Yeah, definitely "High And Low". There's a certain kick to it that the others don't have.

High and Low reminds me of when Inna and Alexandra Stan were relevant

Aicha>>Make You Mine>>High and Low

Aicha obviously I go for because of the funky house element in it and the disco strings nearer the end :) I also find it the most catchy. Even if the video is pretty bad (reminds me of the awful style of mid 00s dance videos when she is dancing around wearing very little clothes)

Make You Mine is very good too though, but I don't think it will stand out enough though for the contest.

I don't really like High and Low in general, it is a bit too generic, and I don't really like the uber-cool vocal style but I do like the Mariachi style trumpets in it.

Radio Killer's "Feelings" did pretty well in WorldVision and the two eastern European dance tracks Dobbo put out were smashes, so I think the demand for that sound is still there.

Speaking of eastern European dance tracks, has anyone sent Burak Yeter ft Danelle Sandoval - Tuesday to BJSC before (I doubt that would be eligible now though as there would have been too much blog coverage etc. because of its popularity)?

Yeah N-Lazone did in BJSC 89!

How did it do :o
21 .: 188 :. N-Lazone // Burak Yeter - Tuesday (feat. Danelle Sandoval) [sF1: 04 // 090]

so not too badly, scraped hit status :D

(You were in this contest too! :P)

You were in that contest Snake, and you clearly can't be that big a fan of it since you didn't vote for it... :kink:

Oops. My dance music tastes have clearly changed a bit and become wider since then tbh. :)

Inna is still somewhat relevant (not really, but her latest song Say It With Your Body is very good and on trend)

Inna is still relevant as our regular dance forum contributor Inna Selez's username was named possibly after her. :P

50 Contests: A Review - The Revival
after 50 contests, Danaelanda looks back on its participation

We started doing this back when we had passed fifty contests, but never got around to completing it. Inspired by Terra Avium, we'll be revisiting 50 Contests: A Review. Firstly we look back on the entries I had previously covered using my commentary from earlier in this thread.

2011-12

BJSC
: Danny Dove & Ben Preston feat. Susie Ledge "Falling" [25]

Where else to start then but BJSC 35, the first contest Danaelanda participated in. It was a summer's day in 2011 when we checked the Buzzjack Song Contest forum and noticed that registration had finally been re-opened (I recall it was closed for some time as they didn't want a load of new people in, and this was back when we'd have less than 50 in a contest - how times have changed.

Our original source of entries would have been Radio 1's dance anthems, perhaps this could be seen as cheap but there were and still are plenty of songs that are played on the show that are obscure enough to go in the contest - and some that were quite well known but still got into the contest anyway (cough, Animals and Tsunami). We had an entry planned for the contest, the wonderful '
' by Clokx but unfortunately for us we discovered that the song had already been sent, and it got wasted on a Buzzjackfestivalen contest where it flopped too. -_-

So it was instead the turn of Danny Dove, Ben Preston and Susie Ledge to represent Danaelanda in their first contest with the song 'Falling', also from Radio 1's Friday night dance anthems show. The song itself isn't all that great, and would go on to become one of our least-regarded entries by ourselves very shortly. Some countries do get it right on their first go but the majority don't, and Danaelanda were no exception. 'Falling' would even only make #42 in the country's official chart (my personal chart) - to date a record low for a main contest entry of ours (some spin-offs have missed the top 50 entirely).

That didn't stop it from qualifying though, in fact it would finish 5th in the semi giving us a good first impression - but it was a case of us just being in the right semi as we would end up finishing 25th in the final - back when the final only had 28 songs in it (giving a more authentic Eurovision-type experience than BJSC today, but that's not necessarily a good thing especially with the number of entries we have now).

BJSC
: Elena "Disco Romancing" [20]

So after a bit of an underperformance in BJSC 35, we'd find a new niche for the country: Romanian dancepop not too dissimilar from the likes of Alexandra Stan. We would send Elena and her effort 'Disco Romancing' into this contest with the hopes of providing our country with a better finish. In reality though, the song failed to make the final. We were gutted. How could people not like a fun Eurodance smash?

Well as it turned out a fair few people did, as Elena would come back in The Rejects final and smash the competition... well most of it anyway. It finished 2nd, which convinced us to return to the BuzzJack Song Contest the following contest and we have never left since. Indeed we took a break of four contests after this, as I was very much losing interest in the contest since DNQing with a song we thought was a lot better than our previous entry. Looking back it's not a major favourite of mine but I do quite enjoy it. It is a bit of its time though, I do remember when songs like these seemed to be a big dance trend but now you don't get any of them.

~

BJSC
: Radio Killer "Don't Let The Music End" [16]

So we were back after a little break and what better to send than a dance banger with female vocals right? Well clearly this didn't leave much of an impression as it would unfortunately DNQ, missing out by just one position and four points. That would be frustrating for any country in this contest and it was a big disappointment for us to return with a DNQ. The song, 'Don't Let The Music End' by Radio Killer, would end up doing semi-well in the year's rejects final to make up for it. It was a bit of a generic dance entry, as Danaelanda would become known for sending, but it is a bit of a fun song with a decent vocal.

~

BJSC
: Antillas feat. Fiora "Damaged" [18]

No lie, this could have been the contest where we finally won. We had discovered Emma Hewitt 'Colours' on the Armada Music channel prior to the contest and had intended to send it... until Hitstastic posted saying he was going to send it but had been beaten to it, before we had even confirmed (so obviously I didn't attempt to confirm it and send Antillas instead - more on that later). Eventually we'd find out that Botanikka got to it first and they would go on to win the contest. There were no hard feelings though, we'd give it 12 points.

Antillas would represent us instead then with 'Damaged' featuring Fiora (who would appear on many trance songs at the time). It would be our first trance entry but unfortunately the change in direction wouldn't work for us - we would DNQ yet again, finishing 18th in the semi-final (which was bottom 5, semis were smaller back then). A fun fact: 'Damaged' is a cover of a former UK top 20 hit from Plummet, so some of you may be familiar with it already. We didn't actually know this when we sent it so that had no impact on our decision, I just think it's a great song. A small controversy would appear with this song many contests later when someone tried to confirm the Plummet version but got vetoed because it's basically the same song as this.

~

BJSC
: Christina Walls "Carry Me To Paradise" [15]

Back to generic dance with female vocals; for Danaelanda this contest then, we sent the beautiful Christina Walls (she was apparently on Miss Universe Canada so that explains something) with 'Carry Me To Paradise', which would become my personal favourite to date - though of course I've sent lots of songs that outdo this since. Annoyingly this would give us another DNQ when it really shouldn't have. Because for whatever reason at the time only the top 14 would go through when there was an autoqualifier, leaving 29 songs in the final rather than 31 - and Christina Walls would finish... 15th. :| To this day I don't feel justice has been served from Ms Walls but I can't really care much now when Danaelanda has gone on to much greater things since.

~

BJSC
: Airsoul "Asia" [18]

So following from our last DNQ we decided to wing it with an instrumental trance song (Airsoul's 'Asia'). Of course that also flopped too, finishing in 18th in the semi-final with the same amount of points as another unjustified DNQ - Parachute Youth's 'Can't Get Better Than This' repping Terra Avium. This contest was not particularly memorable so the commentary will be short, and I didn't even truly love the song I had sent (it missed the top 20 of my personal chart). It was notable for being our first instrumental entry though and it wasn't our last either.

~

BJSC
: Laurentiu Duta feat. Andreea Banica "Shining Heart" [18]

For this contest we would return to Romanian dance and this time it would work in our favour, with the country getting its first top 20 hit (18th). The song was one of our favourite BJSC entries of the time too with it topping the Danaelandan singles chart for one week. We were so in love with the vocals of Andreea Banica (the female in the song, I admit I was confused at the time as to who was who as they don't have common English names) that we'd send her again three contests later but not to any success. To say we were pleased that we finally qualified again after a whole year of either DNQing or not partaking would be an understatement, it felt great to finally have some sort of hit under our belt.

~

BJSC
: Oana Tache "Take Control" [17]

Danaelanda were back to continue their path of success found with our then-current niche of Romanian dancepop, sending singer Oana Tache to the contest. It didn't quite work out for us though as we finished in 17th in the semi-final and would be the start of yet another long run of DNQs. We truly were the Flynnonda of our day. Except not quite as unfortunate (:kink:). Using the power of hindsight though this wasn't that great of an entry and it's one that Danaelanda tend to shove to the back end of our history books and own entry rankings. It certainly is a lot different to the sound of Danaelanda today. Annoyingly our former flop entrants Radio Killer were entered here and actually qualified this time, they should've qualified when *we* sent them

~

BJSC
: Adrian Lux feat. Dante "Burning" [19]

Danaelanda went on to send Adrian Lux which turned out to be another massive misfire as we finished 19th in the semi. It's one of our least favourite entries now and looking back it very much doesn't sound like a hit. Let's just pretend this didn't happen and quickly get on to reviewing our good contests.

~

BJSC
: Andreea Banica "Could U" [24]

After what we thought was a huge failure of an entry in 'Burning', we turned back to Andreea Banica who saw us have success a few contests back with 'Shining Heart'. Sadly 'Could U' couldn't quite repeat that top 20 finish, and in fact missed the semi-final top 20 even, placing at just 24th of 26 with 29 points. A record low for us at the time, though it's been "overtaken" multiple times since, most recently with Tobtok's 'Aber' which finished in 30th in the semi. 'Could U' was a very generic dance-pop entry and sounded similar to our previous entries, which was probably why it failed so much. At least we learnt from this to never send Romanian dancepop again.

~

BJSC
: Netsky "Love Has Gone" [17]

We thought we'd take a different direction for the next contest, after DNQing three times in a row we must have been doing something wrong with sending that sort of dance. But it seemed the public didn't want drum n' bass either, as not even Netsky could get us back in that BJSC final. At least it did better than my previous two entries but I must say I was disappointed. It's one of his best songs, very energetic with a strong hook, but that couldn't stop the Danaelanda racism we had become convinced was happening. The love had indeed gone, or so we thought.

~

BJSC
: EDX "Touched" [24]

Finally we ended up getting a qualifier for the final contest of the year, saving us from matching our record of five DNQs in a row. Though it was actually a big surprise that we ended up qualifying as it had been initially announced otherwise before the host realised there was an error in his spreadsheet. For a progressive house instrumental track I'd say it was a success, and was also one of my favourite entries of the year and arguably the real beginning of the next direction Danaelanda were to go in. It's nearly 7 minutes but it builds so well so have a listen dance fans.

I didn't know you were after 'Colors' as well :o

I did discovered and wanted to send in BJSC 41 but went with Ria Ritchie instead, and iirc Rich convinced me to send 'Colors' in BJSC42!!

This is all interesting to me...I didn't know that both you and Batidas wanted 'Colours'...actually I had it as potential for BJSC 41 along with Ria Ritchie, which I ended sending first Ria and then Emma in 42 :D

Which contest were you considering sending Gregory's Theme to?

#090 :basil:

but seriously I wasn't considering it in the early days of my BJSC career as by then it had been and gone from my chart and I wanted to be as up to date as possible.
