Hi Riser

Such a big fan of 679, loved the original the most but did get used to the new version eventually, it's just 100% jam material from start to finish. I like My Way too but this is his best for me

Sledgehammer was a lovely track to get them more established, had a really polished sound to it and it was catchy too - then they unleashed the pop monster that is Worth It, so much fun and shows off their star power in the video too. Agree with you it is weird they just left it at that? :/

679 a good vibe to that but I dare say he'll ever come close to topping Trap Queen for me. The album was a bit all too samey also.

Sledgehammer is definitely my favourite of FH's hits - really is a perfect pop song.

My House the song I wasn't big on, nor was I the EP - Here It Is probably the only song I revisit.

I don't know how you write so much for each Jordan, but the effort and passion is second to none!

Love Carly Rae & Demi so far! Excited for the rest :D

Thanks Adam! I really don't know how either because I'm the exact opposite when trying to write anything else

I guess this is the reason he was removed from the song. http://www.hotnewhiphop.com/fetty-wap-expl...news.18126.html

I love them two Fifth Harmony songs as well.

Thanks Lewis! That article says he was born in 1989, now that's three different years he was born :drama:

Hi Josh! Yeah it's definitely a complete jam no matter what version. And you're right, 5H were great in the "Worth It" video. I figured they'd push "Sledgehammer" in the UK afterwards and another song in the US, how very bizarre.

I've previewed Fetty's album and it does sound pretty samey. I'm not sold on him as an artist yet except for this song and a couple others.

"Sledgehammer" is my favorite so far too! Even though I called it faceless, it's really just formulaic and that's no bad thing!

Haven't listened to "Here It Is" but I'll keep it in mind. Thanks Dobbo!

Fifth Harmony that is all oops
I'm sure there's more you will like so keep checking back! :D

FIFTH HARMONY

Hailee Steinfeld "Love Myself"

Love_Myself_by_Hailee_Steinfeld.png

Believe it or not it’s been 5 years since Hailee starred in True Grit and got her first Oscar nomination. I actually had never watched her acting until this year when I saw her in Pitch Perfect 2. I wasn’t too impressed but that was probably a result of the movie not being as good as the first. But now we know she can sing, and suddenly she’s started to launch her music career. I was surprised at the hype for "Love Myself" before its release, although half of it was coming from Ryan. For some reason I was expecting it to be country, or else something very unremarkable, but instead heard a stunning pop anthem and was blown away!

Sadly, "Love Myself" didn’t become the definitive smash it had potential to be. Sometimes I swear American radio just collectively gives up on a song even when it’s selling decently, and in this case it vanished before the UK or Australia could take notice and give it some redemption. I’m not confident yet that Hailee will be getting an album out (Becky G had a bigger hit last year and still hasn’t released hers!) but it’s best to remain optimistic if this is any indication of how good it could sound. While I try to save some commentary on this for later, I will also definitely make an effort to listen to her EP!

Worth It, Sledgehammer, Love Myself

Adore all 3: Worth It is a jam, Sledgehammer is beautiful and Love Myself is of course one of the best pop tracks of the year

I'm In Love With A Monster shade :( Absolutely adore that song

Also I'd definitely recommend to listen to the Hailee EP ASAP!! Especially Hell No's and Headphones, such an amazing EP

Imagine Dragons "Roots"

Imagine Dragons "Shots"

Imagine_Dragons_-_Roots.png Imagine_Dragons_-_Shots.png

Imagine Dragons had such a strong debut, one of very few current bands that can score a handful of chart hits from one album without being overly pop like Maroon 5. It wasn’t likely they’d be able to follow that up just as successfully, but as long as the music was okay I’d be satisfied. Well, it was more than okay! "Roots" comes from the recent rerelease of Smoke + Mirrors and takes their sound in a hip-hop direction. While the verses aren’t so great, everything comes together in the chorus, with a strong hook that fits the surrounding layers of rhythm very nicely.

Going in reverse chronological order here, "Shots" was the previous single over the summer and one of the band’s catchiest yet to my ears. An upbeat song like this was certainly welcomed although the lyrics were very much in contrast to it. It was the perfect choice for second single in my opinion, but in the UK they opted for "Warriors", a soundtrack song and inferior "Radioactive" soundalike. And even here the airplay for "Shots" seemed to be split between the original album version and the Broiler remix, which to be fair is brilliant! Neither one could keep their run of hits going, but the lack of overplay means it’s still sounding fantastic.

Carly  I love your commentary for her too!

