crying right now

Just listened to the album. When I looked at the producers and heard all the claims about experimentation, I thought it'd be a really eclectic album that would move drastically away from 21, but it really still keeps her core sound and only nudges towards the directions she may go in going forward. She has a broad audience so it was smart not to alienate them, but not to completely pander to them either.

And I actually really love "Remedy"! I know it's more of a classic Adele ballad and sonically it could fit on 21, but lyrically it's so tender and heartfelt and couldn't be farther from the bitterness of a lot of the 21 tracks. Or maybe I just have a weakness for people singing about their kids (see also: Beyoncé's "Blue").

Having listened to 'Remedy' only a couple of times, the only impression it's given me is 'generic overly sentimental ballad' in terms of its structure, melody and lyrics (albeit a beautifully performed one). It's interesting you see it as being more of a classic Adele ballad because I actually thought of it as beneath her, sounding more akin to the token slow/last song on a standard commercial pop album. I also presumed it was about her partner rather than her son, which makes me feel a bit heartless lol.

*listens again and tries to like it*

Album is estimated to have sold 1.9 million copies in its first two days on sale in the US. It's going to end up selling 3 million+ first week alone in the US and may just beat Candle In The Wind's record of 3.5 million copies sold in a single week. Just absolutely amazing.

By "classic Adele ballad", I just meant that it's a traditional-sounding Adele song and it could've been on either of her previous two albums, at least compared to the more eclectic songs on 25. And idk, I'm not really claiming to have a particularly good "objective" reason for why I love it, as it's not a standout in her discography by any means (it's basically a rewrite of "Make You Feel My Love"). I just find the sentiment behind it really lovely, and I think that age and experience (of being a mother especially) have afforded a weight to her words. Like, even though it's basically "Make You Feel My Love" 2.0, I can't imagine 19-year-old Adele singing it in any believable way. Like I said, I think I just have a weakness for people singing about their kids :P

And yeah, she said in an interview that it was originally written for her son, but when she sang it she was really singing it to everyone she loves, so you're not wrong!

I think Remedy sounds like it could belong on 21 given it was the first track written for the first album and obviously would be before she started experimenting per say with other sounds.
remedy is gorgeous but river lea and i miss you steal the album for me; they're so florence it makes me weep

There are clips floating around of what appears to be a video for 'Water Under The Bridge' (with Adele miming along so it's legit!) but it doesn't seem to be clear whether it was filmed specifically for a Target commercial or is indeed the official video. It'd be an excellent choice for the next single anyway. <3

I don't know how but I hadn't actually made the 'Remedy'/'Make You Feel My Love' connection , at least consciously, but you're completely right - the lyrics are near identical in parts, which would go towards explaining why they feel particularly clichéd to me!

And thanks for elaborating on all that, by the way! I just found your point interesting and, as it happens, the song has slightly grown on me since listening again :magic:. Also, I completely understand the appeal of songs written as tributes to artists' offspring too, a big favourite being Kelis' 'Acapella'!

Do you have a link? I'm sure it was confirmed When We Were Young was the next single and I'm sure that's shown in her performing it on SNL and the special BBC episode too!

I saw one on Youtube this morning but it's since been taken down and all I can find now are screenshots of it (when you search for most recent results of the song), so sorry about that. And yeah, you're probably right about 'When We Were Young'. I do think 'Water Under The Bridge' would be the next best option/the strongest contender for third single though.

EDIT: Here's one (I'd imagine it was filmed for the commercial)
