!

I wasn't disputing the story, but as you no doubt guessed, it wouldn't have featured strongly in my chosen sources. ;)

As it happens the DM did cover it, although I didn't realise the significance at the time : http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-56...pton-flats.html

So it was downplayed. I only skimmed the DM article form your link, but I didn't spot a mention of the fact that his "oversight" could land him with a two-year prison sentence. If it had been a Labour MP, there can be no doubt that it would have been splashed over the front pages with the BBC probably following up by featuring it prominently. Perhaps you missed the significance precisely because the headline made no mention of the possibility that he had committed a crime.

On a side issue, why do newspapers always list the maximum possible sentence for any given crime, when those are virtually *never* handed out in reality?

Because it’s easier to find out the maximum sentence than the average sentence.

Or because it makes better headlines?

I don't think that YouGov poll relates to the poll that Harve quoted - that looks like a different YouGov poll on the same topic, I can't see the quoted numbers in it (I'm guessing it's a more up-to-date poll that has been released to the media but hasn't been put on YouGov's website yet). It's an interesting opinion poll nonetheless.

You would have o be extremely delusional o believe any poll after last time when to media wanted d us to believe they were on course for a record 300 seat majority looool.

Labour got 53% of the vote at the locals. The locals. It's done. Hillary style fake Michigan polls to a bandwagon effect are not gonna help save the landed gentry now. Oops.

It's funny you should mention the term 'extremely delusional'... :teresa:

quick summary:

People think May is slightly less crap than Corbyn, just the same as the General Election.

People think the handling of Brexit is slightly less crap from the Tories than Labour.

Corbyn thinks the Single Market is a no-no despite his supporters not agreeing, on the basis that his policies can't be carried through from within the Single market. I'd love to see exactly which policies these are that his delusions believe he will be able to carry through when he doesn't get elected by not listening to his core supporters....
