Shawn Mendes the third artist of Portuguese descent (after Nelly Furtado and Katy Perry) to be #1 in the UK.

Rui Da Silva's classic "Touch Me" hit #1 in 2001 and he was fully Portuguese.

Sean Paul is also of Portuguese descent as well.

not only his first uk#1 but his first EVER uk#1!!!!!

Rui Da Silva?

I didn't count Rui da Silva precisely for that, but I guess he must be included as well.

I didn't know about Sean Paul, but technically he doesn't have any UK #1s as the lead artist, only as a feature anyway.

Stitches is so so bland, really not a very good start to the 2016 number 1s. Hopefully Fast Car can displace it soon.

Katy Perry of portuguese descent? never heard!!

How can you be so sure that of every single artist who's ever had a UK #1, that none of the others are of partial Portugese descent?!

My thoughts:

First of all - great to see a genuine CLIMBER get to #1. Proving that OA/OS works well in the UK when there is a level playing field. I personally find the current setup of tracks debuting low and climbing far more interesting to watch than 1 new entry in the Top 10 each week.

Great to see "Stitches" get to #1 and 99 Souls top 5!

Glad to see X Ambassadors making the top 40 and Zara Larson too - even if it is at the expensive of "All I Ask". And Craig David up to #12  I really hope he has a chance of going top 10 in the next couple weeks - he's performing the song on Jonathon Ross soon so fingers crossed that'll give him the boost needed!

Katy Perry of portuguese descent? never heard!!

Yes on her mother's side (Perry is her mother's maiden name, she used it instead of her father's surname Hudson).

A big part of the US American of surname Perry descend from Portuguese immigrants in the USA that changed their names from Pereira. Steve Perry and Joe Perry are also of Portuguese descent.

This has actually surprised me as well!

Matthew Perry from Friends & Linda Perry from 4 Non Blondes too, I'm presuming.

Stitches sold 68,125 copies (30,517 of which were derived from streams).

1582 ahead of Justin Bieber. Not that close in the end really...

Matthew Perry from Friends & Linda Perry from 4 Non Blondes too, I'm presuming.

Linda Perry is of Brazilian and Portuguese descent. Don't know about Matthew.

Oh, Glenn Medeiros and Bobbie Gentry are also of Portuguese descent and had UK #1's as well.

What Do You Mean is still #4. This is getting beyond ridiculous now!

All I Ask finished at #41 :(

Edited January 22, 201610 yr by burbe

but I think for instance Nelly Furtado both her parents are Portuguese immigrants, born in Portugal and then moved to Canada... that's not the same as Katy Perry having 1/64 in her blood from Portugal cos some great-great-great-grandfather emigrated to the US in the 18th century :D

I hope Ethan is okay.

i haven't spontaneously combusted... yet! xxx

but don't worry jonas blue is on his way in a fast car to take out those shawn mendes stitches from the top of the chart :P :kink:

Worst new #1 of a year I can ever remember  hopefully won't last long.

I for one am still enjoying the Bieber domination. All 3 are brilliant songs so I have no reason not to! (Especially when the likes of Snakeships are queuing up behind :puke2:)

Really want Craig David to go top 10, just that little extra iTunes boost needed I'd say would do the trick.

An mixed batch of new entries this week. Haven't heard The Sound but heard good things about it. Army is decent but not among her best. Renegades is awful, they're a band that I just do not get. As for Lush Life, I did love it but it's practically ancient now so completely over it.

My thoughts:

First of all - great to see a genuine CLIMBER get to #1. Proving that OA/OS works well in the UK when there is a level playing field. I personally find the current setup of tracks debuting low and climbing far more interesting to watch than 1 new entry in the Top 10 each week.

It is slow at the moment, but once everything syncs we should see things speed up.

Now all we need is MoS to have all their future releases flop embarrassingly and them to come to the dark side and release their tracks for sale as soon as possible!

I of course share these sentiments.

All I Ask peaking at 41 shows how low sales on iTunes are now.
