Another lie then. Whenever it was first celebrated, it certainly wasn't 2.020 years ago.

Great one!

Johnson on easier territory though as he could attack Sir Keir due to his change in tack on COVID restrictions

I find it a little rich that Johnson of all people is calling out Starmer for doing a U-turn. That was a fair performance from Starmer, best one I've caught so far, Johnson looked incredibly blustery.

Speaking of which, Tories in unsurprising support of child malnutrition as they reject Marcus Rashford's call for free school meals to be extended over the winter holidays, guess there's no way they can make sure one of their friends ends up with millions by doing it so...

In the meantime, Cummings is back in the news, albeit not as prominently as the story deserves. Remember his jaunt to Durham? It was reported at the time (again, not very prominently) that there was no record of Cummings and his father (co-owners of the main property) getting planning permission for the cottage. It has now been confirmed that no planning permission exists but that the property can stay because of how long it has been there.

But there's more. It has also become apparent that the amount of Council Tax Cummings and his father have paid on the cottage is precisely zero whereas they should have paid a total of around £30,000. That debt is being written off for no apparent reason. I'm sure all the people jailed for failing to pay much smaller sums in Council Tax will be thrilled.

Discussion on how ghastly the Tories are seems to have drifted into the Labour thread but here's some more in this thread

The Tory MP for Workington has defended his opposition to ensuring children have enough to eat on the grounds that some of the recipients ("a tiny minority" even in his own words) sold or traded the food parcels for drugs. I assume he will agree that MPs should no longer be paid on the grounds that a tiny minority have spent their salaries on prostitutes or illegal drugs.

Meanwhile, the Tory MP for North Devon has insisted that the businesses that have stepped in to provide lunches in half-term (even though many of them are struggling to stay afloat) should get no further assistance from the Treasury.

Theresa May made her name when she told the Tory conference that many people saw them as "the nasty party". If only we could return to the days when they were compassionate enough merely to be thought of as "nasty".

Honestly, I couldn't believe what the MP for North Devon said, talk about just not getting it.

On a different note there are quite a few Tory MPs who have come out now and asked the Government to change their minds. So I wonder if the whip might change or a few Tories might break party lines again? I just don't think this topic is going away and the Party are scoring tons of own goals here.

I just don't get it, they can spin it any way they want (or make horrible generalisations like Ben Bradley has), but they can't dress it up - they are essentially denying poor children food. It's just utterly disgraceful, an awful PR move and so easy to solve given how much they've U-turned in the last year.

I'm glad it's not being brushed under the rug despite their efforts and people are continuing to pressure them about it.

Maybe they don’t have to care anymore as they’ve brainwashed to British people who ALWAYS vote them in to be as nasty as them. I feel there’s no collective spirit left in the country!

I disagree, I think the outrage just shows how much collective spirit there is. Lots of people vote Tory, not because they're nasty people (of course some nasty people vote Tory) but especially since 2015 is they have appealed far more to the Centre-Right. The majority of these voters obviously want life to be better for themselves, but most of them recognise while they might not be earning £80k each per year, they know there are people far worse off than they are. The problem is there are so many people in their own little bubbles outside of the cities that believe the myths and conspiracy theories that parents will use the vouchers to buy heroin and fags.

The thing with the Brexit Party, and Farage in general, is something that's often said from those and the type of person arguing for Brexit is about saying that we should spend money on our own people rather than sending it abroad in aid, to the EU and spending it on benefits for foreigners living here. As bad as their arguments frequently are, I do think they're often telling the truth when they say that and that this is something they would support public money being used for, and as such I don't find it surprising that Farage and now the party (are they still linked?) have now come out against the tories in this.

I do agree with a lot of this, but I also think they're seeing it as a way to eat in to the vote of people who voted Tory for Brexit. Come early Q1 next year the Brexit Party will be telling us this wasn't the Brexit that was promised and the Tories steal food from kids. There are a millions of voters out there that will soon turn their backs on the Tories.

There’s no way the BP would have voted to spend money on free school meals during holidays it goes against the free market mantra and would totally split the party imo

Lee Cain has rsigned from his role as an Aide to Boris Johnson. Seems he was due to be appointed as Boris' Chief of Staff but the Party esentially rebelled against it and has ended in Lee Cain resigning. Now Cummings is threataning to leave (he won't).

I’m sure it’s just a coincidence that this happened on the day that the UK’s death toll from Covid officially passed 50,000.