This has reminded me that I need to listen to Ellie King  will get on that soon! Love this concept once more (and looking forward to the trickier letters at the end of the alphabet :heehee:)

Hi Jordan

Roots was nice actually and I agree with you the chorus is massive but it did tire on me quickly. Shots is the real highlight of this section for me, definitely one for the summer and so catchy like you say. Not a clue what they were snorting when they released Warriors as a single ??? - BORING.

Carly  I love your commentary for her too!

Floppy Ball -_-

Yass at Elle King though. I don't know about you but I can see Ex's & Oh's going top 100 in the new year once Christmas songs are gone :D not been too huge on ID's material this year, 'Warriors' was decent I suppose and Carly SLAY *.*

Jason Derulo "Cheyenne"

Jason_Derulo_Cheyenne.jpg

I’m sure I said it in last year’s thread, and maybe even the year before that, so I’ll say it again: did anyone think Jason Derulo would still be a significant popstar this many years after his debut? Even with the occasional shameless hit/guilty pleasure like "Talk Dirty" and "Wiggle", it’s still impressive. He’s even been a less divisive artist on Buzzjack as of late, which is most understandable when I listen to "Cheyenne" and mostly hear the 80s-esque pop-funk vibes of "Style" by Taylor Swift, down to the similar guitar/synth combination. It’s a style (pardon me) of pop that I’m not overly fond of, but both songs grew on me anyway, and the similarities made this seem like a good single choice.

The question of what went wrong here is very baffling, because it underperformed in all the major countries. Especially the UK, where "Want To Want Me" was a four-week #1 and this missed the top 100 entirely!?!? I was hoping for Jason to perform it on X Factor, but the impact date had been left so late anyway that he must have given up on it by then. Hopefully things turn around with the next single so Jason’s surprising longevity can continue for another year.

I've only heard Cheyenne once and it totally passed me by, forgot it instantly after oops :drama: YAY for Ryan Hailee appearing, shocked that never took off more!

Hi Jordan

I was a fan of Cheyenne but it was disappointing following WTWM so not surprised it wasn't a massive hit. Plus it didn't get much/any promotion so what can you expect :/ Was a nice pop song but uninteresting and lacked the same spark his major #1s have.

Kelly Clarkson "Heartbeat Song"

Kelly Clarkson "Invincible"

Kelly_Clarkson_-_Heartbeat_Song_(Official_Single_Cover).pngKelly_Clarkson_-_Invincible_(Official_Single_Cover).png

It's hard to acknowledge "Heartbeat Song", and Piece By Piece as a whole, without admitting that it wasn't up to Kelly's usual standard. For an artist capable of incredible pop music, hearing Kelly sing such basic lyrics on her lead single was a major disappointment. There was not much personality to be found, and for as much as I anticipated her new music it was sadly underwhelming, losing what little spark it had after a few listens. Its chart run in the UK was enjoyable though, debuting at #7 and the number of places it dropped each week were 3-3-3-2-5-2-5-3-2-5. I also enjoyed the similarities to "The Middle" by Jimmy Eat World, and normally I'm not so kind about songs that sound like other songs but in this case it was the only thing that stood out in a positive way.

I didn't think much of "Invincible" at first either, especially for a song with Sia's writing credit on it. Based just on that it seemed like the obvious second single choice, when I would've preferred "Take You High" or maybe "Run Run Run". It has gradually grown on me however and sounded great on the radio for the one or two times I managed to hear it there. Overall I think the album deserves a little more attention than it's getting, but it is a bit like Kelly on autopilot so I'm not surprised by its lack of impact.

Kid Ink feat. Usher & Tinashe "Body Language"

KidInkBodyLanguage.jpg

Up to this point, Kid Ink has been almost solely associated with DJ Mustard and Chris Brown, as the songs he's best known for were produced by the former and featured the latter. At the risk of seeming like a one-trick pony, what a pleasant surprise that "Body Language" has become his best song, without relying on either Mustard or Chris! First he upgrades to production from Cashmere Cat and Stargate, and the result is some definite ear candy, slinky but upbeat and, best of all, unique!

A track like this calls for a more gifted singer than Chris Brown, so Kid Ink upgrades to not one, but two superior vocalists in Usher and Tinashe. Tinashe's contribution is pretty limited but Usher carries it all very nicely, a real return to form for him as of late. It's a shame Kid Ink went immediately back to Chris for his following single (full collab album coming soon I'm sure), but at least we know he is capable of greater things.

Kells Clarkson - yeah this era wasn't the best era at all but it was good

Kid Ink ft Tinashe and Usher was really good as Body Language is my fave Kid Ink song :cheer:
