How does it hold up today?

Yet another big name I managed to send in 2013 of Steve Aoki. The song was big in the EDM scene but I correctly figured it'd bypass the veto as it wasn't a chart hit though incorrectly thought it'd manage to be another finalist. The song for me is still one of the peak tracks of the Big Room era of EDM with a ridiculously infectious drop - the magic of this couldn't be recreated now though as this style very quickly got over-done. It also always has to be this version instead of the Kid Ink vocal mix they made to try and get it into the charts, he ruins it.

Stil no others I've recognised from the off - giving the Steve Aoki one a listen now, sounding quite nice although I totally get what you mean about the sound ending up being overdone, I remember hearing this sort of music for the first time in the early 00s, it really was a moment.

How does it hold up today?

It is fairly generic by standards of trance but does its job well for sure with a lovely vocal and big melodic drop perhaps influenced by the progressive house of the time. However it's not a huge fave now from my catalogue when I've sent a few better trance songs over the years.

How does it hold up today?

A fairly pleasant and lovely song but definitely not one of my finest moments in the contest particularly given how badly it performed and not a song I often revisit. It's the closest thing to RnB we ever sent and that's a genre that rarely does well so not sure what we were thinking here anyway.

How does it hold up today?

Perhaps the best song we ever did send, well it was certainly the most commercially successful of our entries having gone to UK #1 about 3 months after we sent it. However it was unjustly a bit of a contest flop only making 26th! Oliver Heldens has been a national treasure of Danæviia ever since with a long career going just as strong today and it was with this groundbreaking record it all started bringing future house into the mainstream. Although the Becky Hill vocal mix probably gets more time from me now, it works just as well as an instrumental club track with its irresistible groove.

Another bit of progressive house here, sadly not a remix that ever got much real world traction or even an official release and Nexity themselves didn't last for very long but the track does just what it needs to do. A beautiful trance song here, one of the few of the genre that went all the way to win and one that very much deserved to do so.

Fire Breather was one of my early Danaeviia (or Danaelanda as you were known then) favourites actually, I can't recall how much I gave it, but I ended up coming back to it a lot, along with Flume's Insane <3 Although my favourite discoveries from you are still to come (they'll probably be obvious x).

 

I admire the effort you're going to here! I'll make sure to stay tuned.

BJSC 138: Avicii (feat. Daniel Adams-Ray) - Somewhere In Stockholm

 

 

Commemorating the 100th anniversary of Danaelanda/Danæviia we bring back for the second and final time Avicii. Taken from his second album 'Stories' from 2015 the track 'Somewhere In Stockholm' is one of his most personal tracks with lyrics about growing up in the Swedish capital, and missing where he used to live having since moved to L.A. for his career. Given we previously showcased what remains Avicii's biggest missed single opportunity in 'Dear Boy' back in 2016 we are now using the opportunity to go for something a bit different to his biggest hits, a side of Tim those who aren't fans may be less familiar with - more songwriting-driven than festival/club friendly. It also features some great string arrangement which further elevates it above the other album tracks he has made.

 

Vocals are provided by Adams-Ray who was Kenyan-born but later moved to Sweden. He was previously sent to BJSC under the alias HUMAN with the song 'Higher'. Aptly for the 100th he is also the first Daniel to represent us.

One of the best house tunes of the last decade and one I was glad to have been able to sent prior to it getting Radio 1 playlisting and a UK top 100 peak. With an irresistible groove and for once an actually inspired sampling of Robin S' 'Show Me Love' which otherwise did get done to death.

How does it hold up today?

Another brilliant song here, that looking at that chart run I clearly didn't give enough love to back in its day with it tailing rather quickly. This is a song that definitely deserved better than to DNQ although sending foreign language songs is always a risk and one that's cost me a Q a few times. It's even more baffling in hindsight given it later became a big European hit and currently sits on 240m Spotify streams! Tez Cadey didn't produce a whole lot else of note but this has held up very well and perhaps would have performed better had I sent it a few contests later as it did end up reaching 10th in 2014's Rejects contest.

How does it hold up today?

This is one of my 2014 entries I'm not quite as fond of now in comparison. It is good for what it is but festival progressive house doesn't excite me much anymore and this is by no means a classic of the genre, so a track I'm not so bothered about it having DNQed although it was unlucky to have missed out before the rule change to include more qualifiers which would have qualified the song (before it inevitably finishing bottom 5 probably).

How does it hold up today?

One of my more obscure finds, and a song that since got taken down from Spotify. Once it gets going with the deep house drop it is very good but it's by no means a Danæviia classic either, we've done better entries of this genre. How does it hold up today?

Well it was 2014 so no surprise that we opted for another deep house track here but it was one that didn't fare any better than the previous one very nearly coming dead last in the final. We at least got bragging rights of having sent Lucas & Steve before they ended up being one of Spinnin Records' biggest names for whatever that is worth. It does its job well anyhow, certainly an improvement on the original version which I wasn't aware of before but it had been a UK top 20 hit in its time. Again though not one of our absolute best efforts, I can see why it didn't perform too well.

How does it hold up today?

An absolutely excellent piano house track, a very uplifting track lyrically and with the piano stabs timed perfectly to keep it driving. With the sadly anonymous vocalist really going for it turning what was originally an instrumental club track into something that could and should have been a big chart smash. We can settle for it having been my biggest BJSC hit up to this point even though it definitely deserved top 10.

How does it hold up today?

 

 

A great deep house track to start the year of 2015 off, it has a lush vibe to it from the acoustic guitar and vocal which would sound better on a tropical island than so called tropical house really. The harmonisation in the middle of the track is a nice touch as well.

My 2nd future house entry following 'Gecko' and it turned out to be the bigger hit here giving me at last a first top 10 finish. The drop this had sounded insane at the time while this style of EDM was still very new and today it holds up as a standout of the day and a track Pep & Rash never bested.
