I think it could have, my point of view, discuss.

What could have happened is the tally of sales could have still run until midnight Saturday as before, benefiting from two days of new release sales, and then the chart will be fresher than it was before.

At the moment, although the BT40 is unofficial and irrelevant, but as regards the fresher chart goes it is the one, Today Little mix will spend the second week at Number 1 on the BT40 chart, only the first on the Official chart, as of Friday.

What would have happened is last Sunday Little mix would have claimed the first week at number 1, being as fresh as the BT40 chart, also today the BT40 will have a high entry from John Newman, we will have to wait 5 more days for the same entry from John Newman to be in the Official Chart final week tally(although John will be in on the Update tomorrow)

So the week will be as follows

Friday morning - new releases out

Saturday night at midnight - Sales tally closes for the week.

Sunday 4 to 7 - Chart as normal.

Wednesday Afternoon - update as usual

Just my thoughts on the matter, I may be wrong or barking up the wrong tree.

Then record labels would change their release date back to Sunday to get a full week of sales to have a better chance of #1.

Surely labels wouldn't want to do that as it means all pre-orders/early sales are used up for a lesser chart position with just those 2 days.

Edit: That's in response to the OP, not to look like I'm disagreeing with Dobbo :P

It would have been better and more interesting but that is not what the record companies care about. They need held back releases and a full week of sale to flaunt no.1s to make themselves look good. They need complete control of the results.
The new release strategy seems to be alright as other countries release their music Fridays, but they could have left the chart show till Sunday, I still can't get to grips with all the changing days for the weekly topics, which reminds me I have to drop the F.C.P. thread topic later this afternoon/early evening at some point.

Still a bit of a joke in a way, Little mix was in with Marvin & Kat on Sunday and told they were Number 1, and again with Greg 5 days later on Friday and told they were Number 1, funny state of affairs.
I think they made the right decision considering the introduction of the global release day.
I think the global release day is ok, but would be much better if every song was released everywhere on the same day, ie instead of the UK still waiting up to 3 months for releases

Not really. Two different charts innit.

I'm happy enough with the change and prefer it to companies releasing big singles on Friday and only having two days of sales worth before the Sunday Chart is revealed but I do wish that the current Friday format would be tweaked just a little. To me starting the chart at 3:30 would be much more ideal and would give them enough time to play the new entries. I don't even think it's a matter of cutting into Scott Mills show, before when the midweek chart update was on a Wednesday his show lost half an hour so I can't see the harm it would cause. I just think for bad or for good it's not fair that a song enters the top 40 in the charts and doesn't get played so that's the only change I'd like to make.
I like the global release day if they would actually follow it in the uk and stop being so controlling. If a group is popular enough/releases a good enough song it will rise or fall in the chart! Radio should get on board quicker and move with the times.

I remember in the days of Hit40UK they used to have occasions where the same artist was being interviewed simultaneously on both shows about being number 1 as one or other of the shows would play a pre-recorded interview as if it were live!

Release date was broken this week by Bring Me The Horizon with the Happy Song! It was issued on a Monday. So that's that rule quickly ejected.

There's another chart that still uses the old week system and is more accurate as it removes any fiddling that's going off. This week's chart is featured below... As you can see the result of the Friday date is to make records come in low. I haven't included the last week's positions, but Little Mix where 21, Years 1, Avicii 32, Sam Feldt 41. Both Sam and Little Mix had downloads removed due to a certain fiddle that iTunes is pulling on the public this week. The chart is sales only - no streams.
