Case in point, Tori Amos, known as a singer-songwriter goddess who has produced many wonderful, emotional piano-filled tunes gets her biggest hit from a dub of "Professional Widow" remixed by Armand Van Helden which was huge in Ibiza:

 

 

Case in point: earned her a shock #1 in 1997.

I'm sure there's a lot that I know of but nothing's coming to mind at the moment, although I imagine a lot would be vocalists with different production such as a dance-y production which isn't usually their style, or a vocalist who's usually in dance production and switches to another genre or vice versa ^_^

I suppose the most obvious one here is Plan B. Everything pre and post 'She Said' and 'The Defamation of Strickland Banks' album are so far removed from his usual 'grime' repertoire.

On the same tack as those tracks re-mixed and issued in their danced-up guise for single release, Freddie Mercury's 1993 No 1 'Living On My Own'. Okay, Mercury had more-than-flirted with electronic production and dance music affectation during his earlier solo years, and lest we forget was no stranger to No 1s as a member of Queen. But the posthumous re-mix of this track in a very studio-based Europop early '90s style stood out as being wildly distinct from any of his previous releases (even those issued after his death) and was by-far his biggest solo single in the UK.

 

Another one off the top of the head is Maroon 5's 2011 monster-hit 'Moves Like Jagger' - a massive departure from their soft-rock guitar-based sound that originally broke them and yielded several radio and sales-friendly hit singles in 2004, subsituting it with swathes of over-produced studio effects with barely no acoustic instruments in evidence at all. Result = not quite a No 1 but still a million-seller. And needless to say they've never looked back. Why would they now they know where the real money's at....

Somebody mentioned Freddie Mercury, how about Queen. Nothing else in their repertoire (or anyone else's really) sounds like Bohemian Rhapsody.

 

Ellie Goulding really fits this thread for me. 'Burn' and 'Love Me Like You Do' sound nothing like anything on 'Lights' or 'Halycon Days'. They're a lot more radio friendly/public accessible than the likes of 'Starry Eyed'/'Guns & Horses'/'Anything Could Happen'/'Figure 8' etc...

That was the immediate song that came to mind for me as well. It was that remix that got to number one, so definitely counts.

 

Agreed with Jonjo on Burn and LMLYD for Ellie Goulding. Really not a representative of what her albums sound like at all (I love both albums so that is not meant in a bad way).

"Do It Like A Dude" has the same energy "Bang Bang" has imo

Extreme and Mr. Big both did this within a few months of each other in 1991-92, two metal groups releasing a gentle acoustic ballad (More Than Words/To Be With You) and getting their biggest hit by miles.
